Federal officials took down 16 websites today that they say illegally stream live sports and pay-per-view events — three days before the U.S.’ biggest live-TV event the Super Bowl. The government said he sites offered links to pirated telecasts of NFL, NBA and NHL games and wrestling events. A Michigan man has been charged for running a majority of the sites. The news came soon after New England Patriots quarterback said in an interview that he watched last year’s Super Bowl via a pirated web feed. “Last year I was rehabbing my foot in Costa Rica, watching the game on an illegal Super Bowl website,” he said. “And now I’m actually playing in the game. So, it’s pretty cool.” Brady and his Patriots face the New York Giants on Sunday in the NFL’s title game, which last year set an all-time TV record when it drew 111 million total viewers. NBC, which has the game this year, already has taken a step to stomp out piracy by announcing it will stream the Super Bowl live.

Frankly who would watch this game in low quality illegally especially when NBC is streaming it for free on their website?
I think they just use the Super Bowl as reasoning to attempt to clean up these sites.
Because there are plenty of reasons to utilize them (out of market games, more channels, more games, multiple games at the same time, etc., etc.)
Not to mention there are some HD streams out there and if you have any sort of working Adblock these sites become extremely more bearable.
They didn’t get all of them!
Hello SOPA that supposedly hasn’t gone through legislation yet.
This is absurd, why are the feds shutting down potential revenue streams? The issue isn’t that there are pirated streams, it’s that the content providers aren’t smart enough to provide legal ones. When are people going to get the point that piracy is an indicator of demand???
If only the stupid content providers would allow it so you could find streaming programming on sites like Hulu, Netflix, ABC, NBC, FOX, ESPN, History Channel, A&E, TBS, CBS, Cartoon Network, Speed Channel, Tv Land, Bravo, USA Network, Spike Tv.
P
“Piracy is an indicator of demand”? No, piracy is an indicator of theft, plain and simple. It has nothing to do with demand. Please don’t rationalize stealing.
That’s not logical. If there was no demand, there’d be no theft.
Yes you idiot they CAN do this because contrary to the load of shit you were fed (and were dumb enough to believe) by Google and Co., where they make MILLIONS selling ads and search placements to illegal sites, SOPA simply applied rules ALREADY IN PLACE IN THE USA to criminals who locate outside our borders. It is already illegal to steal content – the very content that ensures I, and other below the line crew members, have healthcare and a pension. If you are so sure it is okay to steal movies, go to Walmart and take some DVDs. But you won’t because that would be wrong – just like doing it electronically.
Amen! I’m all for making sure we don’t allow legislation that is too heavy-handed in either direction (and I’m glad that those against the legislation were able to jump start a national debate in this age of short attention spans), but let’s not overlook the simple fact that protecting against piracy is a good thing. Somehow, in the chorus of angry voices pro and con, many people lost sight of this.
Stupid Tom Brady ruining it for everybody
“SOPA simply applied rules ALREADY IN PLACE IN THE USA to criminals who locate outside our borders. It is already illegal to steal content – the very content that ensures I, and other below the line crew members, have healthcare and a pension. ”
I agree that much of what is being streamed is both illegal and stealing from crew members benefits but…
The problem is that US is trying to apply US law on a worldwide basis which is completely contrary to normal international principles. It makes the US very unpopular and ultimately will back fire as other countries react likewise.
This is all irrelevent. It’s the internet, you can shut down as many sites as you want, they’ll just be back up in a few days under a different name. Why not work WITH these sites for some potential revenue rather then just stomp them out?
Be Careful what You Wish For. That illegal music on your computers, phones etc. is included. And I Know You Have It. Didn’t Know You Had Holier Than Thou People Working In Hill
You do realize the US isn’t the world. You can’t apply US law to other sovereign nations. The same way Saudi law prohibiting all religions but Islam can’t be forced on an American living in our country.
