Century City boutique agency SDB Partners has filed suit against former client Chris Pine, whom SDB claims dumped them via email in November despite previous declarations of loyalty and appreciation for their hard work establishing his career. SDB claims Pine owes the agency commissions on projects including This Means War and his continuing role as Captain Kirk in Paramount’s rebooted Star Trek franchise. You can read details here, including specifics of Pine’s compensation at various stages of his developing career, from the suit filed today in LA Superior Court.

how much do they owe him for Just My Luck?
You would think the courtesy of being fired quietly. Not being child like about it lol.
In response to the question about SDB, they have a very nice client list for a boutique office, including Pauley Perrette from NCIS and Haley Cuocco from Big Bang Theory (forgive any misspellings). And they used to rep Chris Pine!
*sigh* no contract?!? How silly.
Meantime, I am confused about the word ‘Contemporaneously’!! Seriously, I have no idea what it means. I do know it’s not a legal term. One of my English lecturers once told me, ‘… try to avoid any words that end in ‘ly’. Always try to find something better”
Isn’t the precedence in California for a client to pay an agency what is owed for the projects he/she procured while working with them? I see the other list as blather at best – good luck getting paid on those projects; it seems though that SDB should be paid for the jobs that Pine acquired while a client of SDB. So who is behind this breaking of the usual course in our business? The manager? The lawyer? Does Pine himself think this is justified? I’d be surprised to see that happen if he was at CAA. He’s pulling a Snipes with UTA – “if you want to be paid, come after me for it.” Lovely…
And regarding the language in the complaint, it does sound much less than professional on the part of SDB. Alot of whining about loyalty, etc. If Pine did go into the office to complain, then all this was telegraphed and should have been less of a shock than this document seems to purport.
What is clear is that if Pine just agreed to pay his former agency what they were owed that he could have avoided this lawsuit—he has only himself to blame
As an attorney who just read the entire complaint, virtually none of you on this board understand what’s going here (and to be fair about it, the article misses the big picture and instead focuses on the TREK and JACK RYAN commissions).
I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain it and besides, any explanation would likely be met by trolling, but suffice it to say that the Complaint is just fine and can always be amended anyway.
And btw, it was drafted by an attorney with only 4 years under his belt so don’t go so hard on him. What are you guys doing at age 28?
Chris Pine wrote that email about loyalty two years ago. Seems that he’s been unhappy with them for a while, had a meeting, things weren’t resolved, so he’s leaving the team. Why is that so horrible? It’s business. I’m sure there was a telephone call, but yes, the email seems to serve as a formal written goodbye. And this complaint by SDB is laughable. They want 10% on over 15 deals, including all Star Trek sequels. Give me a break. Get the money from TMW and Star Trek 2 and call it a day.
SDB is dumb. This is unnecessary and messy. They want to make him look bad because he left them after 9 year? Impossible. His email said it all. He tried to make it work. 9 years is long time in this business. No way was he disloyal. No way. It was a business move, not personal. From what I can see on all the databases, he is not with an agency, now. So, he really was unhappy with them. No one poached him. So, where is the disloyalty if he is flying solo? He just dumped them. Now, as far as the money goes, they could have handled this in a more classy way. A more private way. I mean, the legal document is so cheesy and melodramatic. An effing telenovela. But, they want to hurt him and have their name on Deadline and THR. What is next an E! show produced by Kimmie K? Lame. Lame. Lame, SDB.
