EXCLUSIVE: I’ve just learned that JJ Abrams and his Bad Robot production banner partnered with EVP Bryan Burk are one of, and perhaps the, most important relationships at Paramount. So this is no surprise. But betcha the terms were rich indeed to extend their first-look deal through the end of 2015. The deal dates back to 2006. Grosses on Mission: Impossible – Ghost
Protocol are now $670M globally while those for the Star Trek reboot hit $385M worldwide. Abrams is right now shooting the Star Trek sequel which he’s producing and directing. Under the Paramount deal, Abrams also has made Cloverfield (producing) and Super 8 (producing and directing), both of which did well at the global box office.
UPDATE: Here’s the official press release -
HOLLYWOOD, CA (February 22, 2012) – Paramount Pictures, a unit of Viacom Inc., and Bad Robot Productions jointly today announced an extension of their exclusive, first-look agreement through December 2015.
The prolific production company, whose original first look deal with Paramount began in 2006, is currently shooting the next installment of the studio’s Star Trek franchise. Once again, Abrams is directing and Bad Robot is producing the tent-pole, which will be released in 3D on May 17, 2013.
“J.J. is a unique talent and a captivating storyteller,” said Brad Grey, Chairman and CEO of Paramount Pictures. “J.J., Bryan Burk and the whole Bad Robot team are an integral part of Paramount and we’re proud to continue our collaboration. Their pictures have extraordinary resonance around the world and we’re so pleased Paramount will be their home for years to come.”
“Brad, Rob, Adam and the whole Paramount team have given Bad Robot truly incredible support, a fun and smart collaborative environment and access to the best film distribution people in the business. I couldn’t be happier knowing that Bad Robot features will remain at Paramount,” said Abrams.
Bad Robot’s previous project with Paramount was “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.” The film, which was produced by Bad Robot, to date has brought in over $600 million in global box office revenue. Bad Robot and Paramount’s creative partnership has resulted in great success over the last 6 years. In addition to the above mentioned films, projects between the companies have included: 2006’s “Mission: Impossible III,” 2008’s “Cloverfield,” 2009’s “Star Trek,” 2010’s “Morning Glory,” and 2011’s “Super 8.”

Great, Fox! You got the succesful mastermind behind huge hits like Undercovers, Six grades of separation and the first season of Lost. And meanwhile Alcatraz is tanking…
haters gotta hate
We do. It sucks to see folks failing upwards. You can go ahead and add Revolution to that mix. And you forgot Cloverfield and Super 8.
The man has only made good movies and has rebooted two huge franchises for paramount mission impossible three and star trek. Super eight and cloverfield were also big hits. Its obvious abrams has little to do with network shows he’s just a producer so they can throw his name on advertisements. Kinda like how spielberg seemed to have produced every single movie that came out last year. Im sure he had everything to do with all of those. You need to see what he writes and directs and judge him on that
PRESIDENT MAO- I take issue with you-are you suggesting viewers are leaving Alcatraz? How dare ye? Why,tons of people watch it-mostly everyone! Oh,and as Dr.House himself would say “everybody lies”-including me! Alcatraz-please go away s-o-o-n…
JJ Abrams’ track record in TV is sketchy, he’s no wizard. Lindelof and Cuse were responsible for the elements that made Lost so successful.
And why didn’t both Abrams and FOX know that Alcatraz would tank? It’s a boring procedural with the mythology elements doled out with an eyedropper. That should have been obvious even at the script level.
I’ve started just fast-forwarding through most of it in the dim hope that there might be an interesting scene or two each week…but considering the ratings, they’ll never get around to much development, so I might as well just bail entirely now.
FOX should have gone for Locke & Key instead.
Here here.
I can see it coming: “It’s about the characters, dude. Not about the answers”. Bye bye, Alcatraz.
Isn’t their deal w/ Paramount just for film. Don’t they have a deal elsewhere for TV?
It takes more than one person to build a successful show, and more than one to cause a show to tank. JJ deserves credit for all his hard work, say what you will about the shows — because the universal truth in this business is that its all opinion — and there are audiences out there who love what he does. If we could all only say the same. Congrats, JJ.
It is weird how he has so much success with all of his stuff that plays on the big screen, but with his tv productions, it’s hit and miss.
Let’s hand it to JJ Abrams PR rep for keeping him relevant once again. I mean, has this guy EVER done anything actually good or eminently watchable? But I guess I’m blaming the wrong guy – by definition, nothing is watchable on network tv (drama in particular). Some strange version of the Peter Principle.
Great for Mr. Abrams and a very smart (and obvious) move for Paramount! The guy is one of our last “great” directors and it’s good to see a studio actually staying behind quality talent.
i agree. jj’s window of opportunity on tv seems to be fading out. the guy thinks he is so great and that his shit don’t stink like the rest of us. he’s pretentious underneath it all and let’s see how well he fares without lost.
Not sure if some of the posters above even read the article, but this is concerning Bad Robot’s FEATURE deal at Paramount, not his TV deal at Warner Bros. And with the successes of Star Trek and Mission: Impossible (and to a lesser extent Cloverfield and Super 8), it comes as no surprise that Paramount would want to renew that deal.
What will be interesting to see is if Bad Robot reups with Warner Bros. on the TV side when that deal expires later this year. Bad Robot’s WBTV track record has been a mixed bag, but he still garners very lucrative pilot commitments.
