Christine Woods (FlashForward) has landed the female lead in NBC’s multicamera comedy pilot Daddy’s Girls. The project, from writer Dana Klein, 20th Century Fox TV and Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment, centers on Pen (Woods), a responsible, guarded, brilliant but emotionally challenged Harvard Medical School graduate who just returned from a stint with Doctors Without Borders to discover that her beloved dentist dad, Robert, has become engaged to Pen’s high school classmate Holly –a 29-year-old bubbly blonde who happens to be the “mean girl” in high school. Also cast is Brenda Song (The Suite Life On Deck) as Holly’s best friend Cricket. This marks Woods’ return to NBC where she starred in the comedy series Perfect Couples. She is with Gersh and Emery Entertainment.
Kevin Bigley, Gil Ozeri, and Aya Cash round out the cast of Greg Daniels’ single-camera comedy pilot Friday Night Dinner. The single-camera project, based on the British format, centers on a quirky family that has dinner together every Friday night. Bigley will play one of the older son Paul who is a little immature and sells batteries over the Internet. Ozeri will play Paul’s younger brother Gary, an aspiring songwriter writing jingles for an ad agency. Cash will play the boys’ cousin who recently moved back into town. Allison Janney and Tony Shalhoub were previously cast as the Paul and Gary’s parents. Daniels is executive producing the project with Howard Klein and the original series’ producer Big Talk TV for Universal TV.

Dana Klein’s DADDY’S GIRLS pilot is a complete rip-off of feature YOU AGAIN, where Kristen Bell’s character returned home to find that her brother was engaged to the mean girl who tortured her in high school. What a stale concept.
FRIDAY NIGHT DINNER, on the other hand, sounds terrific. What a cast! Janney and Shalhoub are genius, but Aya Cash is a brilliant stage actress. I was sad TRAFFIC LIGHT didn’t work out for her, but this seems like a sure thing.
Hey Jean,
You’re a moron….calling Daddy’s Girls a rip off and Friday Night Dinner a fresh concept….
Friday night dinner is an adaptation of a PRE EXISTING SERIES…so guess what. It’s a rip off!
Now, go back to serving food….I will take my fries well done….
PS – Danas script is amazing…read it between your breaks at the restaurant…..
Hey Let’s get real (or Dana, perhaps?),
I’ll go back to serving food when you learn how to read. Where did I call FRIDAY NIGHT DINNER a “fresh concept”? You sure are inventive. All I said was that it sounded “terrific” in comparison to something as hackneyed as DADDY’S GIRLS.
Let me know where I can forward you a copy of Hooked On Phonics. I’d be happy to so.
Jean
Why do they just not show the original Friday Night Dinner instead of screwing up another good British comedy. It’s not like they have an original idea in Hollywood anymore anyway. And it’s on NBC….
Not looking forward to Friday Night Dinner. Attempted to watch the original pilot, somehow made it all the way through despite wishing an asteroid would hit the house and kill every member of that obnoxious family. I’m pretty sure that was the point, but I’m still not sure how that was supposed to be funny. I wish it the best for Janney’s sake, but I doubt I’ll be watching unless the script is a complete reinvention of the show… in which case, what’s the point of the adaptation?
Daddy’s Girl does sound like You Again, which was only really palateable because of a fantastic cast and some decent writing. The mean girl concept is ridiculously tired at this point.
Christine Woods is so hot. I think her talents are better suited in drama than comedy. I loved her FlashForward, but didn’t really care for Pefect Couples. I wish her well and hope this project gets picked up as I will watch it, but I wish her agent would help her work as a drama lead.
