The Harry Potter series made author J.K. Rowling one of Britain’s richest citizens and now the writer is ready to tread new literary territory with her new book geared toward adults. Publication for the new novel and further details are being kept under wraps until later this year, but Rowling said through the book’s publisher Little, Brown and Co that the new novel she is presumably still writing will be a departure from Potter: “Although I’ve enjoyed writing it every bit as much, my next book will be very different to the Harry Potter series, which has been published so brilliantly by Bloomsbury and my other publishers around the world. The freedom to explore new territory is a gift that Harry’s success has brought me, and with that new territory it seemed a logical progression to have a new publisher. I am delighted to have a second publishing home in Little, Brown, and a publishing team that will be a great partner in this new phase of my writing life.” Published between 1997 and 2007, Rowling’s Harry Potter series of seven books sold over 450 million copies in 200 territories and 74 languages worldwide, spawning a pop culture gold mine and a lucrative movie franchise from Warner Bros that concluded with 2011′s Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2. J.K. Little, Brown publisher David Shelley will be Rowling’s editor and publish the untitled novel in Britain, while Michael Pietsch, EVP of Little, Brown and Co, responsible for publication in the U.S. Rowling was represented by Neil Blair of The Blair Partnership.

I still maintain that the last 3 books of the Harry Potter series were not children’s books. J.K herself said that a person should not be any younger than Harry is in the books when they read them. It always bugs me when I see them in the children’s section. Those and Phillip Pullman’s Dark Materials. When are people going to realize that just because the main characters are children doesn’t mean the books are for children.
The thing is if the children will actually get some of the messages behind the books, When I was 9 I didn’t understand that the Dark Materials books were heavy on religion, I just saw cute animals. Reading it 10 years later and I understood it all.
but harry potter as a series started off as a children’s book in every way right down to its overly simplistic fantasy storyline. You cant compare it with His Dark Materials which was more epic and deeper in subtext.
The only reason they are in the children’s section is that the others ARE childrens books and they dont want to seperate a series, that would just be plain dumb
OMG!YES!YES!YES! I’ve been waiting forever for a new book! Can’t believe it’s happening!
Good for her! Her fans (well, maybe not her younger ones, but the ones that grew up with the series) will be eagerly waiting.
After the first book it went so dark… Definitely became a young adult/adult novel
I salute any artist or craftsperson for taking such a big leap. I hope the book is good and does well on the market.
And remember the old joke… When you write normal fiction you should be Joanne Rowling.. Fantasy and such.. J.K. Rowling.
