Can Actors Be Sold On The VOD Business Model? Sundance Buyers Ponder That…
One of the hot topics of discussion at Sundance has been how viable VOD-centric releases can be in the Oscar race. While independents received 60 nominations this morning, perhaps none will help the VOD cause more than the original screenplay one J.C. Chandor received for Margin Call, the Roadside Attactions release whose VOD performance has spurred a lot of action here in Park City.

I recognize nobody wants to hear this, but a great portion of Margin Call’s success was due to its coverage in the press.
Roadside Attractions really got out there and press screened this title up and down. When it opened on VOD, the public had heard of the picture. They were interested, and WOM took over.
Let that be a lesson to those entering the VOD market. The Rotten Tomatoes group everyone loves to hate? They help.
Especially this site. They never stop taking about Margin Call.
I agree with you, Ryan S, but I think Roadside’s efforts to create buzz with mainstream financial media outlets, i.e. Squawk Box, Bloomberg, WSJ, Barron’s etc., helped it the most….probably even more than Rotten Tomatoes.
Roadside made sure people who would be interested in this topic were aware of the movie. I think “Margin Call” is a good example of a successful VOD release, but also precision marketing to a target audience.
Excellent news and proof that this model can work. In reality, it’s what indies should have been doing all along. Anyone who was a teenager when the indie movement started is now in their late 30′s/early 40′s and have kids.
We all have these films in our blood and prefer them over studio films, but don’t live close enough to an art house theater to see the films even if we wanted to drop 150 bucks on dinner/movie/ babysitter. Which WE DON’T BECAUSE WE HAVE KIDS who are EXPENSIVE.
Would I drop 10 bucks to see Margin call 2-3 weeks after it had its limited release in the 10 major film markets? Damn straight. And then guess what investors? Y ou have 10 bucks of my money YOU WOULD HAVE NEVER GOTTEN because I would have waited for cable.
PLEASE EVERYONE see THIS IS THE FUTURE of indie film making. Release your films LATE enough in the year that they have a shot a noms — leave January to JuLy to studio crap.
I totally agree. RA created a “must see” atmosphere with this film on VOD.
I am actually going to admit I paid $6.99 to stream it using BLOCKBUSTER ON DEMAND.
So how do we qualify the P+A spend on it?
