Emmy winners Allison Janney and Tony Shalhoub are finalizing deals to star in Greg Daniels’ NBC comedy pilot Friday Night Dinner. The single-camera project, based on the British format, centers on a quirky family that has dinner together every Friday night. Janney will play Barbara and Shalhoub will play Gene, the matriarch and patriarch of the family. On the British series the roles are played by Tamsin Greig and Paul Ritter. Daniels is executive producing the pilot with Howard Klein and the original series’ creator Robert Popper and producer Big Talk TV. The casting brings together Janney, four-time Emmy winner for The West Wing; Shalhoub, 3-time Emmy winner for Monk; and Greg Daniels, five-time Emmy winner for SNL, The Simpsons, King Of The Hill and The Office. WME-repped Janney is coming off an ensemble SAG Award win for The Help. ICM-repped Shalhoub co-stars in the upcoming HBO movie Hemingway & Gellhorn.

Does anybody know if/why they dropped the Jewish aspect of it?
What makes you think they dropped the Jewish aspect of it?
they did, it’s not just a family dinner night, not jews anymore
I hope they did. Tony Shalhoub and Alison Janney have played enough Jews, considering they’re not Jewish. How about Scarlett Johansson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt play Jews in their new movie together instead? Since they’re Jewish in real life, why not?
Gilmore Girls anyone?
I really can’t picture Tony Shalhoub in this.
I think he is a MUCH better choice than David Koechner, who they were originally considering. Those two leads are pretty likable and recognizable.
The role intended for Koechner is not the lead being played by Shalhoub. It’s a supporting role of a neighbor.
Terrific casting!
Anyone who wonders about Mr. Shalhoub being able to pull this off should consider the radical difference in his roles in The Big Night and Galaxy Quest, as well as the role he’s most identified with in Monk.
The man has extraordinary range. I’m sure he’ll be amazing.
This has hit written all over it now. The British version is terrific.
I guess you’re right. I trust Greg Daniels’ judgement anyway. I just really hope they keep the jewish dynamic. Otherwise it’ll just look like Modern Family.
This sounds good. I’m charmed already.
Shalhoub… F*CK! I was looking forward to this.
The chemistry will be good between these two — they were charming as a shy, budding couple in Big Night. That little movie was just perfect in so many ways.
Emily Gilmore should be seeking royalties to be honesy.
sounds great! allison janney was genius in the todd solondz movie last year!
Why do a remake? I’m an English Jew, my wife is an American Jew. We both watched the British version together and my wife nearly wets herself laughing so hard. Most US remakes of BBC comedy shows are disasters.
THIS again. For the final time, here is the answer: most Americans have never heard of the original British, Danish, Israeli or Uzbekistani versions of whatever shows Hollywood wants to remake, so there’s no difference between remakes and “original” ideas (original very much being in quotes).
Why does it matter what the source material is for a show? The studio could have gotten it off a dead hobo in an alley. Here’s a radical thought, how about actually watching the show to see if it’s any good rather than raising irrelevant objection months before it debuts?
IF it ever debuts, that is. Most of the shows people complain about online never even make it to series. What a pity, all that angst, gone to waste…
Relax, scifi_fan. I completely agree with your post. Just remember that most people that make comments here are dumb as sh*t and don’t know their head from their ass when it comes to development or programming. Remember that simple fact and it won’t be so difficult slogging through the bitterness and frustration of assistants who have been on their desk too long or writers who will never get staffed, let alone ever create something that makes it.
I love Tony Shalhoub and I am excited to see him in the show. I love the British version and hope the American version will be just as good. But does anyone know who are going to be playing the 2 sons?
I agree
