CW Picks Up 3 More Drama Pilots, Including J.J. Abrams & Mark Schwahn’s ‘Shelter’
EXCLUSIVE: One of the highest-profile young lead roles this pilot season has gone to Stephen Amell. In a potential star-making turn, Amell has been cast in the title role of the CW drama pilot Arrow. In the Warner Bros TV-produced project, described as a modern retelling of the story of DC Comics character Green Arrow, he will play the vigilante superhero who fights crime using archery, martial arts and technology under his secret identity as Oliver Queen, a wealthy playboy and billionaire industrialist-turned-outspoken politician in Star City. David Nutter is directing the pilot, written/executive produced by Andrew Kreisberg, Greg Berlanti and Marc
Guggenheim. Amell is a familiar face at the CW, where he has done arcs on The Vampire Diaries and 90210. He most recently recurred on HBO’s Hung and ABC’s Private Practice and was one of the finalists to replace Andy Whitfield as the lead on Spartacus. Amell is the second actor to portray the Green Arrow on the CW; Justin Hartley played the character on the Smallville for several seasons. Like Nina Dobrev, the breakout star of the CW’s Vampire Diaries, Amell hails from Canada. He is repped by SMS, Leverage and Canada’s Gary Goddard Agency.

He’s not as crappy as I thought it would be, but at least he’s eyecandy.
Justin Hartley was fantastic as Green Arrow.
We can hope this guy will do even half as good.
If this guy is half as good as Justin Harley then this show is doomed.
Justin Harley can’t act to save his life.
Where is he now anyway? I bet he’s getting dumped in another soap opera he auditioned in.
Amell is a gem of an actor and this has been a long time coming for him. Even if this thing goes sideways it will NOT be because of him.
Justin Harley is also eyecandy, albeit a bad actor himself.
They all are.
And LOL at people who say this character’s got big shoes to fill. Justin Harley is TV actor at best who can’t get a decent movie role.
That says a lot about his acting abilities.
… and Arrow is a TV show, not a movie. Are you lost? Are you posting drunk? Is English not your native language? Do you even know what you are trying to say?
I’d still prefer Justin Hartley.
Me too. This guy’s got some big shoes (make that boots) to fill.
I think this is a great choice for the role. I know many will be upset, but I wonder if half of them even thought that Justin Hartley probably didn’t want the role to begin with. He probably wants to move onto something bigger and be known for something new.
Stephen is a GREAT choice and I am sure he will shine in this pilot. Can’t wait to see it.
Just call the show “Green Arrow”, for Allah’s sake.
Well, he was popular enough on smallville (the character that is) to stay on for four or five seasons, so makes sense they now want to give the character it’s own series (even if it’s a different canon than smallville universe).
I’d still prefer Chris Santos.
The show will suck but the guy is hot so ill prob watch if its picked up.
YES!
He’s no Hartley.
Justin Harley is that you?
I propose you work on your own career and actually get cast on ANYTHING instead of posting on message boards.
Well they’ve got an actor that at least looks the part so they’re off to a good start. Overall the premise sounds solid and while Hartley was a great addition to Smallville the idea of carrying forward that continuity is ridiculous. The quality of Smallville is not something that should be mirrored and I’m hoping ‘Arrow’ is step up.
Mirroring the quality of GREEN LANTERN is infinitely worse. It’s farcical. The smart money was in a Smallville spin-off and failing that at least go with a team not responsible for the epic fail of GREEN LANTERN.
The despised writers of Green Lantern being given the keys to another DC property. It’s ridiculous. What a death wish that company has.
I couldn’t agree more, JJ
They should have called that Wonder Woman pilot “Woman”. Bet it would have gotten picked up then.
It’s from the writers of Green Lantern bomb. This is the kind of stupidity you have to expect from them.
In keeping with the tradition of “Arrow”, “Ringer” and “Nikita”, the CW is announcing its rebranding as “W”.
Great for Stephen. Project is a whole host of mediocrity though.
horrible choice he’s a terrible actor
Stephen is fantastic so if this project holds up it’s end it will be a winner for sure.
even though the cw should have kept justin as green arrow for this go around looking to see what this guy does in the role.
It will take a lot to win me over as Justin Hartley is Green Arrow to me.
I expect it to be every bit as good as ‘Birds of Prey’ and ‘Aquaman’.
David Nutter also directed the Smallville, Supernatural and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles pilots.
This is a pro.
Hailing from The CW comes to you: a really stupid and awful project that will run for many seasons with the tweens.
Green Lantern was not an epic fail. It had some problems for sure, but it wasnt that bad.
This guy looks like he’d make a great Green Arrow. Hope they keep the beard. Thats the one thing I hated about Hartley…that chin dimple was a dead giveaway. Should have had him bearded when he was Green Arrow.
I hope “Laurel” eventually becomes Canary. I always thought that character could thrive in a modest-budget, indie-style flick of her own.
GREEN LANTERN was so bad they can’t call this show GREEN ARROW
IMHO-The smart money would have been on continuing with Smallville’s Justin Hartley as Green Arrow. They had a built-in audience of Smallville fans & it appears those fans weren’t given a second thought. This “Green Arrow” may be successful without Justin-,but, I for one, will definitely NOT be watching.Thank you.
When will you people get it?
The people making these decisions do not “care about the fans”. They do what they want to do.
Every book that gets adapted or series that gets ordered with a switch in actor, brings about all these, “I can’t believe they are spiting in the face of the fans with this casting.”
They don’t care about you. I wish they did, but they don’t.
They’ll never admit that in any interviews, but it’s true.
I’m a fan of Smallville and I hated Justin Harley on that role. I thought he murdered the role, and turned it into Green Abercrombie.
I love the character Green Arrow, so I’m glad they’re giving the character at least a fighting chance for mass appeal.
I still wish they got a black Green Arrow.
Justin Hartley would have been Better
I hated Justin Hartley’s Green Lantern and I blame that more on the ridiculous origins of the character on Smallville for that. I enjoy the darker interpretations of the character.
Are they naming it just Arrow to avoid the Green Lantern confusion? Come on CW, don’t be so self-loathing about your branding.
He better at least have a beard.
Hartley was the Green Arrow, Ryan Reynolds was the Green Lantern. i think they are naming the show Arrow to avoid connection to the CW colors…
Its Green Arrow not Green Lantern. Yes Justin is no oscar award winning actor, but he is decent, he got a young Green Arrow just about right. He can act circles around this guy. I’m telling you this is a very big mistake, this casting is a giant fluke, he is not right for this role. This new guy is wooden, has no spark, and he is going to bore all of us to tears. This is no Green Arrow. CW have just signed the death warrant of this show.
RECAST RECAST RECAST RECAST RECAST RECAST RECAST RECAST….(I cant say it enough), before its too late to go back. Give Justin at least a chance to audition or else find someone else who can work Ollie. Its not this guy. Do it for your network, do it for the fans, and most importantly do it for Green Arrow.
Horrible decision.
They should have gone with Justin Hartley.
