UPDATE, 5:56 PM: Original Prods in a statement this afternoon has countered claims that the company was stingy when it came to benefits and worker safety on the show. “Original Productions has always offered competitive wages and excellent working conditions,” it read. “It is the reason Original Productions attracts the kind of talent that has been successfully developed into award-winning crafts people with impeccable industry reputations. Additionally, Original Productions follows a strict Injury/Illness Prevention Program policy for all of its productions with healthy and safe working conditions as a priority for all production crews.”
The statement said neither IATSE or the Teamsters have filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board for certification and that for now “it is the company’s position that it is not obligated to recognize these two unions as bargaining representatives.”
PREVIOUS, 1:01 PM: About 100 people turned up outside the Burbank compound of 1000 Ways To Die producer Original Productions on a chilly Monday morning. Sympathizers including reps from WGA West as well as SAG and AFTRA joined the picket line, which got underway at 8:30 AM, chanting their call for a union contract for the Spike TV show. Today’s action comes after Original fired two-dozen workers after they voted to seek union representation; production has been stopped for more than a week, and Friday the unions called for a strike. “This is a successful television series and this company refuses to work with unions,” Steve Dayan, an organizer at Teamsters Local 399, told Deadline in front of the well-barricaded Original facility. “This company is non-union for all the unions — non-SAG, non-AFTRA, non-Teamster, non-DGA. These guys have a successful television series and they’re not willing to pay their crew their benefits.”
Dayan added that Spike should step in to pressure Original to give benefits as attempts to negotiate with the production company — which also produces reality shows Ice Road Truckers and Deadliest Catch for Discovery – have gone unanswered. ”Spike TV has a lot of other stuff that’s shot union and have pulled off good shows that work union,” said Peter Marley, international representative at IATSE. “I’d like them to ask these guys to do the same thing.”
In a statement released Monday afternoon, Original claims unions never made attempts to meet with the company prior to the picket line announcement. “IATSE and Teamsters have not filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) for certification, nor have they demonstrated a majority of the crew signed cards,” said Original. “At this time, it is the company’s position that it is not obligated to recognize these two unions as bargaining representatives.” It went on to add its own version of events, saying IATSE and Teamsters union representatives approached crew members asking them to sign union cards and walk off the job, which some did. The company claims that some workers were confused by what they were doing and asked to return to work and Original has welcomed them back.
WGAW president Christopher Keyser joined picketers today and said companies succeed when benefits are offered to their workers. But he feared that Original’s refusal to negotiate is an all-too-pervasive trend across the U.S. ”I know how hard people work and the time they dedicate on these shows,” he said. “Asking for [health and a pension] should be the bare minimum. The industry is successful when there is a stable workforce. There is a strain of this move in the wrong direction in the country right now and that concerns me. There’s no reason we should be turning against each other.”

Getting rid of individuals who have made something successful only frames how greedy Original is.
It’s a shit show. Six people – three of them hot girls in bikinis – could make it in a garage.
That’s why it’s on Spike, it’s cheap programming. If it becomes “not cheap,” it will disappear.
If the Unions are chasing shitty little productions like this, it’s a sign of how truly screwed they are.
i worked on the show, now i’m out of work because the show officially shut down today. 100 people lost jobs today the only people who didn’t return to the show were the union employees that chose to work on a non union show, they left unwillingly the day the union reps showed up and told them they had to leave. the show pays above scale rates to every department except actors who are generally people getting their first break and usually terrible. the hours are just like every union job 12hours with overtime. i think it’s terrible that the local economy in los angeles will also suffer from this. i’ve lost other tv jobs to canada in the past , sure would be nice if the unions would do their mafia work on all the major players who run away with american jobs to produce shows on the cheap. to have union reps bully vendors of the show sounds illegal to me. just so they can get more people to fill up their own pot. just a tragedy.
I thought this was a union show seasons ago! It makes me sick that Original Productions didn’t even talk to any of the Union reps to work out a deal. They obviously do not care about the people that work for them. Shame on them! Original and Spike will loose out in tremendous revenue that this successful show generated. The crew should have organized sooner!
Unions need to go away. If they spent as much time working as they do protesting, things would actually get done.
Spoken like someone who doesn’t work in this town.
Any worker who depends upon the munificence of his or her employer for a fair wage deserves what happens to them. Read your Hollywood history.
If you’re not with us RJ, you’re against us.
Oh workers, can you stand it?
Oh tell me how you can?
Will you be a lousy scab?
Or will you be a man?
Which side are you on, boy?
Which side are you on?
“Boy?”
Wow. You just summed up in one word how union leaders feel about their members.
History lesson – because you desperately need one.
“Which Side Are You On?” was written by Florence Reece, the wife of a striking Harlan County mine worker, after the sheriff (hired by mine owners) busted into her family’s house to intimidate her family. Because of the work of her husband Sam Reece and the United Mine Workers, the health and rights of mine workers were protected. The lyrics are addressed to the potential scabs who would take work from the union men.
But thanks for playing. Now move along and be thankful that you’re still on mom and dad’s insurance policy until you turn 26.
How is it possible for this show to hire a union name actor like Ron Perlman to narrate the show and still remain a non-union show for the rest of their performers? Does AFTRA (or SAG) even allow those kinds of exceptions?
AFTRA does. All. Day. Long…
How many of the actual crew picketed? 1? 3? of those 100 union members, how many were the people actually allegedly being “taken advantage of” by Original?
How is that relevant? It’s called a “Union” for a reason.
Yeah, and they are described as “thugs” for a reason, too.
A well earned one at that.
There are a total of 4 employees who are picketing. TOTAL!
If Unions didn’t step in then exploitation and intimidation of labor that feeds the pockets of the greedy would go unabated. Especially in LA-LA land.
Although, like life, unions are imperfect.. they are what separates us from the third world. Is it really too much to ask to make these companies provide or their employees? And as a tax payer if they don’t you will…why not spread the wealth before the government has to?
Wait so the millions of non-union workers in this country are living in third world conditions? Have you been to a third world country with no running water, outhouses for toilets and people dying of diarrhea?
More like a thousand people who need real jobs.
> Getting rid of individuals who have made something
> successful only frames how greedy Original is.
Yea, it had nothing to do with the content of the show; just the “workers.”
No company should keep trouble-makers. If you want in a Union, then get on a Union show.
So tired of the Unions and their hatred of success. They just have to take that which is NOT theirs; while lying about the reason for doing that.
If Unions were worth the hassle, there would be more Union members employed. duh.
“So tired of the Unions and their hatred of success. ”
Yes, we union members really hate success, Mark. Just like the terrorists hate our freedoms.
If there weren’t unions in this town, we’d all be working for free.
It just dawned on me that Healthcare is a non-issue. Obamacare is going to fix that. Social Security is the retirement plan.
More proof that Unions are nothing but greed driven.
mark – talk to any medical professional to find out what obamacare is going to do medicine (yes i voted for and will again for obama). and re: social security – can you live on $1500 tops a month? if it is still around when we are gonna need it?
Healthcare is a non-issue? What planet are you on? Clearly you don’t have Healthcare or you would know, but you will be the first in line to mooch off the ER when you are sick and thus the rest of us carry your load.
HEALTHCARE is the ENTIRE ISSUE, and that’s why we need more union jobs in Unscripted Reality TV.
Original (and any other company for that matter) who isn’t a signtory to union agreements has every right to choose to produce their shows non-union. Unions may think they control the business but they don’t.
So, you understand the basic first step. Now, on to the rest of the story. Workers have a right to contact the union to help them unionize. Then other unions have the right to pressure the non-union company to unionize.
Which brings us to step 3, Original can fire those attempting to unionize. Plenty of people are out of work and willing to take a paycheck on a nonunion show.
And those people are called SCABS.
Just Me is a perfect example of just how stupid the union thugs are. A SCAB isn’t someone who works non-union, you idiot. A Scab is a non-union worker who takes a union worker’s job while the union worker is on strike.
Just Me is why unions are scary. Someone this dumb has an entire ring of organized crime behind him, while they’re putting decent people out of work.
If the employees truly are valuable enough that the employer needs them specifically to maintain the same level of quality, then perhaps a wage increase is fair. On the other hand, if the employer can get a similar level of quality from other people who will do the job for the same low wages, then the employer should feel free to hire new people to maintain the same budget if that’s what he or she values.
Well said!
You people posting about Union “greed” don’t understand how these shows work. I have worked on this show several times. Actors are paid, if at all, $100 for up to a 12-hour day. Do the math – it’s less than minimum wage. We don’t get ANY benefits for non-union work, and since most of us are self-employed that means we have to provide all our own health insurance. And as for “just get a union job?” Well, I’m in both unions now. That means I can’t work non-union jobs, and many of the union jobs now have something called a SAG waiver which means they don’t have to pay us actors anything at all. That’s right – actors work for free. I can only speak for actors, but most of us have to work two or more jobs so we can pursue our passion of acting. It has nothing to do with greed – it’s called “survival.” So unless you know what you are talking about, spare us the Tea Party lectures about “union greed.”
as a reality producer, it’s quite something to read all of these comments. we haven’t paid anybody $100 a day since the late 90s. our lowest paid, entry level PA’s make in the neighborhood of $800 per week…well above minimum wage and well above that $100/day idea.
and for the stuff which would be impacted by union rates were our shows to be flipped — we pay significantly more than union scale across the board. I don’t pay an editor less than $3,000 or $3,250 per week and union rates are far below that. so this notion that we’re running some sweatshop where everyone’s mistreated and worked 7 days a week for 15 hours a day is laughable. our staff gets paid holidays (yes, even the freelancers) when their production schedules allow (which is frequently) and we do our best to keep them working all the time and to be loyal to them.
oh, and by the way, we don’t own the shows either — the networks do, so we make our fee money exactly one time. we really have no power either and it’s not like we rake in money on stuff we did five years ago. maybe the big network reality shops who do “Survivor” or “The Bachelor” and the like do…but not most of us.
I don’t know what reality shows you produce, but the rates you speak of seem wildly out of the ordinary.
If there’s actually a PA making $800 per week (on a reality show), thank your lucky stars and pray you never lose your job, because you will NEVER make that kind of money as a PA, ever again.
But you left off Health Insurance which is often the reason that shows flip – crew members want to make their hours and get their benefits. When Biggest Loser turned it wasn’t because of wages – everyone on that show was paid well and fed well. The people who flipped that show did it because the producers wouldn’t pony up for Insurance. There were already union members on Biggest Loser who were sick of working season after season without contributing anything to their H&P. I’d be interested in knowing how many of the 1000 Ways To Die crew are already IA.
As for your PAs making 800/week. At $160/ day that’s better than many shows, but many others pay in the 110 – 125 range to keep them just at minimum wage. And I’m talking right now in 2012.
My last job was as a P.A. on a large budget (union ) feature. I made $750 a week. Can I come work for you for a bump?
1000 Ways, I Didn’t Know I was Pregnant, those Discovery re-enactment detective shows… I see casting notices for them all the time specifying a $100/day rate. It is pervasive. A friend of mine just did another Spike show about bad renters and it paid $100 also. Don’t act like this is something out of the past.
Exactly. I just saw a casting notice for 1000 WAYS TO DIE last week for $100/day. This is happening RIGHT NOW.
Hey F, I was an actor on “!000 ways to Die” a few weeks ago, it in fact paid $100 dollars for a 12 hour day. Welcome to that “reality”, guess it’s still the late 90′s as far as original productions is concerned!
Now THAT was well said.
Want some cheese with that whine? Good god, it’s a non-union show you ding dong. You know what it pays before you take the job, because you had to actually AUDITION to get on it. And isn’t the whole idea as a struggling (and apparently bitchy) actor, to get your face and work “out there’? I would think being on a hit show would be a good thing for an actor…
And if it’s so bad, why did you keep coming back for more? So not only are you a whiny ding dong, you’re also a moron with the recollection skills of a sneezing goldfish.
People should feel free to bargain for more money if they feel that they deserve it, and doing it collectively can be the best way to give one’s voice weight.
It’s called fairness, and it works for both the employer and the employees. Nothing is owed unless it is deserved. Unions are not evil; employers just need to have the resolve to stand up to them when they ask for more than they deserve.
People are willing to work for whatever comes their way most of the time not necessarily what they deserve. Unions help set a standard so that they get a livable working rate on what they deserve rather than a low-ball one that they are willing to work for to sheerly survive on.
I have worked on these non-union reality shows for the past 7 years. I work hard over, 60 – 70 hours a week steadily and have nothing to show for it other than a studio apartment and over 50,000 dollars in debt to a hospital due to not having health insurance. With the cost of living in LA, there is no future in non-union shows especially if I were ever to consider having a family.
Anyone else find it entertaining that the “Live Better, Work Union” bumper stickers are always on crappy run down 25 year old trucks or Civics?
Hello? Those are “work vehicles”. People who drive professionally usually have more than one car and use the “crappy” car to get to and from set. Would YOU seriously put a bumper sticker on the Mercedes, BMW or Escalade that’s sitting in your garage?
Where are the quotes from Thom Beers? They should be classics…
Companies acting like this disgust me. People supporting these companies disgust me even more.
Based on what? It’s their business what they pay their employees. If they don’t pay them fairly, they will lose their best employees to more attractive opportunities, or the employees can bargain for better wages.
Although I must say, Deadliest Catch is my favorite show.
Im against you if you’re with a union. And I am proud of it!
Then you are an outcast minority in this town, you are probably “unhireable”
How come the article doesn’t mention they walked off the set in the middle of production, shutting it down? Or is that what “voted to seek union representation” means in Deadline speak? To walk off the job ambushing production?
These unions don’t give a hoot about the workers. All they want is to replenish their bankrupt PH and W funds so the fat old retirees don’t have to go back to work (Dyan and Trachenberg get paid based on their ability to organize – so they do it to keep their 300K jobs in tact.)
Well said. The unions don’t care about the workers. The unions recently increased the amount of hours needed to make benefits and pension. I’m sure a crew member on 1000 Ways to Die can’t make those many hours on the lack of days that show probably has scheduled throughout the year. Then what? The show doesn’t get picked up for another season because it is no longer affordable and all the crew members are out on their asses with no job and not enough hours to get benefits or pension. And for what, so the unions can make some short term profits to attempt to fill the gaping losses projected for their benefits. Then, most likely not be there to help find all these new members/old members jobs when 1000 Ways to Die gets cancelled.
Original Productions, may look and act like a company that can’t afford to pay union wages or rather human wages… but they are totally owned and controlled by the multi-billion dollar conglomerate Fremantle.
Fremantle is Europe’s largest tv production provider and is also widely known to be anti-union. They built their wondeful reputation on cheap, very cheap shows. Even by the corrupt union standards of HOLLYWOOD, Original exploits cheap labor and makes huge profits in the process.
Unions were at their very height when JFK was President, when in 1962, 40% of American labor was union. Today that union figure is 6% -and still dropping. When JFK was taken out, everything changed for the worst. HOLLYWOOD is richer now than in its entire history, but HOLLYWOOD labor is at its poorest. At best, the unions get 2% pay raises when the “real” inflation factor is 11%. Unless all the unions stick together and call industrywide strikes that would shut down everything immediately, then you wouldn’t have such non-union shows like Originals. The studios violate the contracts every day, whereas the unions are prohibited from striking. Its all one-sided. Union members need to get more involved! Because the way its going now, it’ll all be non-union, or rather low paying union with no one dare asking for benefits!
Unions are a thing of the past. Now they just make workers lazier and demanding more. No one can afford that outrages wages these people want and ask for, that’s why they go non union. Aside from showbiz unions, look at something like the teachers union? What have they done to hire back the thousands of teachers laid off in LA? Substitutes who are still working for their job in LAUSD still have to pay into the union which has done nothing to get them their full time job. All unions really care about is aligning themselves with government officials. They could care less about their “minions”.
Unions got too greedy and ask for too much. There are people out there willing to work without them and fight for their own rights.
I think “f” said it right. Not sure what good it will be for these crew members to join the union. That means they will not be able to work on any non-union show ever again. Which means they’ll join the thousands of unemployed union workers who have lost their jobs, many to run-away production in other states. These unions will love to grab the union dues but most workers will not see any benefits for paying them. These shows are on the air because they’re cheap to both the production company & the network. There is a place in this world for non-union production that provide content to the cable networks.
If you are stupid enough to think Social Security is going to be around for years to come you are truly an idiot. And to base your retirement around it scary. Obama care, what a joke.
Spoken like a non union minimum wage worker…….
With The Affordable Care Act the joke will be on cheap bastards like you RB who have no Healthcare and who don’t bother to buy insurance. Soon you will be mandated by LAW to do so, and then you will stop freeloading on the rest of us who have policies. And then when you see how horrible buying private Healthcare in, instead of getting on a real group plan like in a union (or from a company that will actually pay it to you) then you will wish you were in a union.
Unions= safe hours and working conditions
Unions= decent health insurance in a very unhealthy business.
Unions= allow for a livable wage that improves local economies.
For all those commenting here about how the Unions should stay out, I say “You’re not getting shit for your work, obviously.”
I did. I acted in one of the apparently most memorable enough segments on 1000 Ways to Screw Actors, and the show for which I got paid the grand sum of $100. has aired at least a hundred times. For which the royalties I received were… $0.
Background Acting is referred to as “Hollywood Unemployment” and I’ve received more in most days as Bg than I did for my speaking role for “Original [re]Productions.”
That is what Unions are for.
If the show is cheap but generates sufficient revenue for the network and the production company, why not compensate those below the line instead of just the executives already making much much more them? It’s the right thing to do and unfortunately not many people do the right thing and that’s why we need unions.
