Fox has handed two more comedy pilot orders, both cast-contingent.
Let It Go, written/executive produced by DJ Nash (Traffic Light) and executive produced by Peter Tolan, is an ensemble comedy about a married couple, his best friend, and her sister as they try to navigate, negotiate, and sometimes manipulate society’s unspoken rules. CAA-repped DJ Nash, currently co-executive producer on NBC’s Bent, is exec producing with Tolan and Tolan producing partner Michael Wimer. Sony TV is producing with Tolan’s Fedora banner.
Must Hire, from Sony TV and Jamie Tarses’ Fanfare, was written by Reed Agnew and Eli Jorne (Wilfred) who executive produce with Tarses and Julia Franz. It centers on an uptight, young executive who hires his dad for an entry level position and is shocked to discover that his new hire is a disruptive office clown.

Congrats to DJ. Couldn’t happen to a better or funnier guy.
Second.
Third!
If Must Hire is casted correctly, I would watch it. May I suggest Michael Keaton as the dad? I’m not sure if he would do television, but I would at least call ICM or Matt Johnson to see if he’d be open to it. He’d be funny as hell.
Sure, I’ll look into it.
Reed Agnew and Eli Jorne are two of the most talented writers around. FOX has made a great move producing a pilot with them. I’m sure it will be fantastic.
Congrats to Reed and Eli, two of the most talented young guys around.
So happy for you DJ!!
The key to getting your pilot made: write a show that already exists and act like it’s a new idea. Network TV’s a joke. And I’d say DJ Nash was one too – if he were funny at all.
The first part of your statement is partially true. The second part of your statement is totally false.
Aww, did your pilot not get picked up? Sorry. Stay classy, “Balls Deep.”
When seeking insightful, penetrating commentary about television, who better to trust than a person calling himself “Balls Deep”? Seriously, ad hominem attacks add nothing to the discussion. DJ is a very talented writer who will make a great showrunner. He’s also an honorable man, an example others might learn from…
Agreed re: “Balls Deep.” But, how about this? I’m a professional writer w/ numerous credits. While I do not know DJ (or Balls Deep for that matter) I’ve reviewed his credits on IMDB, and his resume does not impress. A couple of the things he’s worked on are completely bereft of humor, nuance, story line or conflict. Further, the concept mentioned in the post above seems simultaneously bland and derivative. Thus, I surmise that dJ, while probably a very nice fellow, sucks as a writer, and this project, and hopefully his career and the careers of all the hacks currently working in Hollywood, will soon fail.
Deadline commenters love to respond to any negativity with cries of “bitter failure” but I’m sitting in a 4,500 sq ft. home overlooking a blue ocean as I type this, with a bunch of Emmy nominations to my credit. But not one win. So there. Let the rejects who comment on here lay waste to my opinion because everytime I’ve been nominated I’ve lost Emmy.
Looking at IMDB is an absolutely ridiculous way to judge a writer’s talent. Read their original material then decide. Some of the best writers I know have been on the worst shows, and folks with amazing credits can be terrible writers. E.g., the guys who wrote WORK IT.
A lot of people have become very rich by writing on shows that are very bad. Not saying this is necessarily true in your case, “A,” but the fact of the matter is… comedy is subjective, and therefore always subject to ridicule. Comes with the territory. But it’s surprising that so many of our so-called peers (who presumably understand how the business works) will judge prematurely and without firm basis. I understand if people need to blow off a little steam, but save it for your Facebook posts — let’s try to keep forums about our profession more professional.
I don’t disagree with some of what you wrote. My point is, that several of DJ’s credits are on entities that were so awful that if there was even one halfway decent writer on staff, the show wouldn’t have sucked THAT bad.
@Chagrined, I wish I knew you, personally. I would work with you ANY day of the week and twice on Sunday.
@A, you obviously don’t understand… television is writing by committee. Period. Writers alone are not to blame for a show’s success or failure. There are executives, ratings, scheduling and competition to be considered as well. Your analysis is a wee bit flawed.
Oh ho ho “A”…I’m calling BULLSHIT. Really? View of the ocean? Emmy nominated? And yet you are trolling deadline, shitting all over someone who GOT A JOB? Getting a pilot order in this day and age is a miracle and regardless of someone’s talent or ridiculous imdb credits, its not their fault that some fat suits on a board think they can make money off of it. You don’t like it? Then you should DEFINITELY spend some more of your time commenting bitterly on some hollywood website. DEFINITELY prove to the world that there is no difference between you and “BALLS DEEP”. Don’t worry “A”, you’ve laid waste to your own opinion.
SO HAPPY FOR DJ!!!
Man, I don’t know DJ but those are some shitty credits. Hope this pilot is better than the crap on his IMDB listing.
Agnew & Jorne are awesome. Good for them.
You know what sucks? When a talented good guy like DJ has to read snarky crap written by the bitter douches who post here. I suppose this is a high profile industry and it comes with the territory, but man, these are just cowardly, baseless low blows. Price of success, I guess.
Actors have been dealing with that for since IMDB’s inception. I would it take it as a compliment to be honest. If no one’s being snarky, you’re not doing anything most likely. If actors aren’t above criticism, why should writers?
If DJ’s smart… he doesn’t read the comments. The same people who write bitter comments under autonomy, will meet DJ in a roomful of “industry” peeps and tell him how much they love his work when there’s a percentage up for grabs. SMH
Wow—I watch Wilfred (FOX) —every episode. It is so funny…hilarious. I agree—Jorne and Agnew are hysterically funny. Anything they write will make you ROFL. Just watch!
Dj Nash is a hack!!!!!! N
DJ is a tremendously good guy and a very funny writer. I’m beyond excited to see this pilot. Congrats to DJ. Great work by a great writer.
I loved this script. Really really good. Congrats to DJ!
