Starz’s new period drama Magic City, set at a Miami Beach hotel in 1959, will premiere on Friday, April 6, the network announced at TCA today. It stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan as the hotel’s owner.
Meanwhile, sibling Encore will air the four-part BBC miniseries The Crimson Petal And The White, an adaptation of Michel Faber’s bestselling novel. It will make its U.S. debut March 6. The psychological thriller set in the underbelly of Victorian-era London stars Romola Garai (Atonement) and Chris O’Dowd (Bridesmaids), with Gillian Anderson (The X-Files), Shirley Henderson (Harry Potter) and Richard E. Grant (Withnail and I).

How many failures does Starz need before they stop putting originals on friday nights? They need to stop being so afraid of Sundays. I get that there is competition on Sundays, but you can’t keep running from that. Look at how many cable nets have had success on Sundays.
I for one enjoy some good original programming on Friday night instead of having to pick between a dozen different series that sound interesting on Sunday nights. Besides, Starz may not have had much success with Boss and Camelot but Spartacus has been a huge hit for them, in terms of cable, on Friday nights.
GILIAN ANDERSON. Phenomenal in the BBC’s Great Expectations over Christmas, coming soon to BBC America. Looking forward to this.
Watched The Crimson Petal on BBC this spring. Incredible miniseries.
