Universal has just released its first trailer for The Bourne Legacy, the Tony Gilroy-directed spinoff of the studio’s blockbuster Bourne Identity series. This time, Jeremy Renner takes center stage as the protagonist. Coming off The Hurt Locker and Mission: Impossible–Ghost Protocol, Renner’s growing into action hero mode. Will the film measure up to the original trilogy that starred Matt Damon? Well, Gilroy’s writing in boiling down Robert Ludlum’s novels into such compelling films was as much the backbone of the series as Damon’s performance as Jason Bourne, or the efforts of directors Paul Greengrass and Doug Liman. Here’s the trailer:

Jesus Matt Damon looks old and ugly in that trailer
Sandra made me do a coffee spit take. hahaha
By old and ugly, do you mean outrageously hot and manly? Haha, to each their own, I guess. I will be drooling at the front row of this movie.
he defntly wasnt in the trailer. its a whole new guy
That’s because it’s not Matt Damon…..
*whoosh!* Right over your head!
Huge fan of Damon and Greengrass and previous Bourne films. Thought only they should continue this franchise.
But, it does appear that Renner and Gilroy may have done this right. I will see this film.
Greengrass almost ruined the franchise. Bourne Supremacy was damn near unwatchable thanks to his shaky-cam BS, and the fight scenes were ridiculously cut. The fight and stunt choreographers shit all over Greengrass, because his frenetic quick-cuts basically ruined scenes they’d spent months rehearsing and setting up. Thank god the studio reined him in (how often does anyone say THAT?) on Ultimatum, which turned out to be the best of the bunch.
Those fight and stunt men should be thanking Greengrass that his style got people more excited about this franchise than ever before and got them even more work for the sequel and then the Bond franchise. Almost ruined the franchise? He took the franchise to greater heights than could ever be imagined. You do realize the second movie alone did better than pretty much any Bond film released in the US right?
If anything people left the second movie amped and excited to see Ultimatum later on. Greengrass helped make the franchise even bigger and more popular than ever. How many franchises can you name where each successive sequel was better reviewed and did better business than the one before? Greengrass did the second and third and that is almost unprecedented for a modern blockbuster Hollywood franchise. You have no idea what you are talking about.
You’re probably also one of those morons online that thinks Nolan ruins the Batman movies the way he shoots and edits the fight scenes. Yup. No one should watch Dark Knight or Dark Knight Rises because the way Nolan shoots the combat scenes is awful.
well said gentleman. 100% agree.
First, you need to calm down ‘TheTruth’.
Secondly, NotQuiteRight is FAR from alone in his opinion that the shaky-cam style in Supremacy was absolutely horrible. Just go to Amazon dot com and search through the one and two star reviews of Supremacy. MANY people HATED the way that movie was shot and edited. Ultimatum was much improved, though still not nearly as good as Identity. I love action, and even violent, aggressive, bloody, dark action. But when I saw Supremacy in the theater, I literally had to look away from the screen a couple of times because I was dizzy — this coming from someone who loves roller coasters, fast cars, and again…action movies.
And lastly, for the life of me I can’t understand how you would equate the awful, ridiculously bad shaky camera work of the Bourne Supremacy with the absolutely wonderfully shot and edited movie the Dark Knight (not sure how you’re even comparing it to the Dark Knight Rises since it hasn’t been released yet). Nothing about camera work in The Dark Knight was nauseating the way the Bourne Supremacy was. There were a couple of fight scenes where Batman was like a ghost, but it wasn’t difficult to watch the way both the hand-to-hand combat and car chase scenes were in Supremacy (oh my god…that car chase scene was just about the most poorly edited action sequence I have ever scene).
First of all I won’t calm down.
Second of all, no one gives a crap about comments on Amazon.com. You say many people, but look at the results. 81% on RT (89% from the audience). $176 million domestic box office. Now think about that. The first movie only did about $122 million domestic. This far outperformed the first movie. And the third movie even outdid that both domestically and abroad as well as with the critics. WHEN DOES THAT EVER HAPPEN?
If the complaints from people like YOU Wicked or NotQuiteRight were with their salt that wouldn’t have happened.
MANY PEOPLE HATED blah blah blah. Many to me sounds like a handful of whiny nit pickers. Obviously it wasn’t that many since the third movie did even better business.
I had no problem with the way the action was shot. They did something different and I was always able to tell what was going on. It wasn’t just the action but the whole movie had a grittier, more active look and style to it. It kept me on my toes. Same thing with Ultimatum. Style didn’t seem much different there either. The main differences are really between the first and second which you can visibly tell are done by different directors. But the mark of Greengrass only made these films stronger.
The complaints of stunt men are meaningless. These movies were a hit and Greengrass coming onto the franchise was the best thing that could’ve ever happened to it. If Greengrass didn’t come on then the stunt coordinator probably doesn’t get a job working on James Bond. If the stunt coordinators don’t like then become a director and shoot and choreograph an action movie the way you think it should.
I bet the movie is good, great cast, but that trailer was kinda weak. The whole first half was annoying.
looking forward to 2 more hours of drop-kicks and punch-outs. i think gilroy is a great writer — i just wish we’d see more Michael Claytons and less Bournes. a minority view, i realize.
Folks, that is how you craft a compelling trailer.
Loved Damon/Greengrass, but I’m on board with this 100%.
Nah. Not having it. Matt Damon is the only Jason Bourne, IMHO.
He’s not playing Jason Bourne. That’s the whole point of the tagline: “There was never just one.”
An impressive cast, a great writer who’s proved himself a more than capable director, alright. I’ll give it a shot. I may miss Matt Damon’s presence that question a “Bourne” movie without Bourne, but maybe this has a chance.
Jeremy Renner is awesome! Sure, he’s not as attractive as Matt Damon but he’s got the chops to be Bourne.
Seems like the trailer was made to convince the cast and the Universal honchos that this was a good idea.
Come on Mike, you should know enough about this industry to know how to give credit where it’s due. The cornerstone of the early Bourne’s was not just Gilroy’s scripts, even Damon said the 3rd one was weak, but it’s the action.
Dan Bradley, directed the 2nd unit on #2 and #3 and created the action that defined this franchise. He’s back on this one and in my opinion is the reason it will be worth watching. Not Greengrass – hello, anyone see Green Zone?
FYI – Dan Bradley worked on GREEN ZONE as well.
$95 mill worldwide? No. No one saw Green Zone.
Looks great.
At the end of the (presumed) new trilogy, we should see Damon and Renner fight to the death. Otherwise, I don’t care about this at all. Bourne – Damon = stupid.
Very good trailer and now I’m officially on board with this film. I’m a big fan of the previous 3 Damon/Greengrass films and I was alittle hesitant when I heard both of them won’t be back for this. Now after reading what Tony Gilroy is doing with this film and seeing this trailer, I’m ready for it.
Matt Damon isn’t getting replaced and he did express interest in returning in the future. This is a nice spin off and would be really exciting to see both Renner and Damon in the next one
A meeting up of Renner’s and Damon’s characters at some point in the future would be awesome. A movie starring the pair of them facing off would be a fantastic end-game for the series – maybe movie #6 overall.
Welcome back Ed Norton… you’ve been missed on the big screen. I’ll see anything with Norton, one of the best actors of his generation IMHO.
Can’t wait.
“It’s like Hanna, but with boys.” -Milhouse
As far as the poster tag “There never was just one” – we already know that. The original trilogy featured many assassins like Jason Bourne, including the one played by Clive Owen. Still, I’m a sucker for this series, though Damon will be missed. Also, I’ve been a Renner fan since the all-too-brief TV series, ‘The Unusuals.’
I’ll see it too, but it does seem to lack the frenetic energy of the original and the later two, but, we shall see. Fan of all involved.
Renner’s a good actor, but not a movie star.
I would have rather seen Ed Norton in the lead.
Wooooooowwwwwwwwww
Love them. Can’t wait
That’s a great trailer. May not end up being a great movie, but under no circumstances is that not a great trailer.
First The Avengers sacrifices continuity to get Edward Norton OUT of the damn movie, and now he’s playing second fiddle in Bourne 4?
I know this is a big movie and everything, but Norton was shaping up to be Jack Nicholson or Johnny Depp. As it stands, he’s not even halfway to Nicolas Cage.
Is Norton really that much of a bastard?
Obviously, the ultimate would be Renner v. Damon… I would watch that all day.
ITAWY~ Seeing Renner and Damon working together would be great!!
I think it looks BEYOND COOL. What a great way of carrying on this franchise. Renner looks rugged and up to the task. He’s certainly a solid actor…will be cool to see what Gilroy does with it directorially. I am so there.
