I’ve confirmed that Amanda Seyfried is in final negotiations to play Cosette in Les Miserables, joining Hugh Jackman (Jean Valjean), Russell Crowe (Inspector Javert), Anne Hathaway (Fantine) and Eddie Redmayne (Marius) in the Tom Hooper-directed musical for Universal Pictures and Working Title Films. William Nicholson, Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg wrote the script and Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner are producing with Cameron Mackintosh and Debra Hayward. The film will be released December 7, 2012. Innovative Artists-repped Seyfried’s last musical for Universal was Mamma Mia!

Classic story, excellent cast, terrific director and a film that should look and sound wonderful. The question is “Will audiences support it?”
Would not be an investor…too risky.
Well at least they didnt cast Lea Michele. Anyways…I think if the do make it right and keep as many of its wonderful songs as possible, the audience will support it. It is a very popular musical so at least it comes in with a potential built in audience. That being said, I question some of the casting. I wish they could have cast some of the broadway/west end/ect performers who did the roles so incredibly though I never would have expected that to happen.
They were considering Lea Michele for Eponine not Cosette.
Why do people keep casting Anne Hathaway? Girl can not act and she is box office poison. Seyfried is a great choice for Cosette.
Agree with Anne. But Seyfried does not have a strong soprano without heavy vibrato voice to sing these songs
I disagree. Anne Hathaway is no Meryl Streep ( no one is ) , but she has acting & singing talent. I am still a fan of her performances in ” Rachel Getting Married ” & ” Devil Wears Prada. ” Plus, she is wonderful on SNL. And, she received rave reviews for Shakespeare In the Park’s ” Twelfth Night . ” And, I heard Anne’s three hour audition for Les Miserables was incredible.
So right. Anne Hathaway is dreadful. She’s going to ruin Dark Knight Rises.
Really, Fantine’s role in this story is minimal. If Hathaway can manage “I Dreamed a Dream” she’ll have done her job.
I think it will be huge. Great cast. Heard they are also negotiating with Taylor Swift and Sacha Baron Cohen for roles.
The bad news is that they supposse hired Taylor Swift too, and that’s for me just ruined the Movie….
She can’t act even to save her life..and singing? well let’s put this way, maybe the technology could help her in this case too.
She can’t even sing her own songs but it’s Tom Hooper, I mean, the movie was crap from the beginning
Yeah, we all know what a dud The King’s Speech turned out to be, and John Adams was such a disaster. You’re right, how does this guy keep getting jobs? Moron.
Despite the Swift casting, this is a great cast and Seyfried is an ideal choice for Cosette.
Remember when TS “sang” with Stevie Nicks?
You’ll notice that Taylor Swift isn’t mentioned in the post.
At least Seyfried is a classically trained singer… and an experienced actress in both drama and musicals. Casting Taylor Swift as Eponine is a disaster in the making. I can’t begin to think of any less appropriate role for a gawky country western singer who’s not an actress and is taller than most of the actors. She’s going to be working with some real heavyweights… actors at the tops of their games. This role isn’t a beginners apprenticeship.
What on earth were the producers and director thinking? Trying to attract the “young” crowd to this project? They ought to worry more about alienating the core audience. If Taylor is as awkward and wooden as she is on stage, the movie could be ruined. Why wasn’t the very popular Lea Michele cast? She is young, looks the part, has a great voice and can act.
What does her height have to do with anything? Besides that remark I completely agree with you. Taylor Swift is a talented songwriter but singer? She is absolutely horrible! And can she even act at all? I didn’t see Valentine’s Day, was she in anything else? I don’t especially care for Lea Michele’s voice at all but at least she has one! She has also been on Broadway and has played the role of Eponine before. Amanda Seyfried could be alright but I can’t imagine them actually going through with casting Taylor Swift.
I am not a big fan of Lea Michele, but girl can definitely sing AND she kind of has the Eponine-look. Taylor Swift ? God, I hope it is just a rumor…or a bad joke.
Okay. Let’s not pretend Amanda Seyfried is classically-anything. Just because she has taken a few voice lessons does not make her “classically trained.” Listen to her awful, breathy, tremulous singing in Mamma Mia! Do you hear any resemblance in her production to the great “classically-trained” broadway singers (Barbara Cook, Audra McDonald, etc.)? No. This movie is going to be a shit-show, just like Phantom was.
I agree with you on Phantom. Phantom of the Opera and Les Mis are my two favorite musicals and I was so disappointed in Phantom that when I heard a film version of Les Mis was being filmed I was nervous from the beginning. I think Amanda Seyfried could be alright (Can she hit those high notes required for the part of Cosette though?) but I really hope the whole Taylor Swift casting as Eponine is a very cruel joke.
I dont get why Lea Michele isnt in this movie? She acted in this musical on Broadway and has an amazing voice…taylor switft instead? mistake.
Um…Lea Michelle looks too old and is not right for the role at all! Onn stage maybe, not in close up on film….Eponine is a wreck. I don’t think Swift can do a great job either…although i am sure they will make sure she pulls it off…I wish Evan Rachel Wood was doing it, she would be perfect and can out sing both those girls!
Seyfried has a heavy vibratto and is NOT a classically trained singer, what? I call PR bs! Did you see and hear Mama Mia? She did fine, but has an odd lack of control in her upper range a very strong uncontrolled vibratto that does not smack of classical training!!
I hate this casting news, as well as the imminent TSwift news, although I guess anyone is better than Lea Michele.
I guess this also paves the way for Jackie Evancho to play young Cosette.
Taylor Swift? that’s have to be one of the worst casting in the movie history. After this I won’t ever criticized Francis Ford Coppolla for the role of Sofia in The Godfather.
So glad you said this. The moment I read about the possible Swift/Eponine casting, I, too, thought of how Sofia completely destroyed Godfather 4. Eponine is an iconic character. Miscast her, and you topple the house of cards.
The studio wanted Lea Michelle, but wouldn’t agree on a seperate trailer for her nose. Deal breaker.
Well if the cast Taylor Swift then Im out. I adore the musical and could deal with some of their more interesting casting choices, but Taylor Swift for Eponine? Hell to the no… girl can barely sing much less act. Horrid
After hearing about Les Miserables for 25 years, I finally broke down and watched it.
How utterly boring and trivial. Made Andrew Lloyd Webber look like Mozart.
Amen!! I’m still scratching my head over this decision. She can’t sing, she can’t act and they’ve handed her one of the most iconic roles in musical theater history? Really?!? Not to mention that she will now destroy one of the most emotionally powerful and beautiful songs in the entire show – not to mention that its probably the most well known song from Les Miz known to the general public. It’s bad enough that Susan Boyle has somehow taken on some kind of creepy ownership of this song but now we have to listen to Hathaway screach it out with those huge eyes bugging out and that huge goofy smile. Does anyone know if she’s related to the Joker in Batman? There’s a eerie resemblance around the mouth. But I digress. And oh, but let’s not stop there!! Now we have an announcement that we will also be lambasted by the song stylings of Taylor Swift as Eponine. Seriously?? Is this director completely tone deaf?? Swift makes Hathaway sound like a veteran Broadway vocalist. The only audience Taylor Swift will attract to this movie is the millions of poor lost homeless dogs that will no doubt show up scratching at the back of movie theater emergency exits around the country. The only humane thing to do is to convince theater goers to fill their purses and pockets with dog treats to help offset the damage to their poor little ears!! All I can think of is that this production team REALLY doesn’t want anyone to EVER see this movie. Sad for the few talented people they have cast in this film. Idiots.
I agree, it’s so frustrating how they’re going to ruin this movie casting Taylor, And just to think she is going to sing On my own, I can’t even imagine it.
I’m never be so mad for a casting before, because I was really looking forward to see the movie and now I just hate the idea of even watching it .
I just going to imagine that this movie would never existed.
What about Lucy Hale?? She would’ve made a great Eponine… she has the look and I believe she can pull it off… Why did they take her off the table?? I’d take Lea Michele too! Anything is better than Taylor and don’t get me wrong I don’t mind her singing but she doesn’t have the look or the vocal chops to handle such a strong role.
I heard rumors that Jackie Evancho could play young Cosette, She finished a movie with Robert Redford (The Company you Keep) and she looks like a young Amanda Seyfried, But after seeing a video of Jackie doing a duet with Sarah Brightman over a year ago and to think how much Jackie has improved in a year and a half after singing unprofessionally. She may just out sing the rest of the cast.
I hate Jackie evancho to play as young cosette. it should be me!
Dakota Goyo should play as young marius if there is.
