EXCLUSIVE: Brie Larson has nabbed the female lead opposite Michael Angarano in CBS’ single-camera comedy pilot from feature writer-director Nick Stoller (The Muppets). Stoller wrote and will direct the untitled project, a twentysomething ensemble comedy that centers on Jake (Angarano), a commitment-phobic ad agency exec who, after getting dumped by his longtime girlfriend Laura (Larson), realizes he has to continue working with her one cubicle away. Chernin Entertainment and 20th Century Fox TV are producing. Larson, repped by Gersh and ROAR, co-starred on Showtime’s dark comedy United States Of Tara and will next be seen in the 21 Jump Street feature reboot.

What a super talent. She was the BEST thing about UNITED STATES OF TARA, and if this show is as good as I hope it is, it could really revolutionize CBS’ rep.
Not really sure why CBS would want to revolutionize its rep – I would rather see them make a comedy that’s like their other shows, but really good, like The Good Wife is a better version of their regular dramas. So I don’t really understand them doing this as a single-camera show, given that single-cams don’t fit on their lineup. They should have told Stoller to do what he does, but in front of an audience. That method’s produced some of the better comedies.
While their shows do well, I think it only makes sense for them to venture into single camera comedy territory. The numbers might be good, but the next generation (and very coveted demographic) for the most part find it a dated format -I know I do. A talent like Brie Larson, who has a very cinematic quality to her acting, isn’t suited for that canned laughter, multi cam format. I believe this is a very conscious effort by CBS to move in that direction.
I don’t think the next generation finds multi-cam a dated format, not if you note the ratings for Big Bang Theory and iCarly and so on. I think _Hollywood_ finds it a dated format, but they then assume that the world out there feels the same way, and it’s just not the case. Anyway single-cam comedy is older than multi-cam comedy, a more modern and innovative format (and harder to do well).
She’s great.
I love Brie Larson, such a talent, directed her on numerous things. she is the best, great things ahead for her.
Great casting! Can’t wait to see Brie in this role.
