EXCLUSIVE: Denzel Washington, whose most recent action effort Safe House premieres in New York tonight, is in discussions to take on another action drama involving Universal Pictures. He’s in early talks to join Mark Wahlberg in 2 Guns, a film that’s based on a Steven Grant graphic novel published by Boom! Studios. Baltasar Kormakur will direct the film. He’s coming off the Universal remake of his own film Contraband, which starred Wahlberg. The script was written by Blake Masters. The financing of the film is still coming together, though I’m told that Emmett/Furla Films the likely co-financier. Marc Platt is producing along with Boom!’s Andrew Cosby and Ross Richie. Randall Emmett and George Furla will likely join that roster.

My international colleague Nancy Tartaglione is covering Berlin this week and is already hearing that the film will be a hot sales title there. Universal will distribute and market in the U.S.
Washington just completed the Robert Zemeckis-directed Flight, playing a pilot with a sobriety problem who pulls off a Sully-like landing of a commercial airliner and saves the passengers, only to see his dark secret surface. That’s a prestige film, but 2 Guns puts him back in badass mode. From Man on Fire to Training Day and American Gangster, nobody does badass better than Washington. In 2 Guns, a DEA agent and an undercover naval intelligence officer unwittingly investigate each other as each steals mob money. Washington is repped by WME.

CAA or UTA please pick up the phone, quick. WME is about to run Denzel’s career into the ground.
There was already a movie called ‘Safe House’ in 1997 starring Patrick Stewart and Hector Elizondo.
Don’t forget 2011′s SafeHouse, not to mention 2008′s Safehouse, aka The Safe House, which shouldn’t be confused with Safe House (1999), The Safe House (2006), or The Safe House (2002).
it would be great to see Denzel act again. Remember Malcolm X?
Yeah, I wouldn’t say Malcolm X was his finest…
But glad to see someone bought into Spike’s vision.
there is no one who fills the screen the way he does. at this point in his career and at his age, the more he does, the better….
I love love love Denzel Washington ! Such a talented and beautiful actor but come on these projects are not worthy of his talent..please Denzel come back making great movies (Malcolm x, Philadelphia, even Training Day he was awesome and yep badass in it oh and Inside Man of course..well many other movies, he is just one great actor who can make great movie choices,so…DO it again Denzel !)
So at wme you have to take m wahlberg on. Does not matter that he cant play the part. Does not matter that someone new should be paid for it. Does not matter that someone old is perfect and has proved themself. All that matters is that a lot of fees can be deducted when you have wahlberg. Who actually saw his last movie. Who pays for those tixs that were bought to inflate opening week?
FLIGHT wins awards. bank it.
“nobody does badass better than Washington”?
Seriously? Which person was responsible for this line? LOL.
This movie sounds really run-of-the-mill. Let me guess: somehow Marky Mark stops 9/11 from happening too…
What a waste of talent. Denzel does these stupid parts in his sleep. Where as Mark Walhberg can’t act at all and plays the same guy in every movie. This forgettable crap will make lots of money.
He is one bad movie away from becoming a caricature of himself, in the same way Tom Cruise and Matthew McConaughey have. It’s too bad cause he is pretty much the best actor in Hollywood.
The movie will suck if EFF is involved. After they take all the money for themselves, there won’t be any money left to make a good movie.
As I recall Wahlberg has done some good movies,Boogie Nights,Three Kings,Departed, and The Fighter, not bad. That question about just who bought those tickets for Contraband, well looks like civilian ticket buyers are the cause.
He is suppose to be the lead but he does not make the picture. He is the weak link in all the above movies. Plus dont drag down washington because someone critiqued wahlberg. Wahlberg should give his agent 20% for getting him parts on top of the syphon money.
Actually, really liked Contraband. Good escapism.
Will be a good team
Is it just me or is he just been playing the same guy for the last decade? Same look, same attitude, same everything. Only the name changes. I really wish he would walk away from these angry guy action movies and go back to the dramas where he flourished.
And…..in each movie he is teamed up with a white co-star. I wonder if hes ever goin to do a movie with black actors again.
Agreed, although in a project like this just casting Denzel is already something of a credibility stretch.
He’s a legendary undercover CIA agent? Operating unseen and inconspicuously all over Europe and the Middle East…..(drumroll please) as a black man? Uh, OK. I doubt when the CIA wants an American to be inconspicuous in those regions they send in the black dude.
But you’re right, the rule all the studio execs know is Black Movie Star in Lead Role = totally OK. Black Movie Star with Black co-lead = Black Movie. Which is not OK. It’s why Denzel and Will Smith keep getting wives/girlfriends like Julia Roberts and Eva Mendez and Charlize Theron in all their movies and Angela Bassett is left on the bench.
It sucks, studio execs are real knuckle draggers when it comes to race and gender issues. Throw the bums out!
Stan you idiot, the Middle East is filled with African (see: black) businessmen that the CIA follow and would like to capture. The FBI has hired more black agents after 9/11 BECAUSE of a black man’s ability to mingle in the Middle East. Just because you don’t see any blacks in Iraq films, doesn’t mean that’s the real world. You hicks slay me. Get some culture and read a NY Times instead of FHM Mag.
“get some culture…and read the New York Times.” Put that Kool-Aid down, man.
Fair point, but you forget “Inside Man”, with Chiwetel Ejiofor as his “sidekick” (partner). But, yeah, I feel you . . . .
Actually, Inside Man co-stars were Clive Owen and Jodi Foster. The commercial track record for 2 black leads is not good…don’t hate the players hate the game!
He’s played the exact same character in every movie for at least the last 15 years. He’s no longer an actor but a brand. Yawn. If he wants to become an actor again, he needs to remove his lips from the Tony Scott teet for a start. Those movies are fun but he’s pretty much remaking the same movie over and over again. Those new piano teeth are awfully distracting too.
“when he wants to again again????”
The guy won a Tony last season for ‘Fences’ with Viola Davis. How many other 60 year old actors are still bankable?
Emmett Furla are a
Great team. They will make it happen.
Mo’ Better Blues (1990) is brilliant and brilliantly underrated.
call me when will smith and denzel do a movie together.
