EXCLUSIVE: British actor Tom Weston-Jones (MI5) has landed the lead in Copper, BBC America’s first original scripted series. Franka Potente (Run Lola Run, The Bourne Identity) and Tessa Thompson (For Colored Girls) will co-star in the drama co-created by Tom Fontana and Will Rokos, joining previously cast Anastasia Griffith. It centers on a young Irish cop (Weston-Jones) operating in the immigrant communities of 19th century New York. In her first series regular role, Potente, repped by Gersh and Thruline, will play the
cunning and cutthroat Eva who runs a brothel and has a layered relationship with the cop. Thompson, repped by Greene & Assoc., will play Sara, a doctor’s wife whose brothers were lynched by a group of Irish during riots and will do what she has to do to protect her own. Copper, from Canadian-based Cineflix Studios, is executive produced by Fontana, Rokos, Barry Levinson and Christina Wayne. Weston-Jones recently wrapped the Tandem/Scott Free $44 million eight-hour miniseries World Without End.

Excellent trio of actors and very cool premise. Compare this to US tv shows based on group written YA books and 70′s jiggle shows. The Brits do it better.
THIS is a US TV show, genius. Or, specifically, a US/Canada co-production. BBC America is an American channel owned by BBC Worldwide that has nothing to do with Britain’s BBC channels. And no, the Brits really don’t do anything better than, or even as well as, the better US cable series.
They don’t let their crime drama/procedurals drag on and take up space. Characters on their shows are traditionally given more depth. There are some things that cable can learn from British television.
Sounds cool. The setup reminds me a little bit of BBC Radio’s McLevy series.
Looking forward to seeing this show as it sounds interesting and much better than anything that appears to be offered in the coming year. Also looking forward to seeing Kyle Schmid in this, loved him in Blood Ties and his acting was excellent then. Seems like this will be a perfect vehicle for him to show the world how truly talented he is.
Thats great, really looking forward to seeing more of Tom. He is an amazing rising star.
