After an extensive search that included testing several young actresses for the role, Soul Surfer star AnnaSophia Robb has been cast as young Carrie Bradshaw in the CW drama pilot Carrie Diaries. The project, from Warner Bros TV and Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage’s Fake Empire, is based on Candace Bushnell’s novel, a prequel to her best-seller Sex And The City that was adapted into the iconic HBO series. It chronicles Carrie’s coming of age in the 1980s when she asks her first questions about love, sex, friendship and family while exploring the worlds of high school and Manhattan. Amy Harris (Gossip Girl) wrote the script and is executive producing with Bushnell, Schwartz, Savage and Len Goldstein. The casting marks a homecoming of sorts for Robb, who got her first break on the CW’s predecessor the WB, where she was cast as the lead in the 2004 telefilm An American Girl. Coincidentally, that film was executive produced by Julia Roberts, whose niece, Emma Roberts, was also in contention for the role of Carrie. Robb, repped by CAA and Untitled, segued into a feature career with major roles in such movies as Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, Race To Witch Mountain, The Space Between and most recently the based-on-a-true story Soul Surfer, in which she portrayed the title character, teen surfer Bethany Hamilton, who lost an arm in a shark attack.

This show is on the CW! The show is on the DOA because in my circle the CW stands for “Can’t Win”.
What about The Vampire Diaries??
Uhhhh. . .vampires are OVER. Borderlines are In.
Sounds like quite a witty circle. Dorothy Parker, I presume?
An extensive search that ended up with an actress that looks absolutely nothing like SJP.
Nobody said that the original Carrie (from the books) looked like SJP.
Sarah Jessica Parker wished she looked this attractive when she was a teen.
And don’t let’s forget Road to Terabithia. She was incredibly good in that.
I just hope that the show is up to her talent level…
It’s bridge to terribithia.
What kind of impossible confusion of space and time would “transform” this “toddlers N’ tiaras” poster-elf into Sarah Jessica Parker? Who are they kidding? Find someone with some visual character and skip the Jon Benet section of the extras casting yellow pages. Yuck.
She’s not a fucking child dude. Calm down.
Well CW is notorious for casting actors who never so much as google the words ACTING COACH. So a talented girl like AnnaSophia getting the lead is actually a sign of hope for this pilot. Hopefully these producers and casting directors keep in mind that an iconic cable program like Sex And The City, performed by incredible actresses like Cynthia Nixon, is more than ambitious, especially for the CW. Not to mention, every actor cast in this program will already have huge stilettos to fill.
I blame George Lucas for all the bad prequels.
BUT… knowing CW’S track record for casting, so painful to watch, wanna be performers, like Jessica Stroup, I have very little faith in this pilot.
On the business end, CW knows it will work, and they know it will get viewers. But we all know it will just be another annoying screw up adaptation of a great franchise that should really be left alone in it’s splendor.
This show is just a bad idea all round. SATC has been bled and trying to go all prequel on it on network just isn’t going to work.
Someone this young and pretty would never be forced to develop a biting, even caustic intellectual view on failed relationships because she’s going to have guys falling all over get since 6th grade. SJP played the insecure romantic to a T and her imperfect features made her relatable to women who could easily put themselves in her shoes.
Who is going to relate to this girl, home-coming queens?
Folks need to realize that this show is NOT meant to appeal to SATC fans and is going for a MUCH younger demo. Their casting for the character and not a SJP mini-me but you can expect hair/style to still be big factors.
I’ll bet it’s going to be a hit for the CW.
1980s hair? 1980s style? Those will be big factors? “For the MUCH younger demo”? Really?
Crazy. It’s a bad idea that will look stupider once they actually film it. Break out the leg warmers and big shoulder pads. This one pilot we can safely say will never go to series.
Just because you know nothing about this project–I.e., have you read the books? Read the pilot script? Know anything about the 80′s? Doesn’t mean you know a thing about this project. Do you actually have any firm facts about anything? Power tools? Medical gauze? The number of calories in a large portion of MacDonald’s French fries? When you can produce some actual facts about anything, perhaps we will listen to you. Until then, tail between the legs . . .
Yeah, JJ is a complete idiot. Glad you told that fool off. “NOT for SATC fans” and “MUCH younger demo”… but set in the 1980s. HAHAHAHAHAHA. What an idiot. This pilot is already dead.
How can Carrie Bradshaw explore high school in Manhattan when she clearly says in the original series that she moved to NYC in her early 20′s? Sorry I haven’t read the “Carrie Diaries” and I never will, but as a fan of the series, this detail is kind of annoying to overlook.
The book focuses on Carrie’s final years of highschool in a suburb several hours away from New York City. I always assumed that if this series is successful enough to run 5 years that the initial 1.5 seasons would take place in that suburb with moving to the city afterwards and introducing a “new” character (Charlotte, Miranada, Samantha) every year or so.
She still lives in the suburbs. Her father and guidance counselor decide to let Carrie work at an internship in the city after her mother dies. I imagine that would inspire her to then move to the city in her 20s. Have you read the pilot?
She’ll never t be Carrie Bradshaw without Michael Patrick King’s gift for shitty, shitty puns.
I laughed at this.
Awww, Michael’s better than that. Naughty SuperFan!
I gather that what they need here is someone who looks like Sarah Jessica Parker as a teenager, and the show is set in something like 1984. Hmmmmmm. Maybe they should just air reruns of Square Pegs.
So this show is set in the 1980s? I don’t think young girls today want to watch a show set in the high school of decades ago. What a weird premise. Added to that, the new generation of today were in 4th grade when SATC was on, so the whole event passed them by. Why would the CW expect any sort of emotional resonance from the generation who never watched the show and were watching cartoons at the time SATC was airing?
I agree about the ’80s part of your argument, but this is just another opportunity to put an attractive cast of young actors in New York and have them go to parties each week. Essentially, Gossip Girl is worn out and they need a replacement.
& just like that, another successful franchise is milked to death & destroyed.
Because SATC2 didn’t do that already?
Wow – they might have well have cast Taylor momsen. Didn’t they try the 80s with the short lived gossip girl prequel?
I always assumed that “Square Pegs” was the prequel to “Sex and the City.”
This show sounds great! The actress has to look like Carrie Bradshaw, not Sarah Jessica Parker. It is based on the book, not the show. In the book, she lives with her dad and has two younger sisters. On the show, Sex and the City, they do a whole episode about how she never knew her dad. They are totally different. It will appeal to teens though in the way “The Wonder Years” appealed to me when I was in middle school. Any one who has anything negative to say should just READ THE BOOKS!
AnnaSophia is lowering her standards. CW shows suck and she is an amazing actress.
Congratulations AnnaSophia conceguir in the paper on Sex and the city, and goes with everything because you have a bright future and this is their only comesso carrera.
AnnaSophia Robb:
I wish you all the luck in the world for this new project…
I believe the show could have potential to be a hit. There is things that need to be put into account to stick to the the hit show SATC and draw the fans in. It can have potential to draw the young crowd in because look at The 70s Show it was set in the 70s and did great so I don’t see why the 80s wouldn’t. But most viewers are gonna be fans and in my opinion it will be a flop if they don’t cast a person that looks like Carrie or acts like her and better yet stick to the books story line to a T.
Bridge to Terabithia 2nd favorite movie after Journey 2
This is a bit unsettling. I was hoping AnnaSophia would stay classy, creative, and true to her morals. I have a feeling this show is going to be trashy and ruin Anna’s image. Nothing good is going to come out of the Carrie Diaries.
