EXCLUSIVE: In what will likely be the last pilot order this season, CBS has given a late green light to a an untitled multi-camera comedy starring Martin Lawrence. The project, written by Mike Lisbe and Nate Reger and produced by CBS TV Studios, stars Lawrence as a widowed father of two teenagers who, after losing his job in construction, decides to go to the police academy and become a cop at the age of 46. Lisbe and Reger are executive producing with Lawrence’s managers, Michael Green and Sam Maydew from The Collective.
Lisbe and Reger are familiar faces at CBS, their most recent gigs were serving as supervising producers on the network’s $#*! My Dad Says and co-executive producers on this season’s How To Be A Gentleman. Nevertheless, the choice of their script as a starring vehicle for Lawrence was a surprise. CBS had commissioned 2 top writers, Tom Hertz and Larry Wilmore, to pen 2 potential vehicles for Lawrence, who has a talent deal with CBS this season. Additionally, the network had a couple of backup scripts that were not so specifically tailored for Lawrence, and one of them, Lisbe and Reger’s cop comedy, ended up getting the pilot order. They are with ICM.

So I guess this means Bad Boys 3 ain’t happening.
That was never going to happen. As Michael Bay pointed out, the budget would be astronomical.Michael Bay is the highest paid director in Hollywood, Jerry Bruckheimer is one of the highest paid producers, and Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are both $20M actors. Will Smith actually gets paid a little more.
So that’s damn near $100M just for those 4 salaries.
Tonight on Middle-Aged Cop!
Bad Boys 3? IMO: They should have stopped after the original “bad boys”, anything after that wasn’t good-or-necessary…
Based on the track record of Lisbe and Reger’s other shows, is this really good news for Martin Lawrence?
It doesn’t quite fit the vibe of CBS’s other comedies so if it’s picked up I’d try to jump start Saturday night with it. If nothing else it would be a nice experiment.
I am not saying it won’t happen or it wont work but I am saying the last time Martin Lawrence was on a show on Saturday it didn’t fare well with the public now I know that was a different situation as it resulted in the cancellation of Americas Most Wanted (which did return) but is was a massive mess and though this scenario wouldn’t evolve canceling any show it would be a massive waist of time and talent if they placed it there and was cancelled after say 3 or 4 episodes just saying. Now if they did put it on Saturdays as an experiment to just try ( and heck if it work that would be cool because I would love to see Original scripted shows on Saturdays) I would watch.
Martin can be very funny at times-I wish him the best on his return to tv.
Come on Bad Boys 2 is a great movie.
I’ve had the pleasure of working with Lisbe and Reger the last two seasons, and have nothing but good things to say about them. To the commenters ragging on them about their recent track record with CBS shows, you know nothing. Good luck, Nate and Mike. And remember: “GIIIINAAAAAAAA!”
Truth.
Lisbe and Reger were on the Blacklist a few years back with a comedy script I loved. Hopefully this will help get it made.
Bad Boys 2 unwatchable. The writing was awful.
Lisbe and Reger are two of the most underrated writers out there. Good job CBS! This show sounds great!
these guys might be THE most underrated writers out there, but come on Johnny, this show sounds… like the half-hour version of Police Academy, not Barney Miller. tell me you read the script and it’s amazing, but don’t tell me it SOUNDS great, because that makes me think you’re their friend or their agent’s assistant.
Good God Damn it! These guys are great.
The Hertz script was unreadable.
The Enterprise script was even worse.
Couldnt happen to nicer guys. They also happen to be fantastic writers,
I worked with Mike & Nate last season and they are great writers, hilarious guys and most importantly, complete class acts.
I hope they CRUSH IT with this pilot!
I am so glad for Martin and these talented writers
Never make it on CBS and Martin will screw this up somehow
Word.
So if the show do not make it? will they move it to The CW.
I would say this is gonna fail but when Rob Schneider has a mildly successful show on CBS, anyone has a shot.
Shit’s about to get real. make another bad boys!!!!! they were great!
I have also worked with Nate and Mike. Excellent writers and great people. Congratulations Nate and Mike.
