IM Global will take to Berlin The Happytime Murders, directed by Brian Henson (A Muppets Christmas Carol) and penned by Todd Berger (Kung Fu Panda 2) from a story he wrote with Dee Austin Robertson. It takes place in a world where puppets and humans live together, but the puppets are viewed as second-class citizens. When the puppet cast of an 1980s kids TV show gets murdered one by one, a disgraced detective-turned-private eye puppet takes on the case. Katherine Heigl is in advanced negotiations to star. IM Global is selling the pic through its Opus label next week at the European Film Market.

I am a callous, jealous, wannabe writer fuckhead, and I generally have nothing positive to say on any deadline comment forum. Having stated that, Berger is really great and this is a terrifically funny script. It’s a shame that Katherine Heigl is doing this project, I still have high hopes for it though.
Um, isn’t this the exact same story as “Who Framed Roger Rabbit”?
This was a fun script, but it’s an R-rated Roger Rabbit-meets-Meet the Feebles. Call me dumb, but I don’t understand the audience for this one.
Did the script seem expensive?
This sounds hilarious and quirky. Love Heigl and am looking forward to seeing her in something other than a rom-com!
Is Katherine Heigl playing Jessica Rabbit?
There is a 4-minute test scene that Brian Henson shot for this – that is awesome. Withhold judgment until that scene gets online somewhere . . .
that 4 minutes is never getting on line, and it’s awesome!
Read the script while it sat ungreenlit at Lionsgate. So many people there were hot for it, but the corner office/fifth floor higherups were favoring certain production teams over others.
Personally, I didnt really get it. Thought a bunch of crass, vulgar puppets would be a longshot as a feature film. This isnt Roger Rabbit. Its Roger Rabbit to the nth degree. But what do I know.
And now with Kiss of Death Katherine… I’m sure lots of people in those corridors on Colorado are happy someone else has it, but crushed it still slipped away, and fallen victim to KH.
Ironically, will it end up back at Lionsgate? Lionsgate has a few projects with IM Global, including the upcoming Statham film. I feel bad for the exec who championed this one at LG. To have it slip away only to boomerang back with Heigl attached is saddening.
If this script was even half-decent, Lionsgate wouldn’t have let it go. I’m sure they knew about Katherine Heigl and still chose not to be a part of it. This project sounds like Direct-to-DVD to me.
