EXCLUSIVE: Dakota Fanning, Elizabeth Olsen and Anton Yelchin are in final negotiations to star in Very Good Girls, the directing debut of screenwriter Naomi Foner. The project, shooting this June in New York, is being financed by Norton Herrick’s Herrick Entertainment and produced through Michael London’s Groundswell Productions alongside Lee Clay and Herrick. Hawk Koch and Gale Anne Hurd are executive producers. Fanning and Olsen play lifelong best friends in the summer after their high school graduation, both determined to lose their virginity as a rite of passage into the adult world. When they fall in love with the same boy (Yelchin), their quest becomes much more complicated and emotionally dangerous than they ever imagined. They come out of the summer more women than girls, but in ways that they never imagined. Olsen and Yelchin turned in breakout performances at last year’s Sundance, in Martha Marcy May Marlene and Like Crazy.
The film is the first in a newly signed partnership between Groundswell and Herrick. The companies will collaborate on three-five movies per year with Groundswell and Herrick both generating projects that Herrick will finance. Herrick and Groundswell will produce them under London and Groundswell head of production Janice Williams. Their second film will be The Hollars, written and to be directed by Jim Strouse (Grace is Gone). The film is a comedy about the men in an eccentric Midwestern family facing the loss of the family matriarch. It will shoot in July and is casting up quickly. Very Good Girls is a longtime passion project for Foner, whose script credits include Running On Empty, Losing Isaiah and Bee Season. “The film deals with female sexuality and friendship in a way we haven’t seen before,” said Foner. “These girls will be stunning young women in a couple of years, but they’ve struggled through high school with only each other. Most of us have been there. This is the summer where they finally get to touch real life.” Foner’s repped by CAA, Fanning by One Talent Management, Olsen by Gersh and Independent Artists, and Yelchin by CAA and Brillstein. CAA packaged the film and is selling domestic.

I’m sorry, Anton Yelchin is not a romantic lead. I found Like Crazy to be incredibly implausible because I didn’t buy that either Felicity Jones or Jennifer Lawrence would fall in love with him. Maybe it’s superficial, but I find him to be a bit creepy-looking, certainly not brooding or sexy. Same with this film, I doubt that Dakota and Elizabeth would go to great lengths to lose their virginity to him.
Watch Alpha Dogs, he gets some action in that. I think he could pull it off.
Any time a woman north of 60 years old gets a chance to direct her first feature, it’s interesting to say the least. Must be a lovely script. And the cast is cool.
I much prefer the title LITTLE DARLINGS. Perhaps they should consider that. And I wouldn’t cast Yelchin. They should see if Matt Dillon is available.
I was thinking the exact same thing.
Love anton yelchin. He is perfect for the role and incredible actor.
Are you kidding? Anton Yelchin ???? Please No. Get an older, more mature guy to play the part. Girls go for older guys when they want to lose it. Not boys. —Not that creepy looking Anton.
I love D.F. and I’d hate to see her in a third rate movie.
Can´t wait!!!. Anton yelchin is super cute, sexy and adorable. Loved him in the beaver.
Anton yelchin. Yes, please!!!!. I need more of him in my life. Very underrated actor.
Elizabeth olsen + dakota + anton yelchin = AWESOME!
Elizabeth olsen + dakota = awesome
Anton yelchin = AWESOME. and my only reason to watch this movie.
I’m not a fan of Dakota Fanning and did not see any movie of Elizabeth Olsen yet, but I’m became a fan of Anton Yelchin since i saw him in terminator salvation, he was so UNF in that movie.
How can anyone not be a fan of Dakota Fanning? She’s one of the least offensive actresses out there…
Weren’t Sissy Spacek and Dustin Hoffman also supposed to be in this? Between them, 13 leading role oscar nominations and 3 oscars to up the prestige. Awarded veterans and hot young actors might be a nice combo.
This will be a reunion of sorts for Anton Yelchin and Dakota Fanning. They both starred in “Steven Spielberg Presents: Taken,” a 10-night mini-series that aired on the Sci-Fi Channel nearly a decade ago. Terrific mini. It’s on DVD still, I think.
I read the script and had the same reaction. I like Yelchin but he’s not the sex god described in Foner’s script.
And yes, Hoffman was supposed to be in it. His part was about 5 minutes long. Depressing.
Glad to see Groundswell has found an investment partner to make more movies; London has great taste. Good to see a quality woman writer like Foner moving into the director chair; her children Jake & Maggie must be very proud!
Anton, Anton, Anton. Yes!!!! and Thanks
I feel like the age differences (both in actual and perceived age) will be jarring.
Don’t know if I could buy Elizabeth Olsen and Dakota Fanning playing childhood friends. Olsen could easily pass for 27 (in a good way, she has a mature quality about her). Fanning is mature for her age, but she still looks 14. Don’t know if I would buy Yelchin/Olsen either.
No offense to someone who I think is an amazing talent, but maybe Olsen’s role should be recast. But whatever, I’ll see this anyway – I like all of them.
Anton Yelchin??? Great actor, but he seems wildly miscast. Maybe they were looking through hipster-colored glasses. Again, Fanning and Olsen are great but it will be hard to buy them as contemporaries…Olsen looks her age, around 22, and it is a stretch to buy Fanning as any older than 18.
I couldn’t agree with you more. Even in FRIGHT NIGHT, he was surrounded with a stellar cast and I still didn’t see a star quality or any real essence that stood out in his performance or leading man ability. Go CAA for believing in him and giving him numerous chances. I just think there are many other sexier, more talented actors that they should invest in. If LIKE CRAZY won Sundance last year, it sure seems to be missing from the award line up this season. So we must not. E the only ones that feel that way.
If you say that anton has no talent and can´t be a leader man, go and watch Charlie bartlett, House of D, Hearts of athlantic, middle of nowhere. Anton is the best young actor working today.
LIKE CRAZY is missing from the lineup this season is because its protagonist Felicity Jones ruined the whole movie. She was unbearable to watch.
Completely agree. I get why Elizabeth Olsen and Rooney Mara are getting a lot of buzz…But Felicity? No. Also find it strange that the girl is pushing 30 and her people keep pushing her towards roles geared towards actresses in the 18 to 25 year old range.
Elle Fanning is not nearly as talented as Dakota is and lacks Dakotas charm. I say this based on her performance in Super 8.
A well-deserved BRAVO for Naomi Foner! I had the great pleasure of meeting her (and her two tots Jake and Maggie Gylenhaal) when I worked as the unit publicist on “Violets are Blue” back in 1984 shot on location in Ocean City, Maryland. Naomi had written an eloquent screenplay, which was so butchered by the Columbia hotshots that the 86-minute version released 2 years later, despite the supposed “star power” of Sissy Spacek and Kevin Kline, quickly flopped at the boxoffice (although receiving favorable reviews from Pauline Kael and Molly Haskell, among other critical heavyweights of that era). I look forward to Ms. Foner’s directorial debut, which is indeed long overdue.
How many people resentful and jealous of Anton Yelchin? Sorry guys, but He is sexy, charismatic and extraordinary actor. Like it or not.
I’m only interested in this movie because ANTON YELCHIN is gonna be in it!.
Also read the script and agree with commentators that this is the wrong casting. As talented as these three are they just don’t fit these roles as I read them. The girls are too old and the male lead should not be cute and boyish.
Anton is not a good choice for the maker lead in this kind of film. He comes across as creepy in my opinion. He would be better suited for the role of a stalker or serial killer in my opinion. The film may not do well in the box offices with him as the male lead. This plot it’s actually close to home with me. But, in the summer after my graduation my best friends and I still fantasized about being with the “hot Jock” from high school. THAT would make for a better plot, or a guy they’ve been friends with that’s as awkward as them, but grows into a great looking guy, then they both want to be with him bc they feel close to him emotionally and now his looks have made him sexually attractive. That would be closer to a real life scenario than this plot. Although, bc of my like for Dakota Fanning’s acting ability, I will probably go see the film. She will be the one that carries this film through the box offices bc of her reputation as an actress…
Anton is the perfect choice for the role and the only good thing in this movie. Can´t wait to see him in ODD THOMAS!.
If Anton Yelchin is gonna work in this movie; i definitely have to watch it. I love everything he does.
