EXCLUSIVE: Dwight Schrute may finally be off to greener pastures… literally. I hear that NBC is working on an Office spinoff starring Rainn Wilson for a potential midseason 2013 launch. No deals have been closed yet but I’ve learned that the proposed spinoff is a family comedy, which was the brainchild of Wilson and The Office executive producer/showrunner Paul Lieberstein. It will have Dwight (Wilson) living at the Schrute family beet farm and bed & breakfast, which have been featured on the show several times, including in an episode where Jim and Pam visited Dwight there. (photos below) The potential spinoff will be introduced in an Office episode later this season set at Schrute Farms. “Paul and Rainn have been joking for years about Dwight’s life on the farm, his family and how ill-suited he is to run a B&B,” a source close to The Office said. “A while ago, it started to feel like a show to them. NBC agreed, it’s been further developed to include multiple generations, many cousins and
neighbors. (It is unclear if that would include cousin Mose who has been featured on the show, played by Office alum and Parks & Recreation co-creator Mike Schur.) At its base it will be about a family farm struggling to survive and a family trying to stay together.” Wilson and Lieberstein will executive produce the spinoff with The Office executive producers Ben Silverman, who has been working with Wilson and Lieberstein on the development of the project, and Howard Klein. Greg Daniels, who developed and executive produces The Office, is not involved in the offshoot. He has his hands full already with The Office, Parks & Recreation and his newly picked-up NBC comedy pilot Friday Night Dinner.
This is NBC’s second stab at launching an Office spinoff. Under Silverman, the network seriously considered the idea during the 2007-08 season but that ultimately evolved into the Amy Poehler-starring Parks & Recreation, created by The Office‘s Daniels and Schur.
If NBC proceeds with the spinoff, that will not mean an immediate departure from The Office for Wilson, once heavily tipped to succeed departing Steve Carell as the show’s new leading man. If the veteran comedy is renewed for a ninth season as many expect, Wilson will return in the fall before segueing to the new series in mideason. Deliberately or not, the writers on The Office have been planting the seeds for a potential Dwight departure from Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton office. Deeply convinced that he is the best salesman there, Dwight was crushed when
it was Andy (Ed Helms) and not he getting the manager job vacated by Michael Scott (Steve Carell). Ever since Michael left, Dwight, now No. 2 to Andy, has been unhappy and looking to do something new. He recently flew to Tallahassee to interview with uber boss Robert California (James Spader) for a position there. The setup for the spinoff, with Dwight moving to a new family environment is reminiscent of the Cheers spinoff Frasier, which also featured a switch from a workplace to family format, moving Frasier Crane (Kelsey Grammer) to a new locale.
Even with the promise of a potential new show, NBC is also serious about trying to extend the mothership series. I hear that The Office producer Universal Television has re-opened discussions with the other key Office cast members, approaching them over the past week or so with informal offers for next season. None of the core Office cast members, including Ed Helms, John Krasinksi and Mindy Kaling, have deals for next season, and while the studio can’t formally sign the actors before there is a renewal for the show, it is trying to shore them up in anticipation of a pickup. It may not be easy to get the whole gang back together. Helms has movie offers lined up, including a Hangover trequel. Krasinski had been hinting that this could be his final season on The Office as he too has been busy in features, including co-writing and starring with Matt Damon in a movie directed by Gus Van Sant, which will start shooting in April. And Kaling, who is also a writer/co-executive producer on The Office, has been actively developing her own shows and has a live-action and animated comedy in contention at NBC.

Perhaps it’s time to put the show to rest. It’s had a very good run.
I agree. Shows should say goodbye before it gets boring. Just like Friends and Will & Grace did. (Remember, the show “Joey” didn’t get good ratings at all after Friends.)
I agree as well. It has been one of my favorite programs since it’s been aired, but this year, it’s really lost steam. Spader and that British chick simply do not satisfy. THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID!
If Jim leaves, I will stop watching the show.
if jim leaves ill jump off a cliff
Considering Mike Schur played Mose, I doubt he’d be full time. He has his hands full on Parks and Rec and is on record as hating the beard they put on him when he plays the part.
Oh, boo hoo.
There’s no reason to do so. He has no star power to carry that show. See: Joey. The only hope is to bring back Michael Scott. The show sucks without him.
I think NBC is bit too reliant on “star power”. Has any of their recent shows star mostly then-unknowns?
Community would be a good example of that (I guess minus Chevy Chase). Although maybe that’s a moot point LOL
Bears.
Beets.
Battlestar Galactica.
That just made my day
I have to say, I and most of the people I know actually prefer it with Ed Helms as the boss. Although he could sometimes be endearing, Michael Scott was far too often just plain mean and obnoxious. I like it with Andy’s sweet efforts and goofiness, and i *love* Robert California, although I do miss Jo!
It takes place on the Shrute farm? Am I the only person who thinks this sounds awful?
Yes.
No he’s not, I think it sounds terrible too.
Um, yes! Schrute Farms is awesome!
Actually, I think the episodes set on Schrute farm have been some of my favorites. However, IMO, Dwight is funniest when he and Jim are interacting. They have great comedic chemistry so I’m not sure if this will work without that.
I am a huge fan of this show but even I think it’s time to move on. It’s not the same without Steve Carrell and new, funny episodes are few and far between. I will give the Dwight spin off a shot because I really like Rainn Wilson. By taking it in a different direction (i.e., family vs workplace), it has a better shot than most spinoffs. That’s why I Cheers/Fraiser worked and why I think “Joey”. It was just “Friends” set in California.
CORRECTION: That’s why I THINK Cheers/Fraiser worked and why I think “Joey” DIDN’T.
I agree that it’s the interaction between Dwight and Jim which are the best. Dwight as a character by himself, or interacting with other characters, just isn’t as interesting. He’s a rather grating character to be the focus of an entire show.
No. You are not. I love Dwight’s character but he isn’t an independent one. It would be too difficult for NBC to make the transition, considering the fact that most of the original Dwight that we know and love practically worshipped Michael and his entire character dynamic fed off of Michael Scott. I would love to see the following characters from the office- obviously Michael Scott, although that’s unreasonable- more realistically, I would really like to see Jim and Dwight forced into some kind of family dynamic or something. Possibly Jim and Dwight could quit over the same thing, and become temporary allies, and Jim and Pam could move into Dwight’s farm together, or something. But, this won’t happen. Sorry NBC, but it’s time to just cut it all off unless you can get Steve Carell back. I loved it while it lasted, but everything’s got to have an ending.
Like Frasier was to Cheers? More like The Tortellis.
There’s a reason the spin-off idea didn’t happen last time. Because it’s an awful, awful idea.
Hmmm, it seems like Dwight Schrute is a cartoonish character who probably works best in an ensemble. And, judging from opinions I’ve heard from friends and seen on places like Deadline, he’s kind of a divisively love-it-or-hate-it proposition. Some people just think Rainn Wilson is annoying. So this spin-off could be an uphill battle with some OFFICE fans.
How sad.
It seems way too late for a spin-off.
Ugh. Dwight is good as a supporting character. He is just way too bizarre to be a main character.
I completely agree! He just doesn’t have enough redeeming qualities to overlook how odd he is.
Looks like NBC really enjoys being in 4th place. As someone stated, Rainn Wilson has no star power. This show, if it ever makes it to air, will last 5 episodes max. Mark my words.
I’d be happy with one more full season, with Dwight leaving at midseason. Without Dwight, I don’t really think the show would be the same next year. The others have become, in some ways, boring, so much so that I haven’t watched this season.
Or are they going for a Fawlty Towers premise with him as the ridiculous B&B operator? Could work.
Dear Joe:
Sure, but…
1. “Chateua Snavely” (1978), starring Harvey Korman and Betty White (Americanized “Fawlty Towers,” Version 1.0.);
2. “Amanda” (1983), starring Bea Arthur (Americanized “Fawlty Towers,” Version 2.0); and,
3. “Payne” (1999), starring John Larroquette (Americanized “Fawlty Towers,” Version 3.0).
(I know, right?)
Seriously, fellow small-screen drones, you have GOT to check out the Bochco Scholars Room at the Paley Center in BH — none of us ever needs to come up with another new idea again! (Did you know that “The Continental” SNL sketch with Christopher Walken was based on a REAL show on CBS in the 50s starring the owner of an L.A.-based ad agency?)
As for the spin-off, we’ll see, of course, but I sort of think that the writer/producer/actors of “The Office” are among the ‘good guys’ and Mr. Wilson is a talented guy (we’ll forgive “The Rocker,” right?), so let’s wish everyone ‘Good Luck!’ and try to avoid the ‘others-must-lose’ mentality until at least the end of Sundance, shall we?
If they can’t get all those big names to come back they should just end it. I still watch but mostly out of loyalty. I’m rewatching season 2 while I workout and it’s shocking how much better it was then.
Season 2 was by far the best! (and we own many of them and love them all). Jim and Pam had the love triangle going on and played it out so perfectly…in stark contrast to Andy/Erin get together in one silly episode *sigh*!
If they wanted a family comedy spinoff, surely Jim and Pam would be the way to go about it?
That’s too much like Up All Night, just with two kids instead of one.
Bad idea.
The whole problem with The Office these days is that Paul Lieberstein is in charge and not Greg Daniels. Lieberstein is running the show into the ground and it’s dying a slow, painful death.
This is getting embarrassing.
Dwight spin-off okay, but why at the farm. The B&B aspect is boring.
I want EP!! More money for me!!
Unless he becomes a supporting character in his own show, I don’t see how this spinoff works.
It’s possible that they incorporate a straight man/lead who is hired as assistant to Dwight but who really keeps things running.
In that manner, it becomes a buddy/family comedy that doesn’t have to rely too heavily on Wilson.
If Parks & Recreations is The Office‘s American Dad (not an official spinoff but shares many ideas), “Dwight” will be its Cleveland Show. At least this doesn’t seem to be another workplace mockumentary.
Wow. Lotta negativity out there. I remember when everyone said that making Parks and Rec and stand alone show (and not part of The Office) was a bad idea…. How soon we forget.
That entire team of writers from The Office remain as some of the most innovative and brilliant minds in comedy. Greg, Paul, Jen, Mike, BJ, Mindy etc Genuises all. Why don’t the haters just shut it and give them a chance. Jeez.
Everyone in MY office loves Rainn! Cant wait to see what weird bizarre funny as fuck direction it’ll go!!!
Why don’t we give it a chance?
Maybe because we’ve watched the last 3 or so terrible seasons of The Office.
why, if it is SO awful, have you watched the show for three years?
If Dwight leaves, then Jim is virtually useless as a straight man. With Jim and Dwight gone, Pam will also be a useless character. Then, I can see Ed Helms jumping off the Titanic and what’s left is a sad wake of a show with Darrel, Kevin, Erin (who’ll be nothing without Andy), and Oscar as the “main” characters.
Seriously, end the show. Dragging it on like this really deteriorates all the good memories of what the show used to be.
It’s already sad enough now that Michael is gone; you lose Jim, Dwight, Andy, Pam and Kelly and you don’t have a TV show — you have a webisode series that no one watches.
Dear “A”:
I’m sorry — do you think that these people are real, somehow?
Troll.
Agreed! Dwight and Jim (especially their pranks and somehow odd friendship) really make the show. I’ve loved Andy as boss this season…and now that’s all dissolving, who wants to watch a show about the supporting characters?
This might work as a recurring mini-series, but not as a full time series. They could make it work by doing six episodes a year and starting them in the middle of April each year.
Dwight is a mean, unlikeable, obnoxious character that only works in small doses and when he has someone like Jim (that we can relate to) to work with. Hope you enjoy your time in eighth place, NBC. You’re sticking around there for awhile longer.
I think that a spin-off with Dwight would be amazingly funny. He is the best character on The Office and he is the best character on television, period. Rainn Wilson is funny as F**K! To say he doesn’t have the star power is crap. If this is true, I am so looking forward to seeing more of Schrute Farms.
