EXCLUSIVE: I’ve learned that BET has given a pilot order to Single Black Female, an hourlong project from Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil, the husband-and-wife duo behind the cable network’s hit comedy series The Game. The Game creator/executive producer Brock Akil wrote the project, which chronicles the work and family life of a Black woman who is the host of a popular Atlanta-based talk show host in the vein of The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Single Black Female falls under the mega production pact the Mara Brock Akil and The Game director Salim Akil signed with BET in May, which includes a series and several pilot commitments. Mara Brock Akil recently wrote the feature Sparkle, which was directed by Salim Akil. The film, slated for an August release, stars Whitney Houston in her final role. Salim Akil also recently directed the hit urban comedy Jumping the Broom.

How about a single black female that’s not a stereotype — not gonna happen on BET. That’s all they push.
I’m conflicted. She used to create quality black-themed content, but since reviving the Game, has turned it into a salacious cluster-f*ck. All melodrama, character assassination, and stereotypical behavior. To what end?
Urban comedy…Jumping the Broom??? Please tell me what’s “urban” about Jumping the Broom?! …because it features Black characters?
Jumping the Broom is a romantic comedy. Period. If you want to further detail you can mention that it is a romantic comedy that opened at #1! #stopbeinglazy #tiredofbeingmarginalized
How is that people can used a broad comedy (which broke ALL viewership records – black or white, btw) about football players and their ridiculous exploits as an example of what should be a vehicle for “positive” black characters. it’s just a comedy. black people need to get over themselves and allow themselves to be more than just monolithic tyler perry-esque characters who can only act, dress, or portray themselves in certain ways in order to reach “positive” status with it’s demographic. how about you look, laugh, and applaud the project for what it is???
Great for Mara and Salim. Two very nice people who are the epitome of a power couple. Congrats!!!
I’m all for writing what you know but can we maybe beat a different dead horse?
And co-sign Doesn’t Matter, “urban” is lazy codespeak for black and despite what others may think there is no singular, all-encompassing definition of the black experience.
Btw, having black people involved doesn’t make something exclusively, universally black, be it a movie, a novel or a cooking show. Like how we have a black president but America would never be described as a black, excuse me, “urban” country.
Congrats to Mara and Salim. Looking forward to seeing what they come up with next. Its refreshing to see an african american couple who both have an incredible work ethic and still manage to be quality people to those who work for and with them.
Don’t hate on the Akill’s. Let’s get down to the real story. Why was it easier to get minority driven shows on Network TV 25 years ago then it is now?! It is a very sad state of affairs in Netwrok TV there are people of color who have any real legitimate TV juice. Don’t start talking about “well Tyler Perry’s has shows…and he’s so rich..blah blah blah..He is on TBS which stands for Total Bull S&;@!
This is the era for single black females to wake up and move with the transition. I am proud to see African-Americans step up to the plate and support the single black female. Support is needed in every angle for any individual to strengthen a weak spot. Single Black Female its time to open-mind+open+Heart= love, movements, growth, happiness. Take charge to strenthen the mind and apply to live, and enjoy life on every positive angle. BridgettArtis read, develop, spirit, happiness.
