EXCLUSIVE: Ed Zwick is out and Jeffrey Nachmanoff is in as director of American Assassin, the adaptation of the Vince Flynn novel that CBS Films hopes will launch a film franchise based on CIA agent Mitch Rapp. Zwick came aboard last summer after CBS Films, which bought rights to Flynn’s novels several years ago, refocused its attention on American Assassin. While that is the 11th book in the series, it was a prequel that explained how tragedy transformed the protagonist from a college scholar and athlete into a ruthless hunter of terrorists for the CIA.
Nachmanoff previously directed the Don Cheadle espionage thriller Traitor, and co-wrote The Day After Tomorrow with Roland Emmerich. Nachmanoff most recently directed the Dick Wolf-produced NBC pilot Chicago Fire. Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz wrote the most recent draft of the script but exited because Zwick is directing The Great Wall possibly with Henry Cavill, and CBS Films didn’t want to wait.
CBS Films first acquired rights to Flynn’s popular book series in 2008, originally intended to start with Consent To Kill. That action-packed thriller contains several twists that change Rapp’s life permanently. CBS Films got as far as attaching Antoine Fuqua to direct and courting Gerard Butler, Colin Farrell and Lost’s Matthew Fox to play Rapp. They’ll go with a younger actor with this version. Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Nick Wechsler are producing. Nachmanoff is repped by CAA.

Ah, Lorenzo di Bonaventura. So anything that people actually like about the source material will probably be excised in favor of broad comedy and/or senseless additions. You still owe me 11 bucks for The Devil Inside, LdB.
Lorenzo is the same guy responsible for Transformers, so we can all guess what a steaming pile of quality the Rapp novels will be.
Honestly though, Flynn’s books are conservative red-meat, nothing more. So anyone expecting Clancy-esque storytelling is in for a nasty surprise.
We Flynn fans have been very worried that that “red meat” will be trimmed out of the movie, that the “villians” will be radically changed, as will Rapp’s character, and these choices are confirming those fears even more.
Traitor is underrated, just picked up Kill Shot, very exciting to have a new filmmaker on this movie!
Great choice. Traitor is a good and underrated movie in my opinion. I’m looking foward to seeing this movie.
If this movie is half as good as the books, this will be a great movie. The next Jason Bourne style movies.I just picked up Kill Shot myself. Have read every book.
um – they haven’t started shooting Chicago Fire yet…..
Lorenzo di Bonaventura did The Devil Inside? Uuuuugh–worst movie ever,
I’m totally cool with Antoine Fuqua directing. He’s a fantastic director and I think he’d do justice to the film. The choice of actors, though? Sorry, doesn’t work. Gerard Butler, Colin Farrell and Matthew Fox are all too old to play the young Rapp in a prequel. Not to mention, if you’ve actually read the books, none of them fits Rapp’ss description one bit. Be serious.
the book was bad. but the robert ludlum books were bad too, and they yielded one great movie and two okay ones, so let’s hope…
Gerard Butler and the others you are courting does not do Mitch Rapp justus. The Australian actor that was talked about before would fit Rapp much better. Butler is too white (sorry for the bluntness) for this role. Read again how Flynn has described Rapp and find someone with that ethnicity. I have also read all of the Mitch Rapp series and Flynn mentions how Rapp’s appearance is many times over.
The director shuffle makes me nervous, not because of the their talent but because of the change. Every new director has their own take on the story. Fuqua was attached to an entirly different book, Zwick came aboard to do an origin story based on a different book and envisioned his film. Nachmanoff will have his own take which he is entitled to.
Love the character but am kind of tired of everything being billed as ‘The next James Bond’ ie Jack Reacher, Mitch Rapp, Jason Bourn
etc… Time for something original that people will try to emulate 30 years form now.
funny you mention jack reacher. I was thinking about how hollywood screwed up every cussler novel they touched and translated it to some of my other favorites.the only actor i pictured as Reacher was Vincent D’nofrio ( age 38 or thereabouts) . As a fan of Flynn since the 3rd option I was down with Butler but the problem hollywood has is either their stars look like pretty boys or they’re not willing to roll the dice on a 100 million$ movie with an unknown or character actor
Obviously you don’t read much. all of the Rapp books are superb and Kill Shot may be the best yet. cannot wait for the next one
The books are fast paced and completely addictive. Hopefully vince will have some say in casting. Just get the project going we are waiting!
I think Chris Pine (Star Trek) is still young enough to play Mitch and is athletic enough to do the stunt work.
Just Sayin!
Young, athletic, dark hair, dark eyes how about Kellan Lutz. The guy has 3 out of 4. He is familiar with wearing contacts. He also has a following so the movie can make enough money for sequels.
I thought chris hemsworth was a good choice for a younger Rapp but not being able to do the movie due to scheduling conflicts sucks but why not go with his brother Liam hemsworth the younger brother of chris he was in the expendables 2 and has a working relationship with bruce wills who will play Stan hurley in american assassin having read all of the books I hope they do not trim the gruesome parts out and I do think Liam would do the Mitch Rapp role justice instead of someone already well known
