EXCLUSIVE: Steven Spielberg is near to etching in stone with Warner Bros on that biopic portraying the Jewish leader as the warrior to beat all warriors. With a working title of Gods And Kings, what’s envisioned is “a movie like a Braveheart-ish version of the Moses story,” an insider tells us. “Him coming down the river, being adopted, leaving his home, forming an army, and getting the Ten Commandments.” And despite the awesome screen possibilities of the parting of the Red Sea, the movie isn’t being contemplated in 3D. Back in 1956, Paramount released The Ten Commandments in VistaVision to give moviegoers a more spectacular experience of scenes like that. But this film is as far from a remake of the Cecile B. DeMille-directed epic as you can get even though they cover similar ground. Instead Warner Bros wants Spielberg to direct it with the gritty reality of Saving Private Ryan, which is considered a masterpiece redefining battle movies. ”There have been glossy versions of the Moses story but this would be a real warrior story,” an insider tells us.
The studio has wanted Spielberg on the project since last September when he first read the script. (See previous, Warner Bros Goes To The Mountaintop For Moses Epic.) Getting Spielberg seemed a long shot because his deals are always complex and his dance card is always full. Talks intensified, and now insiders tell us the dialogue should consummate by the end of the month. Warner Bros wants to start production sometime in March or April of 2013.
Producer Matti Lesham came to the studio with a treatment that was bought for development. The film is being produced by Dan Lin and Lesham. The two writers are Stuart Hazeldine (the upcoming epic Paradise Lost for Legendary/Warner Bros and inspired by the John Milton poem) and Michael Green (co-writer of Warner Bros’ Green Lantern and the upcoming ABC midseason series The River for Spielberg”. It’s the first time they’ve scripted together.
Spielberg just finished directing Lincoln and is already working on Robopocalypse: both are DreamWorks pics co-financed by Twentieth Century Fox. Spielberg wants a big film next and this is it: Ten Commandments was one of the most profitable films of its era, grossing $65 million in 1956 — which in today’s dollars is equivalent to close to $1 Billion theatrical. Spielberg helmed another seminal Jewish movie, Schindler’s List which won seven Oscars at the 66th Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. He was just overlooked for a Best Director nomination on Tuesday for War Horse even though it received a Best Picture nod.
Meanwhile this marks the second high-profile film Warner Bros is developing on a seminal Jewish hero. Mel Gibson and Joe Eszterhas are collaborating on their pitch to tell the story of Jewish warrior Judah Maccabee, who teamed with his father and four brothers to lead the Jewish revolt against the Greek-Syrian armies that had conquered Judea in the 2nd century B.C. Gibson has the first option to direct, and he will produce the film through his Icon Productions banner.

Cautiously optimistic because it’s Spielberg. That said, the Moses story wasn’t a warrior story.
Mpses was a warrior. A ruthless one at that. Just what his people needed at that time. He was much more than what the old testament mentions.
Really? What documents are you basing your knowledge upon?
Josephus wrote about Moses as an Egyptian military leader against the Ethiopians. Look it up for yourself.
Though I have never given thought to this matter before, it is quite possible. Remember, Moses was a “son” of the pharaoh. As such, he was raised as one. He learned everything he needed to know to either rule or become second-in-command. The fact that he was the meekest proves that he had strength. Meek does not equal strength. Meekness is strength under control. In order for one to be the meekest, one would first have to be the strongest. Meekness is measured by the amount of strength or ability one has that is under control.
And the written accounts of Moses as a military leader AFTER he left Egypt, stayed gone years, and came back to lead the Jewish Nation are?
This will be typical modern Hollywood, why be good when we can be clever? Why be factually correct when the masses are stupid and will accept whatever we put out? Spielberg is about due for a flop (though The Pacific was partially his baby) and this will be it.
Good grief! Moses was separated from Josephus by over 1200 years. That’s not exactly a primary source!
Better not have George Clooney or Jenn Aniston or leo Dicrapi in it.
I think Garry Shandling would be perfect to portray Moses.
Thank you. Now, it gives me goose bumps to imagine what kind of filth will be in this movie. Only God knows. True artists might be able to improve on the original, but the modern tendency to fill everything with illicit sex and extreme violence makes me pretty sure I wouldn’t want to see the “new” Moses. The old one wasn’t exactly true to the Scriptures in all places but it did honor God and didn’t offend those of us who believe sex should be reserved for the bedroom. All in all, it was an extremely good movie. So sorry Spielberg thinks he can improve on it. Maybe if he consulted with conservative, bible believing rabbi’s?
Oh stop! Production hasn’t even begun and you’re already prediting all the filthy places Spielberg is certain to take this movie?! Why are you jumping to such unfounded conclusions? Why so certain Spielberg would turn this into soft core porn?! Are you referencing some other gratuitous sex scenes in his movies? I would much rather see Spielberg’s take on the epic Jewish figure of Moses than Cecil B DeMille’s hollywood extravaganza.
For those that care… and want to see the best movie that was done about Moses, the one that is closest to the biblical account, was the one produced for the 6 part “Bible Series” on DVD, Starring Ben Kingsley, 1996 TNT Originals / Turner / Lube Production. This one was absolutely fantastic, did not focus on special effects and rather the spiritual development and character of Moses and his relationship with God. It is pure joy.
If he was “much more than the old testament mentions” where exactly is that extra info coming from?
The Bible says Moses was the meekest man who ever lived. God was the warrior, Moses was his servant.
In the bible the word “meek” was a Greek word used to describe a wild horse that had been trained for war. True meekness in the Biblical sense means that the person is surrendered to his/her leader through training and able to be used for His purposes. Seems that describes Moses to me! I’ve spent many years studying Moses. Here’s my site.
Yes – good point. Meekness is bridled-strength. A horse capable of tearing a human limb-from-limb because of his strength can none-the-less be controlled by a simple bridle. Thus meekness shows strenth that is put aside. It is, in some circles, considered the opposite side of the coin from humility.
Exactly right on “meekness” – strength under control. Don’t you also love the “common” description of “Shalom”? “Nothing is missing, nothing is broken”. Yes!!!!!!
“The Bible says Moses was the meekest man who ever lived”
Then I nominate Woody Allen for the title role. That, I would pay to see.
Perfectly said….I hope and ‘pray’ that this movie can really be word for word..from the Old Testament…how amazing would that be!
Do it right, Steven….please and thank you in adance.
Obviously you’ve never read the Bible otherwise you would know that what you said is not true!
:-O Jeff, where do you get THIS information?
Did that awesome information appear to you in a dream….or is this some stuff you just wrote?!
The “old testament” is not old, it lives on today as can be attested to by the number of Jews who live by it. It’s call the Torah.
Moses was not a warrior, he was a leader. If you read a correct English translation of the Hebrew, you will find that Aaron spoke for him mainly, but Moses prayed for and led our people out of a terrible place.
There was no war. The fighting as we fled was against Amalek (y”sh).
Mr.Speilberg needs to go back to Shul, read the Torah and get his facts straight before making a mockery of one of the most important events ever to occur on this earth.
One word Mr.Speilberg: Tshuvah.
I hope and pray that Speilberg, the script writers, etc all come together to read the Torah or at least the Old Testament first and attempt a biblical understanding of the times and the man, before they proceed. I agree wholeheartedly that Moses is not portayed in scripture as a warrior in the sense that most would conjure in our minds when considering the term.
That was the point. Moses had to rely on God to move the day, to move the people of Egypt and to move the Jewish people. Moses did not feel he had the power or strength and God was who carried the day, either directly, or through others that he sent, such as Aaron. I am sure that Moses was not weak in mind, body or spirit, but it must be related that God uses broken people to work His great plan, as this is intregral to the teaching.
I am not Jewish but I am with you on this. Mosses killed an Egyptian man, and held his arms up at the battle of Rephidim agains Amalek. Not seeing the Braveheart connection here. If you want Braveheart then do the story of Joshua and the people entering the promised land.
You are correct.
Oh really? How do you know that?
Moses was indeed a Warrior, and God demanded some actions that would shock a modern audience. The victorious Israelites were often required to kill women, children, infants and even domestic animals*. That will be the most challenging aspect for Spielberg if he, as they say, “goes there.”
*Just to be fair, almost all ancient warfare involved complete annihilation. If the Israelites did not utterly destroy the Amalek and Caananites, the Amalekites and the Caananites would likely utterly destroy them.
Moses went to the Mountaintop and saw the Promised Land, but was forbidden to enter, he died on the mountaintop for his sins. He was not with Joshua when they went into Canaan.
Heffe,
Uhm, and which “sins” are we talking about?
As I recall, it was for ONE sin.
And he never said Moses destroyed the Caananites. If you read it, he said Israelites.
Bob – Where in the Torah does it say that Moses destroyed anything? And where does it say Moses “destroyed” the “Israelites”?
*Gasp!* Even domestic animals!?!
Sounds like the modern day Iranians.
Sounds more like the modern day israeli’s.
As I understand the bible, when the Israelites were ordered to wipe out a people, it was God’s judgment, using the Israelites as His tool of judgment. Their sin was “ripe” and in God’s perfect timing, judgment fell. The children of that people were much better off in heaven than being raised to fight against God and everything good. Moses, if it makes any real difference, was a leader first, and leaders always encounter conflict, so that would make him a general as well. Ok? Tell me.
Ernestine, I find it absolutely disgusting that you can actually state that being brutally slaughtered by barbaric savages is an entirely acceptable and desirable fate for children. You realize that this is the same exact attitude that motivates terrorists, right?
Why then are the chosen people of a loving, merciful God not above such barbaric and primitive actions? Also, you forgot to mention the mass rape of the Midianite virgin girls in Numbers 31. I guess I’m forgetting though that in the minds of the believers, evil is righteous when commanded by God. What a revolting belief system.
Correct. Moses was a prophet and a judge in Israel, not “a warrior” as such. [as, say King David, for instance; or Jehu]. Moses was not “a superman”. … but THE GOD he serves was BEYOND “superman”. – well beyond ALL of that.(!)
Amen and amen, glory to His name! I am a “descendant of Abraham” spiritually because of the faith factor, according to the New Testament. I realize that Jewish people probably will not accept that but I believe the entire old and new testaments are the Word of God without error. And I love the Jewish people because out of Israel came my Savior, my Bible, and my salvation.
Moses left Egypt to be committed to God’s Laws: he was more conservative than any Evangelical or Orthodox Jew. How can a Hollywood liberal possibly do justice to the most Critical story of the Old Testament? Any believing Jew or Christian should protest this movie. There is no need to even see it or read the script. They have already started to spin the story with the braveheart thing. I am sure even Mel Gibson would do the story more justice. Sticking to the scripture has enough material and intrigue enough.
I agree that Hollywood will spin this to the point where Moses becomes a superhero (Spartacus) instead of the obedient servant of God. The story of Moses is a story of the power of God choosing one servant to save the descendants of Joseph and Jacob (Israel) enslaved in Egypt from 1700BC – 1280BC. This is a period where the descendants of Abraham hears nothing from God for 400 years. Has God forgotten them? A new Pharaoh rose to power and made them his slaves. The greatest and most important event in Old Testament history is how God brought His people safely through the Red Sea, established them as a nation so they could live as the free children of God and structured His people through the establishment of laws not swords. The fighting comes after the death of Moses when Israel crosses the Jordan but this time frame is 1240BC – 1050BC as described in the book of Judges. Then the real fighting begins when Kings are established and the period of the Kings Samuel, David and others lead to the Divided Kingdom of the 12 tribes of Israel/Judah. A fascinating story, and I am sure a lot of action that Spielberg would love…but as far as war/action/bloodshed in the story of Exodus and the character of Moses…not by Moses…only by God sending punishment upon Egypt for their disobedience until his people are released.
the Moses story wasn’t a warrior story’
Moses is a bible story because I believe there is no other record of his existence. I have watched many stories on the history channel and read many books and no one claims that the Jews were ever in Egypt building the monuments as shown in the other major epic the 10 commandments.
The History channel, you say? It must be correct, therefore, as I am pretty sure they have exclusive access to the only working time machinge in existence and can go back and look at the events in person
thats because the pagan Egiptian Scribes and Priests chiseled any record of them out of Egyptian History on Purpose. They served gods who didn´t benefit from such a huge defeat and embarassment as what happened. They worshiped the nile, God turned it to blood, they worshiped frogs, God filled the land of Egypt with frogs, plus destroying their army and god-king in the red sea(reed sea). Do you think that would be a good for their religion(position of control over their people)?
Think it over, if they were smart enough to figure out the Earth was round and build the pyrimids perfectly aligned with the stars thy could easily scrape some hyroglyfics of some rocks!!!!!
Hello the Moses(p.b.h.h) story is in the koran too(and its very good) there are more details there then in the bible. I hope they use that one. Peace
Moshe was a complex character who was as ecclesiastical, political, as well as military leader. Though it was true that G-d fought for Israel during the flight from Egypt, there were plenty of battles to fight during the 40 years wandering in the wilderness. If done with fidelity to the Torah and other reliable ancient sources, this could be a landmark movie and a crowning achievement for Spielberg.
Agreed ! Leave it to Hollywood to complete twist a story!
the cohen brothers should really direct this one…with “the dude” as moses
Moses carried a shepherd’s crook because he shepherded for 40 years in the wildnerness, and he shepherded the Children of Israel for 40 years to the Promised Land. When they entered the Promised Land they were led by Joshua who carried a spear. He was the general who fought Amelek on the way and led the battles in the Promised Land. If you want the spiritual meaning of the Exodus, Moses, Pharaoh and the Promised Land see this website. It’s quite amazing.
The bible says that Moses had a speech impediment, he stuttered. Do you suppose this will be correctly displayed in the movie?
You have obviously never actually read through the Bible…
You’re clearly not that familiar with the Bible and the history that backs it. Moses was a great warrior and an incredible tactician
Oy.
Not. More like the chutzpah missing from most films. Amen.
Thank you. I second that…oy….
Talking about box office gross from a similar movie in 1956 like it will indicate the numbers sixty years later is ridiculous.
Oh Boy, I just can’t wait to see how Speilberg and the writes screw up MOses and tak God completely out of the picture.
That’s what I’m worried about as well. There is no Moses story without God.
I totally agree.
Wrong. There is no Moses MYTH without God. To believe that Moses actually got the Ten Commandments on a mountaintop from “God” is to know nothing about the Egyptian faith Moses was raised in (which is where he actually got the Ten Commandments from).
One guy goes up a mountain alone, pilfers ten laws from a larger belief code he’d known and promoted for years, then comes down the mountain and claims to his superstitious followers that “God” gave him those laws…and for the rest of history we’re supposed to accept that?
That would be like me going down to the Amazon, joining that one tribe there that has had no contact with the outside world, climbing up into a tree, coming down with some laws I’d written that are very similar to the Bill of Rights of the U.S. Constitution, and claiming that God personally gave them to me…and then for the rest of history it’s generally accepted that codes like “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion…or abridging the freedom of speech” first came into existence when they were given to me by God in a tree in the Amazon. And the few people that pointed out that I’d studied and known about this thing called the U.S. Constitution with the exact same language as my “God-given” laws would be ignored or called crazy.
Why don’t you show us where those specific laws contained in the 10 commandments existed in Egypt before Moses received them.
Google Egyptian book of the Dead…. Its WAY older than the 10 commandments, and was ripped off almost word for word.
Hey that worked for the Mormons !
I think you should be called both crazy and Mr. Twisty. You are attempting to twist both the telling of the time of Moses and your silly interpretation of the U.S. Constitution in an attempt to justify some other motive. If you do not believe that the Bible or Torah are Divinely written, fine, dispute it all you want. I believe that you will one day get the opportunity to dispute this face to Face someday, so it’s not really my issue. I do take issue with your twisted interpretation of the Constitution though. You may wish to read the whole context instead of selectively taking passages ad hoc. It means that Congress can not promote one religious system over another, as an example, let’s say the Church of England. You are attempting to be both disingenuous and misleading.
Before Moses went up the mountain, all of Israel was assembled at the foot of the mountain and the entire group heard the voice of God proclaim the laws. THEN Moses went up on the mountain and received the laws on tablets. The reason he went up there was because the people pleaded to not hear God’s voice again and wanted Moses to be the go-between. They had no problem accepting the tablets with the laws as from God–the people had already heard the voice of God speaking from the mountain.
This is the only reason the laws were ever accepted as coming from God and not Moses. The people were very unruly and several miracles (some great, some terrible) kept the people in line. At one point, God was so frustrated with the people He decided to kill them all and start over with Moses. However, Moses prayed for the people and God changed His mind.
Stories such as this bring out the anti-Semitic and anti-Christian voices very quickly, particularly when Drudge picks up on the articles. Unfortunate.
I imagine the “superstitious followers” hadn’t seen the Red Sea part (to dry land), hadn’t seen the plagues, hadn’t seen the firstborn of Egypt killed because of Pharaoh’s arrogance, and hadn’t seen any other actual evidence that God was with them? No, actually, they’d seen the evidence that their faith in God was not in vain.
Sorry, whoever you are, your diatribe doesn’t work.
This is from the Wikipedia article on Maat (Egyptian Law)
Maat and the law
There is little surviving literature that describes the practice of ancient Egyptian law. Maat was the spirit in which justice was applied rather than the detailed legalistic exposition of rules (as found in Mosaic law of the 1st millennium BCE).
What Moshe received was a return to the truth which Adam and Eve would have known about and passed on. Noah did things described in the law (as in taking 7 of each ‘clean’ animal along with 2 of the unclean). Why would he have done this prior to the ‘Law’ being given? I think major parts of the law were known (certainly the Sabbath was instituted at Creation) but not formally written down in a ‘code’.
As the years went on humanity diverged and went it’s own way creating gods and godesses and God’s people learned these ways in Egypt. He then uses Moshe as an instrument to call out his people from the world and to ‘true’ worship of the Creator and not the creation.
No kidding. They want a “300″ version of a Bible story, and I expect that it will be as close to “Godless” as a Bible story can get from Today’s Hollywood. Hollywood truly has no shame anymore, they’ll rob any grave and bastardize it for a dollar.
Organized religon has already basterdized the story of the Bible already. The bible is refrenced as a history book instead as a book for a daily instructional script ‘hence Scriptures” and what ever hollywood does with is will knot matter. Hollywood hasent a clue as to what it does anyway but if one undedrstands the hidden mataphor to what does get scripted thru man/any man’ can still provide some insights to understanding some of the mystery of a God period.I felt alot of qualities for a God in the movie Secratariat even if the writers felt none. gods image can knot be touched know matter what man invisions as God is Spirit and thats the air you breathe and if you think otherwise then just let someone start choking you to find out how much you can do without his breath.
Precisely my thought!
God epics sell tickets.
Spielberg + Religion + SPRyan quality = Billion in sales and Oscar.
Here comes another opportunity for mass media blasphemy…
It’s a real career risk for Spielberg. I doubt any director, even with today’s special effects, can top the eternal hit by Cecil B. DeMille.
Can you imagine any of today’s Hollywood starlets playing Nefriti the way it was done by Anne Baxter, not to mention Chuck Heston as Moses?
Charlton Heston WAS Moses. He’s gone now, taken directly to Heaven I believe. I wonder if Sean Connery would fit the part.
Yea maybe if it was a British production so the Scottish accent wouldnt be noticed.
Don’t forget Yule Brenner as Pharaoh.
Yul not Yule. Brynner. Yul Brynner.
I cannot imagine any of today’s girly men playing Moses or Pharaoh.
It’s hysterical to imagine Brad Pitt or George Clooney in either of those roles. The only thing fitting for them would be the robes they wore back then. Of course they would be updated with today’s dresses.
Daniel Day Lewis
well, in a manner of speaking, it was. crusading against the Pharaoh back then could be considered warrior-esque. Escaping persecution, being a freedom fighter in an MLK sense, up until the Red Sea came crashing back down on the soldiers of course.
Funny, Chuck Heston played Moses and crusaded for MLK in real life.
He was also president of the NRA.
Ditto to what everyone said. Does anyone remember how much he completely rewrote scripture for the animated Dreamworks Moses movie back in the late 90s? And making Moses “as Braveheart?” Last time I checked Moses was called “the meekest of all men”, at least in the bibles I’ve read….
Addressed above. The word “meek” means strength under control, as in “meeking” a horse when one is tamed.
Don’t confuse meekness with weakness; they are polar opposites.
Puuulese do not cast Leonardo,Aflac,Damon,Downey Jr, or any other over used hacks, except maybe Russel Crowe. He’s good at everything.
sacha baron cohen for the lead
I totally agree and Russel Crowe scrossed my mind too
Already been there, done that. What could be better than “The Ten Commandments”? Sorry, Steve, you are not going top that one.
Moses was not a warrior. He led no one in battle. The first real warrior for the Children of Israel was Sampson, and of course King David.
SAmson – not. It was Joshua.
Um…don’t forget Joshua. Now there was a warrior!
Uh, Joshua, Moses’ right- hand man
How bout Joshua of conquering Canaan and Jericho fame? He preceded Samson
Only a Christian would say Moses was not a warrior. He spent 20 years in Ethiopia
Where he was a general and and a great warrior. Read up on your Jewish history
Well, I don’t know anything about Moses’ Ethiopian military background, but my lack of knowledge doesn’t take away anything from that statement. I’m just going to assume none of that military history is going to be playing out on Spielberg’s movie screen because most people tend to associate Moses with the leading the Jews out of slavery in Egypt, not defeating the Ethiopians.
Either way, Moses was a leader of the people and yet a bystander in his own story. The bulk of the action — parting of the Red Sea, the plagues, the angel of death and passover — were events done by God, not Moses. All of this was done and emphasized so well in the 1956 move, that I don’t know how Spielberg can take it and make it any different by making it into a “warrior” story. Maybe I’m looking at it all too literally, but a good “warrior story” would be Samson, or David and Goliath, or Joshua, like the other posters said. Good luck to Spielberg, either way.
All of Moses’ military background was trumped by him becoming a prophet and leader of Israel. To focus on Moses’ military career prior to that, automatically means it will be a Godless story.
I’m a Christian and I believe that God used Moses as a leader, prophet and warrior. The Isrealites had to conquer Og and Sihon in the book of Numbers under Moses. While I don’t think it details whether he specifically fought, he certainly commanded his men into battle.
The worst idea ever. Go to Lifetime and make it. Nobody cares about these epic pics anymore.
Build it, they will come. For reasons they can’t even fathom.
No one cares about epic pics? Gladiator, Avatar, Titanic, Schindler’s List. In a way one might argue Batman: Dark Knight Returns was an epic. It will depend how its down and how it compares with Cecil B DeMille. God will need to be shown very powerfully with the best special effects along with a compelling personal story.
You will not get this from the idiots in hollyfreak nor from this director.
no one cares about epic pictures? then why are ethey the top grossing films of all time? that is just a stupid remark,
Gladiator, Avatar, Titanic, Schindler’s List
Worldwide: $457,640,427 Gladiator
‘Avatar’ Claims Highest Gross of All Time$2.075 billion.
Titanic $1,843,201,268
$96,067,179Schindler’s List
add it is approxiamtely 4 and 1/2 billion dollars from the 4 films you mentioned, and speilberg has taken in almost 5 billion with the combined success of all his major movies, he makes a good film, one that is oscar worthy that recives accoltes and makes money. people should give him the beinifit of the doubt. and for all you bible beliving christian’s, read your bible there are many bible battles under moses, and perhaps god will work through these directors. or at least follw the rules of christ and ‘judge not lest ye be judged’ wait til its out see it, if then it is pure crap, say so. but dont pre-judge..
We seen an epic Moses. If you want to see a warrior flux do an epic life of King David
I thought an Epic of Kind David was done with Richard Gere and it bombed?
Not enough “name recognition” for King David.
bob,bob,bob….
King David was pivital in Jewish history. He has plenty of ‘name recognition’.
Only in christiandom can you find some of the ignorant posts about our holy Patriarchs
Please don’t paint all Christians as ignorant of the Old Testament just because Bob is. We read BOTH books because you can’t understand the new without the old.
Not just meek, but also glowing. He had a glow to his face after the burning bush. Can’t wait to see how that gets treated, SPR style.
Actually, it was when Moses went up the mountain for 40 days and 40 nights in God’s presence to receive the second set of tablets with the 10 commandments on them: Exodus 34
I saw Ten Commandments when I was 9, as a required homework for a report. I walked out of there with my hair standing on end and my little Catholic brain on overload.
I realized who the God of the Bible was. Definitely to be respected.
I hope Speilberg gives God His just due. I won’t go otherwise. God knows the world needs a dose of fear and respect for the Almighty and will this movie produce the hair-raising, mind blowing thing that GOD exists? We shall see.
If God needs somebody to make a movie for people to fear/believe in him. Then there is nothing to fear from god.
Moses was a warrior, but against his own kin. Remember after the 10 Commandments he did not lead his people to the Promised Land till after the generation that worshipped the fatted calf was gone. He was a warrior enough!
The Jews were caused to walk the desert for 40 years because they refused to cross the river Jordan into the promise land.It wasn’t caused by them worshiping the gold calf !
…No where in the old testament scripture do you read Moses was a warrior.
He did murder an Egyptian who was abusing the Jews, but thats when he fled Egypt and eventually became a herder of sheep or goats, before God spoke to him and sent him to Egypt to free Gods children !
Study the bible Mike
Actually, you might remember that when he came back down from the mountain, he found the people of Israel had gone wayward. Moses had all those who sided with him kill all those who did not (the rebellious wayward). This was not just a brutal and instantaneous civil war, but a total slaughter. If this doesn’t say “warrior”, I don’t know what would.
You’re getting your theologies confused; fatted calf–New Testament: Luke 15. Molten calf–Old Testament: Exodus 32 : 4. Thank you very much!
They were not called Jews then. They were call Hebrews or Israelites
The first noteable warrior for the Jews was certainly Moses, and then noteably Joshua. The Jews ethnically cleansed the highlands of Palestine of all of its previous people. Get your Bible straight, or shut up.
No I think you need to study the bible…and I’d tell you to shut up but you won’t and you’ll continue to tell an untruth ! So expect to be corrected with Gods truth !
Moses, as conceived by the co-writer of “Green Lantern” and brought to the screen by the director of “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.” What could possibly go wrong?
Actually… This sounds rather reasonable. Moses was kind of a superhero… and anybody who is a comic book geek should know that Superman was created by two nice Jewish boys (Jerry Siegel, Joe Schuster) as a Messianic figure that was modeled largely on Moses.
Hahahahahahaha
Bob,
Can’t help it if you are not up on Pop Culture history. Moses placed in a reed boat and sent down the Nile to escape destruction from the forces of Pharoah, Baby Kal-El (a Jewish name meaning “The Perfect God) placed in a pod-like Spacecraft to escape the destruction of Krypton… both Messianic figures.
There were other influences as well (Samson, John Carter of Mars), but Moses was probably the primary influence on the development of the character of Superman. I’m sure someone will say that I am oversimplifying… and yes there is much more to how Supes developed… but there’s Wikipedia for that.
Okay… call me Nuts and totally out of my mind (‘cuz I probably am…), but I think Spielberg needs to cast Gibson as… Moses! The more I think about it… the more I like it… but I’m crazy, right?
Yes, you’re crazy but it’s my kind of crazy.
That could work.
Now THAT would be an epic!
I TOTALLY agree. That would be outstanding.
Great! The Egyptians will carry swastikas, the pharaoh a Chaplin mustache, and Moses a list.
And you know this because you were there…
I just wish Hollywood would keep it’s grubby hands off of the scriptures.
I would like to see an epic film on Emperor Constantine one of these days.
I’ve wanted to see that movie for years.
Yes, it would be fascinating to see how the Romans, previously known for killing off all the original prophets and apostles of Christianity and working for 3 CENTURIES to drive Christinaity into extinction, suddenly decided to invent their own paganized version of Christianity, and force it on the people as a new state government while claiming to be the unbroken line of Christian authority all the way back to Peter. That would be fascinating indeed. I hope they include the scene of the council of Nicea in 325AD, when all the religious experts sat around a table and argued about who God should be so Rome could adopt it, none of them getting it right.
I don’t think such movie would go over very well with Catholics.
Steven the first Apostle killed was stone to death by his own Brethren…Fellow Jews/Israelite/Hebrews !
At trial by the Sanhedrin in in Acts6:8-15 and then stoned by his Brethren in Acts 7:54-60 !
Study before you make claims to untruth !
Spare us, Steven. Moses was a Jew, not a pretend jew as you have amply demonstrated yourself to be.
Moses is a Jew?
Where does that come from?
He never live in Judea.
He never practiced Judaism.
There is no indication he is descended of the Tribe of Judah
How is a Jew defined?
Hunter – you hit the nail on the head – Moses was an Isralite but not a jew.
Moses and God seemed to think he was Jewish. Have you read Exodus? Anyhow, Spielberg is Jewish and seems to be respectful of things of this nature. I doubt if he wants to add a new twist. It is a great story which we hope will be well told.
Moses was a descendant of the House of Levi one of the 12 tribes of Israel who were enslaved in Egypt. His mother was a Levite and his father was a Levite. Levi was one of the 12 sons of Jacob (Israel). The laws handed to Moses by God structured the Jewish nation and the Jewish worship of one God. You can say Moses, through God, established Judaism.
There are 12 tribes of the Israelites. Moses was of the Levite tribe not of Judah. Of course Moses practiced Judaism. How else would Jews all over the world for thousands of years keeping the same laws if not it being taught by Moses from God. Don’t you think over such a long period without access to eachother Jewish laws would be lost by now.
Jews see Moses as a Rabbi and teacher not as a warrior or superman.
The Jews of today are a mix of the tribes of Judah which is the majority and of Benjamin and Levi. Judea and Samaria were names given to 2 kingdoms. The Samarian kingdom were of the remaining tribes who are not with the Jews of today.
What an arrogant thing to say, rawhead. Classy.
