Wow. I can almost hear the money/hype being shoved into everyone’s pockets around town, along with a whisper:
“This is the film you will vote for. This is the film that will win.”
It’s like The English Patient, Shakespeare in Love and The King’s Speech all over again.
Except unlike any of those, this one actually deserves a Best Picture trophy.
You’re kidding, right?
It’s the most over-hyped trifle I’ve ever seen.
WOW. those are the best rehearsed bloopers I’ve ever seen!!!
‘The Artist’ was amusing and well made but it isn’t a best picture, it’s merely a good campaign just like the ones above you mentioned.
And if the Academy is worried about declining ratings, then I’m sure giving top prize to a silent, black-and-white foreign film will be just the thing to get the masses interested again!

Except that this film isn’t great. It’s a good movie. Direction was fantastic, but best picture??? I agree with OP. This is “The English Patient” of 2011.

Agreed! I enjoyed it as an enjoyable piece of entertainment, but then again, that’s how I felt about Thor. Best Picture???
Blooper real was just okay…but it did make me want to see the movie again so I guess it worked on me!

@MakesMeGag: We get it – you’re upset “New Year’s Eve” wasn’t nominated. Some of us enjoy non-traditional dreck that the studios put out. But good luck on your “Abduction 2″ screenplay!
I loved the movie, but I didn’t really find that blooper reel funny at all.
I can’t believe that the academy nor any of the other groups finds this movie to be the best — it makes me question if people have seen all 9 films nominated and some of the ones who weren’t (Drive, adventures of tin tin)
I almost agreed with you until you mentioned Tin Tin. You, Gags, and NHBill all prove your own points in regards personal tastes. I’ve seen eight of the nine films and this would be among the top 3 or 4.

50/50 was the best film I saw this year. I bet if it were nominated you’d have at least some people under 30 watching the Oscars because they actually know who Joseph Gordon Levitt and Seth Rogen are.
And I’m over 40.
This reel is almost as boring as the movie.
Sigh… This movie is extremely overrated. The first 20 minutes was rather charming–but the second act is way too long (and boring). Third act? Pffff. Almost non-existent.
A major disappointment…
My complaint about the Artist. NOT ENOUGH DANCE ROUTINES!!. That was the fun of old B/W and musicals, gratuitous dance and music scenes. The last 4 minutes actually makes the movie. It should’ve been done atleast 2 more times disbursed to enliven the slowed middle acts but built up to something bigger with more dancers for the finale. But then I’m a HUGE Gene Kelly WHORE, who also got into the other actor dancing performances and Rogers&Hammerstein shows.
I just realized what a disservice aggregate sites like Rotten Tomatoes does.
This movie was good. If I were a reviewer, I’d be hard pressed to give it a bad review. It’s well done, it’s clever, it’s charming. hence, almost all the review have been good, which led to a RT rating of something like 97. When I see that hight a ranking, I think wow! that movie must be one for the ages.
But it’s not. It’s just a likable, well done movie, but it’s nothing more than a trifle.
Since when does over-the-top mugging constitute a best actor nomination?. The movie was well-made and sweet but very predictable and that,for me, doesn’t make it picture of the year.The best thing about it was the dog.
