Anthony LaPaglia, who had 3 pilots at 3 networks vying for his services, has closed a deal to topline the ABC drama pilot Americana, a soap about a famous fashion industry clan. It centers on iconic fashion designer Robert Soulter (LaPaglia), the patriarch of a sprawling family who just welcomed a new member, a young designer whose shocking arrival turns the family and the legendary label inside out. Michael Seitzman wrote the script, with Phillip Noyce, who helmed the pilot for ABC’s Revenge last year, directing. Seitzman, Mark Gordon and Nicholas Pepper executive produce for ABC Studios and the Mark Gordon Co. This marks the return to television and the first TV role for LaPaglia since his starring turn on the popular CBS crime drama Without A Trace, which earned him a Golden Globe Award. The Aussie actor, repped by CAA and Industry Entertainment, is currently filming Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained.

Are you allowed to say what the other 2 pilots that were vying for him were?
Love Anthony …exited to see him in Anthony. Silla miss WAT… His character was so complex and interesting. Great cast
So excited about this. Will keep my fingers crossed that the pilot will be so good, the executives will have to pick it up for ABC. I’ve missed Anthony LaPaglia on TV.
I WANT THIS SHOW ON MY TV! Anthony LaPaglia has been gone too long.
Great to see him pick a pilot to be on. Great actor, wish him all the best with this new project of his.
Michael Seitzman is such a lousy writer. He’s so lucky to have Mark Gordon pushing him through. If this goes he’ll need a super strong show runner. The guy is a regular Jack Orman.
He’s an Aussie. This makes perfect sense.
YAY!! I Cannot wait until this pilot comes out. And, I wish the pilot gets picked up because Anthony Lapaglia is an amazing actor and deserves to be on our television screens.
Met Anthony once during his fourth season of “Without A Trace”. Asked him how many episodes of his show did he think were actually any good. He had filmed 60+ eps. He thought about it and then said, “2″. He was a headcase, and the writers ended up giving him very little responsibility toward the end of the show’s run. I’m not saying he doesn’t deserve another show. I’m saying I hope his attitude and egomania get checked at the door for this interesting pilot.
So you actually asked him which episodes were actually any good, and you think he was serious when he said “Two”? Get a grip, truthie -what stupid question to ask any actor. I’ve met him a couple of times and had some good chats; he came across as being very intelligent, having a wicked sense of humor (which you don’t get, obviously) and very humble. I would also disagree about the writers giving him very little responsibility towards the end -he wrote a very good episode in S5 and came up with a storyline for a S7 episode -usually it’s more the egotistical actors who demand directing episodes, but not him, and writing is not easy. His character Jack Malone was featured more than some would like throughout the show’s run, but then he was the star -and towards the end they didn’t shunt his character sideways if he was being so irresponsible. He offered to take a substantial paycut to keep the show and crew going when it was threatened with cancellation, and he was unhappy when it was -doesn’t sound like an irresponsible guy to me. From the above article it says he had three pilots from three networks wanting him, so Hollywood would disagree with you. Headcases don’t get work. And yes, all actors have egos, just some have more than others, and I don’t think Anthony is one of them. He’s just a motorcycle loving, soccer-tragic family man.
