George Lopez is returning to the family sitcom genre. I’ve learned that Lopez, star, co-creator and executive producer of multi-camera sitcom George Lopez, which ran on ABC for six seasons and 120 episodes, has closed a deal in principal with Lionsgate TV subsidiary Debmar-Mercury to co-create and star in a new multi-camera comedy about a Latino family. Lopez will executive produce the series with his manager, 3 Arts’ Michael Rotenberg.
Upon finalizing the deal, Lopez and Debmar-Mercury, who both declined comment, are expected to begin a search for a showrunner. The project will be developed and produced under Debmar-Mercury’s 10-90 model, in which the company sells sitcoms to cable networks with an initial 10-episode straight-to-series order, which, if meeting a ratings target, triggers a multi-season order as big as 90 episodes. The goal is for Debmar-Mercury to quickly amass enough episodes for the sitcom’s launch in broadcast syndication, area where Lopez has been successful. While never a major hit in its original run on ABC, George Lopez has enjoyed a strong afterlife in syndication. A decade after its ABC premiere, the show continues to do well in primetime on cable, Nick at Nite and a Spanish-language version on MTV’s Tr3s, and in the afternoon in broadcast syndication. The George Lopez sitcom follows in the footsteps of Debmar-Mercury’s previous successes under its model, all minority family sitcoms: Tyler Perry’s House Of Payne and Meet The Browns and Ice Cube’s Are We There Yet?. All three went beyond the initial 10-episode orders on TBS, with the first already above the syndication threshold. Debmar-Mercury’s first non-ethnic sitcom, the upcoming Charlie Sheen comedy series Anger Management for FX, is written/executive produced by Bruce Helford, who co-created and ran George Lopez. Just like Sheen does on Anger Management, CAA-repped Lopez is expected to have ownership in his show. He most recently hosted a late-night talk show on TBS.

DIVERSITY!!!! Whooo-Hoooo! Viva La Mexicccccco
Hoochie mama-this maricon gots a new show, again? How many friggin shows can this yutz get?
He stinks in them all!
well, this is different!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So George is getting back into a sitcom….So that means his late nite show on TNT was cancelled?????????? Moving down to TBS from TNT after having a sitcom on ABC ten years ago…..ya really making progress there George. I hope his golf game is doing better.
His late now show was on TBS.
Wow! What a change of pace for Lopez. I mean, who knew he was Latino? I can’t wait to hear new race/culture based jokes given, followed by his trademark look.
How cutting edge he is. It’s the freshest thing to look forward to in the year 2001.
If you really watch him, you can see that he carries the weight of much pain. It’s because I see pain when I watch him that I find him unfunny, despite the clever lines and random put-down humor.
I met him many years ago, and sadly, you could see that he does carry pain, as do many comedians. He seemed painfully unhappy. Unfortunately, he couldn’t find happiness when his wife gave him a kidney!
Sounds like rob.
So George is going to marry into a Hispanic family and culture clash hilarity ensues.
But, George is also Latino…
I used to enjoy the old show, but after the way he treated his wife, I don’t think I could watch him again.
I applaud more latino voices and faces on television, but these shows seem to all fall into the same “spicy latino/a” stereotypes.
The only one that seems at all different is Devious Maids, but then again, they’re playing Maids…
When his ABC sitcom was cancelled, after six seasons, Lopez claimed it was due to ‘racism’ in Hollywood. Blah-bitty-blah-blah-blah.
I’ll pass. Tim Allen’s “Last Man Standing’ is all I need for laughs – and he doesn’t even try to make me feel guilty while doing so.
Welcome back, George. You are a very funny man and should be on TV.
Welcome back, George. You’re a funny man and should be on TV. And Savvydude, if Tim Allen’s boring humor from yesteryear is all you need then have at it.
The only way this show works is if it’s on Univision.
His schtick is way too old, even for mainstream cable audiences.
Wow. Sounds completely different from the George Lopez show…
