The Office executive producer/showrunner said today that James Spader will not return to the NBC comedy next season. The actor, who parlayed a two-scene appearance at the end of last season as Robert California into a full-season gig, had only signed a one-year deal. “James always wanted this to be a one year arc, and he now leaves us having created one of the most enigmatic and dynamic characters in television,” Lieberstein said. “He’s been a great friend to me and the show, helping us successfully transition into the post-Michael Scott years, and I’m grateful for that.”

I gotta say Robert California had my at attention every time he entered frame. hilarious.
I have loved The Office all these years.
Let’s be honest: This year it’s been a stinking pile of crap.
It’s a totally different show – like a stupid sitcom shot single camera.
It’s not James Spader’s fault – but Lieberstein is fooling himself if he thinks the transition has been ‘successful.’ It hasn’t. And the ratings have been tumbling – the ultimate test of success or failure. Biggest mistake was not trying something bold once Michael Scott left. Sure – it could be risky – but a leaderless cast (even with Spader as at most a recurring guest star, truly a secondary character) is a sure failure as this year has proven.
Stop being in denial Office producers! Get it together – or phone it in and expect the inevitable. Don’t die like 30 Rock has. Go out with dignity!
Hank, I couldn’t agree more.
Spader has been a useless addition to the show — but truth be told, “The Office” itself needs to come to an end…asap. Everything about it is old, tired and the performers look like they’re going through the motions. Next season ought to be the final one.
Lame. I still love the show. Is that your solution to everything? Give up when things begin to change? Stop watching then. I’m sure youwill be happy with New Girls or another Sex and the City movie
Spader was the only reason to continue to watch this show, it was a good idea and he is excellent in that role albeit only on occasion.
However now it feels like a promo for the new Dwight spin-off and milking whatever they can. It was a good run.
Spader has been the highlight this season for sure.
I don’t agree with Hank that it’s been a stinking pile of crap but do think a bigger risk would have been better like keeping Spader on as the regional manager.
They bet on Ed Helms, who if you consider his starring roles in both Hangover movies, is one of the biggest comedy stars on Earth, so it makes sense.
But…they need to do something new with the Andy Bernard character. I still like the show, but they need some kind of new angle — the unrequited romance with Ellie Kemper is played out.
Keep in mind that even an off episode of The Office and 30 Rock is better than 20 “on” eps. of Two and a Half Men and The Big Bang Theory.
Ithink it is for the best. He was never meant to be Michael Scott’s replacement, only another colorful character. This frees the show up for some new blood. Because the best part of the office, is how character driven the show is. I am excited to see more new cast members in the future!
