EXCLUSIVE: Comedy Central has greenlighted Mash Up, a new, half-hour stand-up series hosted by actor-comedian T.J. Miller and directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts. The show, which has received an 8-episode order, features performance by both established comics as well as up-and-comers as they act out their own material in hilarious, stylized recreations and sketches. Mash Up started off as a Comedy Central stand-up special hosted by Miller, which aired on March 11 at midnight and featured appearances by comedians Matt Braunger, Hannibal Buress, Kyle Kinane and Kumail Nanjiani. But the project’s origins can be traced back to 2004 in Chicago with Braunger, Kinane, Miller, Nanjiani and other comedians pitching Vogt-Roberts ideas for online videos. Vogt-Roberts proposed adding visualized elements to make the clips more dynamic. After the videos netted millions of online views and screened at festivals, the idea eventually found its way to Comedy Central, which ordered a special and now a series, which will be executive produced by Miller, Vogt-Roberts and 3 Arts’ David Miner and Dave Becky. Since the special aired, actor-comedian Miller did a Comedy Central stand-up special No Real Reason, which premiered in November, and was cast as the co-lead in the Fox comedy pilot Little Brother.

I’m sorry but…who is this guy???This area is covered so successfully by “Chelsea Lately” And “Byron Allen”.Not to mention Fox’s reboot of “In Living Color”. So…where’s the excitement? (already done)and why is Comedy Central even bothering…remember, there’s also “Funny or Die”. get this Executive another job….could care less
Laura,
To fans of cutting edge comedy this is great news. T.J.’s show will have some of the best comics on the scene today. If you need to catch up on the new stuff, start with Bill Hicks and move forward from there!
Then go watch Byron Allen you dumb idiot. Your a know nothing who Knows Nothing
TJ Miller is unique and hilarious. He is the biggest talent Second City has produced since Steve Carrell. To compare anything he does to anything Byron Allen does explains how uninformed you are. Get to know his work, you’ll see why his name keeps popping up.
Laura,
This guy is a major star. If you don’t know then I assume you are not in the business which is fine. He was originally repped by A mediocre management company who couldn’t find time for him. So 3 Arts jumped on it and rightfully so.
Butter Thy Toast
Did it ever occur to you that you are un-entertainable, Laura? There is a real disease out there with your symptoms! Look it up on webmd. More that 11% of the population suffers from it. The origin of this disease can be traced to the giant stick up your ass!!
He is a hilarious comedian and you would know exactly who he is if you were tapped into that world
He’s TJ Miller. Maybe you might recognize him from his appearances on the Chelsea Lately program that already successfully covers the area.
Jay Davis would have been a better host, but I hear he’s getting his own Television series too.
That’s gotta be a joke. Jay Davis sticks his arms in his shirt and does “hey look, I have no arms” material. And I’m not kidding, so I hope you are. You are, right? Yea, you’re just joking.
This is perfect! If you don’t know who TJ Miller is, then you just don’t know comedy. I’m sorry, but he is one of the funniest and nicest guys in stand up right now. The same can be said of Kyle Kinane and Matt Braunger. These guys are hilarious. I can’t wait to see this.
Man, Deadline keeps on giving great news. I love it when these things happen to people who totally deserve it. Go T.J.
Good job for TJ but personally I’m not a fan. I wanted to try to like his style but it isn’t there.
i think tj miller is a total bafoon. his moron comedy is stale. and my idiot brother? k – that was a hit.
Who was daniel tosh before his show, comedy central is doing something right. Workaholics being another clear cut example.
Jay Davis is awful. All of us at Conedy Central know him. He’s in our face every time we show up at the laugh factory. Enough. Sit down.
Congrats SHERSHOW.
Also along with TJ, Jordan Vogt-Roberts is a genius at comedy. Jordan and TJ and their fellow ‘Blerds’ alumni have been at the cutting edge of comedy for well over 5 years. So glad TJ and Jordan are joining up again for more fun.
If you are in fact a ‘tastemaker’ (are you the kind that you add to bottled water and it turns red and tastes like Kool-Aid or some other kind?) then this comment explains why so much unfunny material makes it through to audiences. I think thou doth compliment too much. Genius? Really?!? You’re telling me that 29 year old JVR is In league with the Coen Brothers, Monty Python, Will Farrell and anyone else that most would agree are actually comedic geniuses? Look, I’m not hating on the guy but I think you’re a little liberal with the word genius. Look, I’m glad he’s getting his shot and would love to be proved wrong but I think he’s in a much more populated group of Hollywood talent – he was just in the right place at the right time and caught a ride on TJs stratospheric ascent.
Laura,
I’m not mad at you like everyone else. Like who you like. But I don’t understand how this show relates to Byron Allen or Chelsea Lately or Funny Or Die. The first two are shows where stand ups are on a panel talking about current events or pretending to organically bring up jokes they wrote in Byron’s case. This will be a stand up show. Stand up comedy is not executed in a panel. Never has been. Different concept. Check out “Blerds” on YouTube, which, by the way, predates Chelsea Lately, and you will see. Excited for these dudes.
Actually went to a taping of the show…only 2 comedians were blah, the rest were great, and TJ was an awesome host. I’ve also seen him in a set with a bunch of other comedians and whether you consider it moron comedy (as someone mentioned above) or not, I personally find him funny and able to really riff off the cuff which is not a perfected or easy art form…Kudos to TJ for continuing to rise in this difficult field and I hope the show takes off…he was very humbled and friendly to all those who came out to see the show and did not leave us disappointed.
I have seen TJ doing standup and improv, and he is hilarious. He and Nick Vatterott sell out comedy clubs regularly, and that speaks for itself. No one is required to have the same sense of humor as everyone else. I think the Supreme Court decided that recently. The case was “Laura vs all these other guys”.
