ABC Family has picked up to series half-hour pilot Baby Daddy, created by Dan Berendsen, which the network says is its highest-testing comedy pilot in history. Additionally, ABC Family is re-entering the reality space with new series Beverly Hills Nannies. This is the network’s first unscripted series in 4 years, since America’s Prom Queen, which aired in Spring 2008. ABC Family also has renewed veteran drama The Secret Life of the American Teenager, whose star Shailene Woodley is hot off her starring role in The Descendants, for a fifth season to become the longest-running series ever on ABC Family, hitting the 100-episode mark. In other ABC Family news, Tori Spelling and Tia Mowry have been tapped to star in The Mistle-Tones, the holiday movie which will anchor the network’s next ‘25 Days of Christmas’ event. “This Summer, we’re excited to continue to expand our content across key genres adding another season to our groundbreaking drama, Secret Life, wonderful comedy and a return to reality programming as we continue to innovate with our ABC Family brand,” said ABC Family president Michael Riley. Here are descriptions of ABC Family’s new series and movie:
Baby Daddy, the network’s highest testing comedy pilot ever, stars Chelsea Kane (Dancing with the Stars), Tahj Mowry (The Game) and Derek Theler (90210). From executive producer Dan Berendsen, creator The Nine Lives of Chloe King, the half-hour series is about a young man who becomes a surprise dad to a baby girl when she’s left on his doorstep by an ex-girlfriend. He decides to raise the baby with the help of his mother, his brother Danny (Theler), his best buddy Tucker (Mowry) and his close female friend, Riley (Kane), who is harboring a secret crush on him. Baby Daddy, a multi-camera comedy, will begin production in Spring and will shoot in front of a live audience in Los Angeles.
Beverly Hills Nannies is a docuseries following the lives of a group of nannies working for families in the most exclusive zip code in the country. Evolution Media, the production company known for The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and The Real Housewives of Orange County will produce the series. The series will go into production in Spring.
Tori Spelling (Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood) and Tia Mowry (The Game) have been tapped to star in the new original Christmas movie The Mistle-Tones which will begin principal photography next month in Salt Lake City, Utah. In The Mistle-Tones, Holly (Tia Mowry), blessed with an amazing singing voice, is all set to audition for the newly vacated spot in a legendary local Christmas group which was founded by her late mother years ago. Shocked and upset when the slot goes to the barely talented best friend of the group’s leader, Marci (Tori Spelling), Holly sets out to create her own musical group, The Mistle-Tones. After challenging their rivals to a sing-off on Christmas Eve, Holly finds herself on a journey to the real meaning of Christmas–with some new friends and a new love thrown in for good measure… The Mistle-Tones is executive produced by Maggie Malina (Single Ladies), from a script by Jed Elinoff & Scott Thomas (My Super Psycho Sweet 16), and directed by Paul Hoen (Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam).

What about Jennie Garth’s comedy pilot?
Derek Theler is the most gorgeous man alive. Holy cow they have a star on their hands at ABC FAMILY!
How can you look like that and be FUNNY.
What george11 said … are any of their other pilots still in contention? Or is Baby Daddy the sole pickup?
Baby Daddy tested even higher than Slacker Cats? Whoa.
OMG this nanny idea is going to be so fun to watch. Can’t wait!!!!!!
How much real estate did ABC Fam have available in their schedule? I haven’t seen the filmed product, but I read the the “Intercept” drama pilot and thought it would be a real coup for them – a hit show (not just a hit for them – but a hit across the board) that would pull CW and Fox viewers.
ABC Family has original series blocks on Mondays and Tuesdays. They can rotate shows into those slots — or establish a beachhead on a new night.
ABC Family typically beats CW when they both air new episodes at the same time already.
The press release states that this announcement is “the first portion” of ABC Family’s programming slate. There will be more to come. I do hope that “Intercept” is still in contention. It sounds like a great concept, and you can never go wrong with the talented Danielle Panabaker.
I’m confused. Isn’t ABCFamily programming mostly aimed at young girls? What is a reality show about Beverly Hills nannies saying to the kids in middle America? “Hey look – when you grow up you can be a professional babysitter for spoiled rich kids?” I liken this pick up to Seventeen Magazine putting Paris Hilton on the cover just before her sex tape leaked. KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE.
Young girls are a huge part of the audience, but any female 12-34 is most welcome. This nanny show could work for them. Think of young “millennial” girls/women watching this together and snarking all the Kardashianesque nonsense before them. Or perhaps a 39-year-old mother bonding with her daughter in the same trashy way. And so forth.
ABC Fam is aimed at the Young Girl in all of us – middle age women.
“Hey look, when you grow up no one else is hiring because of this shitty economy, you can have a backup plan as a babysitter and live a better life than the same people your age busting their asses as waitresses to make ends meet.” Get a life cassandra.
Bunheads is still in contention, right?
Dear Cassandra,
I’m guessing the nannies don’t want to only be babysitters for the rest of their lives and will have aspirations of their own. Plus, not all rich kids are spoiled. Don’t be so bitter. It could be fun.
Shailene Woodley isn’t a teenager anymore time to rename the show
The Secret Life of the American Golden Globe Nominee
Melissa Joan Hart had already turned 20 years old when “Sabrina, the Teenage Witch” premiered in 1996 and it went 7 years with that title.
The premise of Baby Daddy makes it sound exactly like Raising Hope.
Im liking the nanny idea. Sounds very interesting to get “in” on the lives of these Beverly Hills families from an outsiders prospective. Cant wait!
This show has to be sub-titled… How else are they going to handle spanish and persian?
Cassandra- I think it’s great that these girls are able to even have jobs in this economy. I have a friend who nannies and she lives the best life ever! She has all of the perks of the wealthy family she works for, has amazing hours, and loves what she does. What’s wrong with that?
Poor Shailene Woodley cannot escape that show.
Yes “justsayin”!your right on…Baby Daddy is”Raising Hope!!! with more talent, wit and a sharper edge…This concept has sadly been floating around forever. Everyone’s pitched this vacant concept a hundred times…Ever see “Three Men and a Baby”??. You executives all can’t be that stupid, can you?
I’ll be watching this nannies show. I’ve been a nanny for a wealthy family before…and I can definitely say that it was extremely interesting. Lots of drama and lots of juicy gossip. This should make for a good show
Somehow I suspect all the people defending the Nanny show on this thread are ABCFam plants – because there’s no way industry people reading Deadline are sitting in their offices thinking “OMG! AMAZING! CAN’T WAIT!”
I look forward to hearing about their Drama pickups, but “3 men and a baby” for TV, and reality gem “the only 5 non-spanish speaking nannies in town (white pretty girls who moved out to LA to be actresses but couldn’t get work so they got nanny jobs)” will be blissfully ignored.
Haha, spot on Mel22. Seriously, enough with the worn out, vacant pregnancy vehicles and opportunist reality crap.
This network has picked up two of the more interesting scripted dramas this season, Bunheads and Intercept, with the former being a proven talent. Give ‘em a chance.
Why no mention of Cameron Deane Stewart who plays Ben, the Baby Daddy? He’s the star and definitely the hottest thing on the show.
“BABY DADDY”?? C’mon ABCF, you can do better than that. Change the title. It’s offensive and tacky. Trust me, don’t start alienating viewers before the premiere.
The Mistle-Tones sounds like an awful variation of the already awful Joyful Noise.
So, highest testing pilot? But you are replacing one of the leads? Sounds like something’s not making sense here.
