EXCLUSIVE: Branko Lustig and Daniela Cretu have launched a new film production company. First Born Films gets off the ground with The Godmother, the true story of Griselda Blanco, who is also known as “The Godmother of Cocaine” and “Black Widow,” who became the first and only woman in history to head a major Colombian drug network. Lustig and Cretu have made a life rights deal with Blanco and her family, and also her youngest son Michael Corleone (named from The Godfather character) for a film that chronicles the rise and fall of the woman who became the wealthiest, deadliest, most notorious and most wanted drug lord in the world. Her exploits were chronicled in the documentary Cocaine Cowboys 2.
Frank Baldwin is writing the script, and Goodfellas author Nicholas Pileggi will produce with Lustig and Cretu. They are aiming for a fall start and are currently scouting shooting locations and will be traveling to Colombia, The Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Miami, Florida this month to evaluate shooting options.
Lustig has won two Best Picture Oscars, for Gladiator and Schindler’s List. As for Blanco, she came to prominence in the 1970s and 1980s, fueling the Miami drug wars to bolster her position as the only woman to ever make it to the top echelon of drug cartel society. Blanco grossed millions of dollars a month amidst fierce competition as cocaine replaced marijuana as the country’s drug of choice. She built the city of Miami with drugs, blood and money. Some of it she herself spilled, and had assassins execute many of her rivals. Blanco was eventually arrested and convicted in 1986 in Los Angeles. Sentenced to execution, she ended up serving 18 years in prison before she was released in 2004 and deported back to Colombia. While just about every drug kingpin of that era is dead or behind bars, she lives freely in Colombia.
First Born Films will be based in LA, developing higher budgeted independent films meant for a broad audience.

Shouldn’t Hollywood feel at least a twinge of guilt at allowing a cold blooded murderer to profit from her past like this?
Good question. As a public figure they could have used interviews and public records to create the story without handing money over to a drug dealer and murderer.
“Lustig and Cretu have made a life rights deal with Blanco and her family,” The woman ordered the murder of children as little as 2 yrs old and is responsible for over 200 deaths THAT THEY KNOW OF. And they had to make a life rights deal? This woman deserves the needle and thats it.
This sounds like an interesting project, but who is Daniela Cretu?
should we just call it a day and announce it’s gonna star JLo?
This has the makings of a good film (see Cocaine Cowboys 2). If Pileggi is producing you can bet on it.
I think Roseanne Barr would do this justice.
Griselda Blanco, the Godmother of cocaine was a major player in the drug business long before Pablo Escobar came onto the scene. She was a teen prostitute and murdered her first victim at a very young age. The Godmother rose from the shantytown slums of Medellin by using extreme violence and is the author of the famous “sicarios” in Medellin, were hitmen ride motorcycles to kill their targets. Anyone interested in learning more about her hometown and the violent history of Medellin can book a trip with Medellin Colombia Tours and check out the popular Pablo Escobar tour has been attracting visitors from around the globe to discover the transformation of Colombia. I, personally, can’t wait for the premiere of The Godmother.
I read an article regarding Griselda Blanco and her son recently in a Miami newspaper. Seems the claim of her being a teenage prostitute is discredited by a representative of Griselda Blanco,as well as the claim regarding the attempted kidnapping of JFK Jr. From what I read, the reporter was able to confirm this and also discredit Cocaine Cowboys 2 as nothing more than a fairy tale with some obvious facts. I would love to see how this movie will portray her and I really hope that they will not make it all “Hollywood” and just stick with the facts. I will admit that with Branko Lustig (Schindler’s List, Gladiator, American Gangster) and Nicholas Pileggi (Good Fellas, Casino) this movie should be epic.
I agree…the story is there and with these producers you know it will be epic. This is a dream role for any actress, and you know someone like Ridley Scott or Martin Scorsese will direct.
