Documentary filmmaker Josh Fox was arrested yesterday when his crew attempted to film a House hearing on the controversial natural gas drilling technique hydraulic fracking. Initial reports said an ABC News crew was also prevented from recording the hearing but ABC denied the network had assigned coverage. Fox, director of the Oscar-nominated 2010 documentary Gasland, and his crew were taken into custody after Republicans on the House Science Committee objected to their presence. Gasland has raised awareness of the process of fracking, which involves pumping water and chemicals into drilling sites to free natural gas deposits from shale. Fox said the hearing was scheduled on short notice and he tried contact committee staff to secure clearance but he never received an answer. He also asked a credentialed crew to tape the hearing on his behalf but was informed it was not permitted. Fox was charged with unlawful entry and released by Capitol police. He told the New York Times he did not have to pay a fine or post bail. His court date is February 15th.

well done – congratulations for reporting this!
With this act, I think the Republicans just lost control of the House in 2012 and probably forever.
This is pure abuse of power. That the Republican majority would not let a credentialed crew record the proceeding of our Congress on a non-security matter is appalling. If Democrats had done this they would be just as shameful. The fact they would not even clear this guy for attendance, a legitimate artist/documentarian shows the degree to which our organs of government are craven cogs in corporate machines doing nothing but their shilling. The Republicans are worse but both parties are utterly corrupt. Here, we ought to simply vote the GOP out of power in the house. I almost feel 535 random people lotteried foot the house and senate would be better than the paid for and bought ‘elected’ officials we have now.
On the video of the incident you can hear the ranking Democrat on the committee trying to stop the arrest.
and he was NOT credentialed for Congress. All filming must be approved ahead of time, and this was not. Not saying they were right, but I am clarifying the facts. Further, the claims about ABC initially reported turned out to be incorrect, but were initially published based on the statements by Fox. Something tells me there is more to this than what is out there so far…
Certain processes can only take place in the dark.
And sunshine is the best disinfectant.
attempting to report on what our representatives do behind closed doors is considered an act of insurgency and will be dealt with accordingly.
