EXCLUSIVE: Former Heroes star Hayden Panettiere is heading back to primetime with a starring role in ABC’s drama pilot Nashville. Written by Callie Khouri, directed by R.J. Cutler and produced by Lionsgate and ABC Studios, Nashville is described as a family soap about love, country music, family, politics and sex set against the backdrop of the Nashville music scene. It centers on 40-year-old Nashville superstar Rayna James who is stunned to find that her star is fading and her label requires her to team up with teen sensation Juliette Barnes (Panettiere) on tour–or else face the loss of her own tour and the label’s promotion of her latest record, whose sales have been underwhelming. On Nashville, Panettiere, repped by WME and Brookside Artist Management, joins previously cast Robert Wisdom, Powers Boothe, Clare Bowen and Jonathan Jackson. The actress, best known for her role as cheerleader Claire Bennett on the NBC drama Heroes, recently toplined the Lifetime telefilm Amanda Knox: Murder On Trial In Italy and co-starred in the feature Scream 4. In addition to acting, Panettiere also has done singing on the side, recording several songs. Here is the music video for her debut single, the 2008 Wake Up Call:
TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

This is a TERRIFIC fit for Panettiere, who is a surprisingly strong singer. I was taken aback by how fantastic she was in SCREAM 4 (she stole the film.) She’s a very talented girl.
I’m curious to know who they’ll cast as the older country star opposite her.
This pilot got a lot more interesting in the past few hours with the casting of The Wire’s Robert Wisdom and Hayden Panettierre is not only very cute but she also defends dolphins!
It used to be called COUNTRY STRONG. But they couldn’t steal the title AND the plot.
Seems like a very uninspired casting choice…especially after watching that video.
No, actually it’s inspired casting. The gossip press will go nuts, the press that the desired demographic audience avidly reads. They’ll get millions in free publicity and she actually is talented, cute and very hard-working.
Oh, and she’s not Lindsay Lohan.
Uh, the gossip press is not going to go nuts. She’s barely even on anyone’s radar anymore.
This is another FAIL(yep, as in huge disaster) for ABC. They really are struggling for decent pilots this year. They’ve got some possible successes with their comedy pilots, but their dramas all sound defeated before they even get off the ground, much like their current spring season of new series.
Are there dolphins in Nashville?
Great casting choice. Anyone that doesn’t think so, just doesn’t know much about this talented young women. Hayden is the total package.
Hated her in Heroes yet was the only good thing besides Neve Campbell in Scream 4, go figure.
Country Strong the television show?
I CANT WAIT (!) I love Hayden, she’s such a talented actress, and she’s finally back on tv. Cant wait for the pilot, I wish her and the show lots of success.
That was a really well written article Nellie. Hayden is my favorite actress in the world and she will fit this role like a glove. I can’t wait for it to come out now.
She is so damn appealing.
Check out JLo.
Tell me this isn’t her caucasian younger double.
Love her!
Sounds a lot like the Brad Paisley/Matt Bomer pilot from a couple of years ago, also titled “Nashville”
Hayden seems fine but it doesn’t matter who they cast in that role or the older role – this thing is bound for doom. Recycled boringness. Only picked up because of writers husband.
I think this has a lot of potential. If they write some good songs for the show and have a good plot it could really work. Hayden is a good choice.
Didn’t know Jonathan Jackson was in it till now. He has a indie band called Enation, quite good. He has a good voice & is a song writer to boot.
She is brilliant in Heroes. The show wouldn’t have been the same without her.
I can’t belive it, it’s like they refused Matt Bomer and Zachary Quinto pilot in 2010 to make the same show in 2012 with the only diference that is not a woman and a man (connie’s role) but two mwomen
