A new man will be threatening Nucky Thompson’s reign on the upcoming third season of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire. Bobby Cannavale has joined the cast of the mob drama as a series regular. He will play Gyp Rosetti, a charming but ruthless gangster who challenges Nucky (Steve Buscemi). The cast of Boardwalk Empire, created by Terence Winter and executive produced by Winter, Martin Scorsese, Tim Van Patten, Mark Wahlberg and Stephen Levinson, is a regular short following the demise of Michael Pitt’s character in the second season finale. The series repeated as a double SAG Award winner this past weekend in the best drama ensemble and best actor (Buscemi) categories. Cannavale, Emmy-winner for his recurring role on Will & Grace, recently completed a ten-episode arc on Nurse Jackie and wrapped production on the feature Lovelace. The actor, repped by ICM and Framework, starred alongside Chris Rock on Broadway last year in The Motherf**er With The Hat.

Still too pissed off to watch this show.
I know…I was still mad when Buscemi got up on that stage during the SAG awards…however, this made things a *LOT* better.
I agree. I cancelled my HBO.. Jimmy was the nucleus. I promise u no way in the world another character will get as much praise as Jimmy. To the honest,I dont think people will be inclined on another character
gangsters die young, get over it u sad fuckers
I agree. Too soon, too soon.
Guess i’ll have to watch now. damn, there are just too many cable shows to watch. Network TV, not so much.
Bobby Cannavale is a gift actor but it will be tough to replace as nuanced a character as Jimmy. Just another thug giving Nucky a run for his money is pretty pedestrian. Hope they find a way to make Cannavale more than a 1920s goombah.
What, the writers were good enough to make you care about Jimmy and react emotionally over his death, but you think they’re just going to make some bland one-dimensional character with Cannavale?
I really don’t know if I can watch anymore. Killing Jimmy really pissed me off. There was a lot more to explore with him. He was cut short. Should’ve gone into exile, survival instinct kicks in knowing Nucky is gonna waste him — boom he splits. That character for me became the heart of the show.
I agree. At first it was Nucky but Jimmy won my heart! I’ll test the waters but not commit!
hard to believe that Jimmy was the heart of the show for you – he was far from being the focus of the show and he turned against Nucky hard time – what did you think would happen to him? It was also a great way of showing how his youth and naivety ultimately did him in. I thought it fit perfectly into the storyline – however I do agree that it was hard to watch him leave in such a dramatic way!
Nucky is full of lies and deciet though… yes Jimmy turned against him but Nucky is hardly a pinnacle of goodness now is he?
It’s a shame that you are too busy posting on blogs to go tell Martin Scorsese how to do his job. I’m sure he’d really benefit from your expertise.
I think there was a behind the scenes reason for getting rid of Jimmty.
One of MY favorite group of actors in the show are the NY contingent:
Michael Stulbarg “Arnold Rothstein”
Anatol Yusef “Meyer Lansky” &
Vincent Piazza “Lucky Lucciano.”
Why don’t the writers just give these fascinating series regulars MORE to do & not keep adding more characters to the (already stuffed) proceedings?
Because people already know thier story and it’s interesting to have characters that are fictional too. I am looking forward to all the new fictional characters…Bud Matheson, Cannavale’s character, Ivy Wells ect. But also love all the real gangsters. You need both.
Michael Pitt was hard to work with and got fired.
Boardwalk’s a mess.
Bobby coming to Boardwalk is a great move. From all accounts from the set, Pitt was a nightmare to deal with.
Long live Jimmy. This show is ruined now.
Jimmy was a captivating character but it’s the writers that made him. I’m anxious to see what they’ll do now. The bar is high.
If he was captivating and the writers made him, what do you think is the juice behind the others?
When does Season 3 start? And, will you show the end of Season 2 episode before going to Season 3?
Hard to believe people are (still) bemoaning Jimmy’s demise. The show is about gansgters. In a culture of guns, knives, and low IQ’s (people such as Arnold Rothstein notwithstanding), people have been killed for next to nothing. There is the risk of dying violently every day, if that is the life you lead. While I am lucky to say I have no insight whatsoever into any criminal culture, Jimmy’s death was a very plausible outcome of his tortured relationship with Nucky, and much less shocking (creatively) than Tony Soprano murdering Christopher Moltisanti. Would like to see much less concentration on Margaret though. Personally, I do not think they’ve done especially well with her character arc.
I really agree with you Jake and I think everyone is anyway taking this much too personal, Just a show people! If there is a reason why I might stop watching it, it would be because I found this series to be a lot more violent and, as someone who has morals, as most of us do, very very immoral. The whole mother son relationship going on there made me feel sick and I think that was a little over board for the production to allow. It didn’t have to actually happen did it? Jimmy never even had a chance with where and what he came from unless he died or ran very very far away for good! Margret gets on my nerves too! Another thing…I really like to like at least one character in a show, like/empathize/sympathize if I don’t it’s a problem. I liked Jimmy until his betrayal, I liked Nucky now I just don’t. He’s full of crap!
How is the show ruined by killing off a character?? Is Game of Thrones ruined by the death of not 1 but 2 of their main characters? No, because they have plenty more left who are just as interesting. Apples to oranges? Maybe. But still applicable. Give it a chance at least…
I am a rabid fan of Boardwalk. People boo-hooing over Jimmy’s death and excalaiming to the heavens, “This is all RUINED now” are horribly short-sighted. All the characters in this wonderful show bring depth. Are we forgetting Van Alden? Chalky White? Richard freakin’ Harlowe? This show doesn’t have just one shining star. To piss and moan over a character’s (an admittedly wonderful character) death proves people have short attention spans and care little for great writing and ensemble acting.
FFS, Jimmy’s demise was inevitable (In fairess, how can you have any sympathy for anybody who f**ks their own mother and also betrays the only father figure he has ever had?, also where else could they possibly go with the character???).
Get over yourselves, you stupid f**ks. The show will, and always has been, bigger than any individual character. Long may it continue…
When does the 3rd season start?
STILL dealing with the loss of Jimmy Dormady! Killing him made no sense whatsoever and took the heart right out of the show. While every part of the series is wonderful, Michael Pitt brought something so complex and focused that you simply couldn’t wait to see what he would do next. Even though it is supposed to be Nucky’s story, it was really Jimmy’s. Was that why he had to be killed off? Too potent a protagonist? I suspect the series will still be good, but, honestly, not nearly as good as it might have been if the character of Jimmy had been allowed to develop further.
I will never watch this show again. I think the directors lost sight of how much people were looking forward to seeing Jimi in The third season. I. Have lost faith in the whole show
I still dont beleive Jimmy’s death was real. It was way too cinematic, and I just dont think Nucky would have killed him at point blank range in the face in front of the WW1 war Memorial.
I’m still bemoaning the death of The Commodore… WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYY??? He brought so much depth and vision to the show. Without him, the show is ruined… RUINED!!! /dramaqueen
People need to keep in mind that this show is based on historical fact. While they can invent characters they cannot alter the general facts of the era. The fact is that an Irishmen like Darmody had a target on his back. The Italians were taking over NYC and New Jersey during the 20′s. Jimmy had no future historically speaking.
The addition of Cannavale as an Italian(He is actually Hispanic) confirms the direction that the show is going in. I would not be surprised to see Nucky get whacked at the end of the show’s run by Luciano. It would dovetail perfectly with what Luciano actually did.
no one can replace Jimmy if this is what they are thinking
Every character in BE (and any other well-written show) is nuanced and has more depth than revealed, that’s what makes the characters plausible. Once every possible background story is explained, the character is finished; we never experience that in life, so why would it be plausible in fiction? Indeed we hardly knew Jimmy, we didn’t get to see what kind of a father figure Nucky was to him before the war, etc. etc. All that remained implicit and unspoken about Darmody makes that lump in the throat you get more real. So I commend the writers because they aren’t crowd-pleasers, and see that this show means more than its audience. I am sad to see Darmody and a talented actor like Michael Pitt go, but I hope this show continues to prefer verisimilitude over sentimentality or gratification.
Really? Too bad. The story arc did make sense though. A brave move. I applaud boardwalk for having the guts to do it.
I meant ” really ” as in was Michael Pitt really hard to work with.
