EXCLUSIVE: FlashForward alum Brían F. O’Byrne is back at ABC with a starring role in the drama pilot Gilded Lilys. The project, written/exec produced by KJ Steinberg and executive produced by Shonda Rhimes, is set in 1895 and described as an epic love story, a vicious rivalry and a scandalous secret unfolded against the backdrop of the opening of New York’s first luxury hotel. It centers on wealthy blue-blood Edwin Lily (O’Byrne), a heavy hitter in New York society who, reeling from a recent family scandal, tries to revive his family’s fortunes by opening the most lavish hotel in history. Complicating things is the fact that Edwin’s beautiful daughter Violet (Sarah Bolger), engaged to be married to a wealthy family friend, has fallen madly in love with a lowly ship’s servant. Irish-born O’Byrne, repped by Gersh, received an Emmy nomination last year for his role in the HBO miniseries Mildred Pierce. His series credits include Brotherhood and, most recently, NBC’s Prime Suspect.

Such a great actor. He was the best thing about Prime Suspect.
No Maria Bello was by far the best thing, this guy is good, but he’s jumped into a costume soap drama, I wonder if he even knows!
I wonder if you have anything better to do with your time then to hate on a pilot that hasn’t even been filmed yet….
Now I’m starting to get interested…
I’m sure he can read. And as for Soap…he was just in Mildred Pierce.
I hope ABC changes the name if this goes to series. Gilded Lilys sounds ridiculous.
I agree. I’d be happy with a simple “The Lilys.”
Let me guess: You don’t understand the title, do you? The series is taking place in 1895, at the end of what is known as America’s “Gilded Age,” the family at the center of the show is the Lily family, and there is a common expression, “gilding the lily,” meaning “to over embellish,” something that might a theme of the series given that the upper class people of the time put high importance on creating perfect appearances. So, basically, the perfect title for the series. The problem is the average American is not well-enough educated to be anything but confused by it. This is why US network Tv should just stick to making reality shows about people eating bugs to win money.
How pompous of you. The title is obvious and still not a good one.
I wonder if this show would even exist if there were no Downton Abbey.
I understood all three of those meanings and I still think the title sucks.
Thank God, someone on this site actually reads and makes use of an education that moves beyond twitter and sound bites.
He was also good in INTERMISSION.
Good actor!
Downtown Abbey for Americans.
my thought exactly – you beat me to it
You were all beaten to it in the last update for this pilot.
He was great in Brotherhood. Who remembers Flash Forward?
I like the title, it has several meanings.
Fantastic actor. Really enjoyed him on Prime Suspect.
It’s getting greenlit because of Downton Abbey, but so what? TV is all about imitation. I’m just happy to see something that isn’t Yet Another Cop Show.
