Argentine moviegoers are seeing Margaret Thatcher from a different, perhaps more sympathetic perspective after “The Iron Lady” opened Thursday in Buenos Aires, according to Reuters. Thatcher was reviled among Argentines for her role in the 1982 war with Britain over the Falkland Islands. Argentine opposition lawmaker Gabriela Michetti said the film humanizes Thatcher. “You can see her youth, how much she fought against obstacles in a man’s world and as a grocer’s daughter … It’s the first time I see her this way.” Ernesto Alonso as a young conscript fought in Las Malvinas, as the Falklands are known in Spanish. “She was the harshest symbol of the policies of the empire,” Alonso said. “It’s important to see the war through a movie and see what kind of legacy this kind of character leaves behind.”
Seeing Meryl Streep playing Thatcher as an old woman in decline saddened Alicia Fischer, a retired chemical industry worker. “You have to put yourself in her shoes,” Fischer said. “She did what she had to do for her country … It’s not easy to be a stateswoman in a country like Britain.” Coincidentally, as the 30th anniversary of the conflict approaches, Britain’s Prince William has landed in the Falklands for a tour of duty as a search-and-rescue pilot. Oil exploration in the Falklands has also elevated tensions in recent months, and Britain’s deployment of a warship hasn’t helped.

Reviled for what? Fighting back against an invasion by a fascist junta? You’d think the more democratically minded Argentines would thank Maggie for mortally wounding Galtieri and hastening the end of dictatorship. Anyway, “Lady” barely touches the substance of Thatcher’s political career, preferring to obsess bizarrely over her dementia. (At least when she was compos mentis, she could fight back.)
Ain’t you tired, Dan? Ain’t you tired?
Great comment! (OK now I’m tired.)
It’s one of those ironic historical developments (like there are any other kind) that the arrogant actions of the colonial power actually resulted in a better government for Argentina. Still, Great Britain has no business staying in the Malvinas.
Thatcher deserves to face the International Criminal Court. Her and her buddy Kissinger. Frankly, I have no interest for a film that portray a “sympathetic” side to a horrible person like she is.
Even though I think a good filmmaker must be impartial in his/her portrayal of a historical figure.
It would be nice if they recut it for the Argentines. Ane by the Argentines, I mean everyone. This was a moving picture more than a movie. It was neither avante garde nor a decent modern movie. But sure, Meryl was great in it in just about every boring scene.
What Reuters doesn´t tell is that Gabriela Michetti belongs to a conservative right wing party. She doesn´t reflects the general argentinian understanding that Falklands are not part of the UK – specially since last weeks Prince Williams tour of duty.
I agree with you Heinz. I’m argentinian and I loved Meryl’s performance though I found the movie boring and trying to appeal to masses that disliked her becuase when I left the theatre yesterday afternoon, everyone was tearing up and emotional over the life of a fierce woman that is what the movie is showing but Michetti forgot to mention that she belongs to a very small percentage of the country who were the same people that help to bring down the democatric goverment of the era in order to bring dictators as heads of the state, and argentinians are ery disspleasedwith Prince Williams’ arrival in the Falklands and have attempted against the UK embassy in Argentina.
If Margaret Tacher won The Malvinas war, is becouse USA guided her and told her all about the Argentina The Malvinas allways are Argentinas !!!
I’ve nothing against Deadline’s authors slipping in political comments but do try to get the facts right. Leaving aside the rights and wrongs of colonial history, and Argentina’s claims to the Falkland Islands are as legitimates as Mexico’s to Texas and California would be today, except the Falklands were British before there even was an Argentina and 1,185 miles away anyway, Prince William is a serving member of the British armed forced and goes where he is posted. Britain’s deployment of a warship to protect British citizens in a part of the United Kingdom is in response to the Argentinean government again making aggressive noises.
Mexico signed, under pressure but they did, a peace treaty with the USofAm accepting the carving out of Mexican land by an aggression that, by the way, was denounced at the moment it took place by no other than Abraham Linconl. Argentina never signed any such agreement with the violent invaders of 1833, who ejected 500 Argetinean residents and did not allow them to exert any “right to self-determination”. On the contrary, Arg population fought against the British invaders during the winter, spring and summer (Southern) of 1833 and 1834. The film is simply an attempt to mollify Ms. Thatcher´s blood drenched record in order to prepare the public consciousness in Britain for a renewed “Iron Person” who puts order in the current mess. Michetti, by the way, is not just conservative. She is what in the USofAm is known as a Quisling. A pro-British Quisling. Her declarations to Reuters are as valid as that of Quisling to the Nazi Press Agencies.
