EXCLUSIVE: Darren Aronofsky is ready to set sail on Noah, the Biblical story of Noah’s Ark. I’m hearing that the Black Swan director wants Russell Crowe to play the title role in the New Regency/Paramount film. I can’t tell you that this is all going to lead to a deal but signs are pointing that way. I have also heard Aronofsky wants The Grey star Liam Neeson for another role. It all starts with Noah, though and it’s nice to see Crowe, one of those larger than life actors, entertaining the prospect of taking on such an iconic role. From Gladiator, L.A. Confidential, The Insider and on down, few actors match his intensity and talent. Gladiator scribe John Logan rewrote the script by Aronofsky and Ari Handel and Aronofsky and Scott Franklin are producing with Mary Parent. Crowe is repped by WME.

They should cast Mel Gibson as Noah.
Hell to the yeah Russell floats my boat! Crowe is one of the most talented actors of our generation. There’s nothing he can’t do, not any role he can’t master. He’s looking as young and fit as ever (his wife Danielle is a very lucky lady!). Good Ontario Russ! Rock it!
Yikes. I don’t agree at all.
Oopps, I meant good ‘onya’. Dang autocorrect. Another Oscar nod for sure!
cool. hope it happens.
Crowe is just not emotionally accessible. Has Aronofsky READ the Genesis account of Noah? Noah is no gladiator. There are NO FIGHT SCENES in his story. He labored in obscurity for decades building an ark and was ridiculed for it. There’s not much else to say about him, other than the Noahic covenant given after the waters receded, which turned the earth from a vegetarian greenhouse to having Noah and his family be the first 8 meat eaters on the planet. I guess Aronofsky can create the character any way he wants. But Bale seemed like a far more accessible choice.
This is a good comment. I agree. I just made a similar note below before I read this. Crowe just doesn’t have the right range of emotions to play Noah, as he’s written about in the old testament. Bale was a much stronger choice. What about Fassbender?
Russell Crowe has floated my boat for years! And, probably, for years to come.
Can you just see Russell C. as Noah yelling at the 2 tree sloths
“hurry up you stinking monkeys!!!”
Another whitewashed version of history (Remember Willem Dafoe as Jesus!?!). Face reality folks, ancient Jews DID NOT look like the European ones who are making movies in Hollywood today. How about an ethnically accurate vision of the people of that time? They’d be a lot darker and there’d be many more diverse ethnicities interacting with each other.
I’d rather see someone like a Joaquin Phoenix, Michael Fassbender, Eric Bana.. Who am I forgetting? The point is, Noah is a very humble character. He needs to be played by someone who can exude humility, power and strong emotion. I feel like Russell Crowe exudes a lot of arrogance. I don’t think this is the best choice.
Crowe isn’t,”emotionally accessible?” What planet are you from? Did you ever see Cinderella Man, A Beautiful Mind,The Insider,Gladiator,Master and Commander,3:10 to Yuma? You would have to be deaf, dumb and blind to miss how the guy CAPTURES the essence of the characters and plugs that knowledge into his scenes. All of those characters,”exude humility, power and strong emotion.”And what is interesting is that it was missed by you.
Whenever I see this project mentioned, I envision Seth Rogen in a gray wig and long beard instead.
“Making movies, making music, and fightin’ ’round the world!”
Uuhh.. I’m pretty sure Noah was a black man…
