After dropping significant hints earlier this week, Stephen Colbert made it official last night on The Colbert Report: He’s entering the Republican presidential primary in his home state of South Carolina. Or planning to. But first, he consulted his lawyer who informed Colbert he’d have to relinquish control of his Super PAC to enter the race. No problem. He summoned The Daily Show‘s Jon Stewart. Soberly pledging not to coordinate the political spending of the super PAC on Colbert’s behalf, the Comedy Central channel-mates signed papers effecting transfer of control to Stewart. Now that he’s legal, Colbert announced that he’s forming “an exploratory committee to lay the groundwork for my possible candidacy for the president of the United States of South Carolina.” One technicality remains, however. He missed a November 1 filing deadline, and in South Carolina write-in candidates are not allowed in political party primaries or elections for president and vice president. He also tried to run as a Democrat in 2007 but the party removed him from the ballot. Undaunted, he may not be a frontrunner in the polls, but as he pointed out Wednesday, he’s ahead of Jon Huntsman.

I’m lovin’ this! Citizens United was a terrible decision that Colbert is brutally mocking. It would be wonderful if this resulted in real reform.
not that he would be wise to listen to some rando like me, but i think the american genius should run on an actual republican platform. if he wants to go to the next level with this joke, practical policy positions would be great. show us what a great republican candidate SHOULD look like. please?
This less about Colbert running for president (by Monday he’ll have to announce he can’t really run in SC) and more about pointing out what a joke the SuperPACs are. He can’t coordinate, but he can muse outloud what sort of ads the SuperPAC can make to attack his opponent. Jon Huntsman’s dad runs his SuperPAC – you don’t think Jon and Pop aren’t in communications. You don’t think Jon Stewart can’t take tips on how to spend the Super PAC from Colbert’s on air musings over the next month?
Colbert is also exposing how China can spend millions of dollars to get their candidate in office. It’s illegal for China to give to a presidential campaign. However it’s “legal” for China to give millions to a Super PAC’s 501 (c)(4) which doesn’t have to disclose it’s donor. The 501 (c)(4) can then give the millions to a candidate’s SuperPAC only disclosing it came from the 501 (c)(4) and not the originators of the cash. Thanks to the Supreme Court, China is now going to be a major player in the 2012 campaign.
And that’s the funny because we’re living in a joke thanks to Citizens United.
So true. Thanks for saying that.
Honestly, if he were able to legitimately run as a candidate, I’d vote for Colbert as the Republican nominee over any of the other a#$ clowns running for the nomination.
“Thanks to the Supreme Court, China is now going to be a major player in the 2012 campaign.”
Uh, yeah, like they didn’t funnel money into 2008.
But now they can do it free and legal! Thanks Chief Justice Roberts!
