EXCLUSIVE: Jennifer Aniston and Dennis Quaid are in talks to join Ty Burrell, John Hawkes and Yasiin Bey in Switch, the adaptation of the Elmore Leonard novel The Switch that will be directed by Dan Schechter. Aniston is in talks to play Mickey Dawson, and Quaid to play her crooked real estate developer husband. She’s kidnapped and ransomed by two ex-cons (Hawkes and Bey) and when the lowlife husband sees this as a way to get rid of his wife and refuses to pay the ransom, the kidnappers embrace a new opportunity: teaming with a pissed off bombshell housewife to get all of her husband’s money.
The ex-con characters, Louis Gara and Ordell Robbie, are earlier versions of the characters that appeared in Leonard’s Rum Punch, which Quentin Tarantino turned into Jackie Brown. This movie has been described as a prequel, but it is not; Leonard sometimes cross pollinates his books with characters from his past novels. Schechter wrote the script. Gotham Group’s Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and Lee Stollman are producing with Michael Siegel and Leonard. Jim Garavente is executive producer. No deals are done at this point with Aniston and Quaid, but it looks good. Aniston is repped by CAA and Brillstein and Quaid by WME.

Not knocking Elmore Leonard, but wasn’t this the premise for Ruthless People, with Danny DeVito and Bette Midler?
Yeah. Thought it sounded familiar. This is the second news bulletin about supposed Aniston movies that are years off. Same ol Aniston M.O., deflect, deflect from her upcoming horrible rom com dud, by inferring she’s falsely in demand. Hahahaha.
Sounds like a new version of Ruthless People.
Jennifer Aniston must like to star in movies with SWITCH in the title.
Give more than two examples.
I think the fact that she was both the star AND executive producer of THE SWITCH (2010) should count as more than one.
ALSO, her production company is called… SWITCH FILMS!
(OK, I made up that last one.)
Uh, wasn’t this movie made in the 80′s called Outrageous Fortune?
Crap. I meant Ruthless People!!
Yeah, but I liked both!
Congratulations to everyone who’s recognized the plot to Ruthless People. Way to go. You’ve proven to the internet that you’ve seen at least one movie in your life. Now prove to us that you’ve seen more than one and stop acting so shocked when movies made in different decades have similar loglines.
Not sure, but isn’t this the plot to Ruthless People?
Why bother casting Jennifer Aniston? She’s not that talented and I fail to understand why she keeps getting role after role? Meh on this project…I liked Ruthless People but this one sounds like a fail to me…
Aniston is cast as a bombshell housewife? What in the world? LOL
I loved the Divine Miss M in this role with DannyDV, won’t pay a cent to see this warmed over hash of another whiny nasal Aniston constant hair twirling rom com.
Nice job Gotham Group. One of the really innovative out of the box companies around these days. Goldsmith Vein is a force!
this is going to be a very cool movie. gotham group is one of the few innovative progressive companies out there. Goldsmith Vein is a force!! nice job packaging this one!!
Don’t mind Quaid, but the words ‘ cool’ and ‘Jennifer Aniston,’ are not synonymous in any construct. Therefore fail.
Sounds like Ruthless People. Aniston has got to fire her agent and manager. I actually like her and think she has talent but her team isn’t working for her.
Yeah, she just bought a $34 million house. Things really not working out for her, her manager and agent.
Oh, so Jen Aniston, a tv schmoe by trade, bought a 34 mil house? Well excuse us, we were totally mistaken then. I guess that makes her Meryl Streep. Kim Kardsahian made 3x that last year, I guess she’s the next Katherine Hepburn.
Ruthless People was made in the eighties; The Switch was written in 1978.
So, not a remake of Ruthless People, then, but rather an adaptation of an excellent Elmore Leonard novel that predates it.
As for denigrating Aniston, she may not have made any really good choices since Friends ended, but she was superb in both Office Space and The Good Girl. Given a good script and director, there’s no reason at all to believe she couldn’t pull this off.
Yup, this is EXACTLY like “Ruthless People” minus the spandex.
Congratulations to all who recognized the plot similarity of 1978 Elmore Leonard’s book “The Switch” to the 1986 movie “Ruthless People”. You have proven that you a. haven’t read the book, and b. are incapable of running a simple google search.
Actually they are all based on The Ransom of Red Chief, a short story written in the early 20th century.
Elmore Leonard brings characters to life that are flawed, funny and as a reader you just can’t help but relate to. Chili Palmer, Karen Cisco, Raylan Givens…what great parts for any actor to land! I’ll bet Jennifer Aniston is thrilled to be considered and she’ll be great in this, Dennis Quaid, too!
Will not only go see this when it comes out, but will be sure to add it to my Elmore Leonard movie collection!!
Great story Mike! Btw – THE SWITCH was published in 1981 if memory serves me, and Ruthless People came out in 5-6yrs later, so I seriously doubt that Elmore Leonard ripped of their movie!! This is one of my favorite of Leonard’s book’s and what an amazing cast… I can’t wait to see what this one! As for the Aniston “haters” out there, she is perfect to play the role of ‘Mickey’ and think she will be great opposite Dennis Quaid and John Hawkes. GO DUTCH GO!!
This movie sounds dumb. But whats more: why would anyone still cast Dennis Quaid? He’s overrated and has’t he made more than enough total crap movies he’s been making for the past 8 years. Sad sad sad.
Ms. Aniston needs a vacation.
Correction: We ALL need a vacation from Jennifer Aniston. There’s such an air of desperation about her career, it’s depressing.
An “air of desperation about her career”: what insanity! Her 2011 films took in almost half a billion dollars at the worldwide box office, and she was praised in both for her part. She’s got a new film coming out next week that’s been getting great screening buzz. I’m sure there are plenty of actors out there that would take Ms. Aniston’s “desperate career” in a heartbeat!
On top of that Ms. Aniston hasn’t filmed any project since fall 2010. She said she wanted time off and then actually stuck to that. There is no start date for this project and her other new project doesn’t start filming until this summer. She is certainly not bombarding the theaters and if you need a break from her you could simply have opted to not click on this article about her!
Haha, That’s b.s. She filmed her upcoming crap crom with Paul Rudd and her latest rent a date last year, as well as the sandler pic, plus with her constant promotional crap, like exploiting breast cancer victims in that group director project for lifetime, not to mention her begging for award recognition for her last pathetic role in that Bateman comedy vehicle, it’s been nonstop Aniston HYPE and promotion AS USUAL almost every year for a decade. She gets mileage because shes worked the victim card for that long, its strategy. Im in the business, so i know, She’s got the biggest power pr flack in Hollywood, and he’s worked his a$$ off for his share of her tv residuals and endorsements for YEARS, she’s his cash cow and he’ll keep promoting her personal life and appealing to her ‘team’ of sad sacks..to delude people into thinking she’s hot, or in demand. But it’s all smoke and mirrors, her appeal depends on others being resentful and envious in support of her, that’s why there’s such an exhausting, desperate element to her promo junkets, and her overall life in general.
That would require having a life. She’s hellbent on proving something, which is unfortunate for the moviegoing public.
Doesnt Aniston have a flopped movie already called The Switch???
She really does movies for the money only, she doesnt care to be just doing those crapppy comedies and her fans still hope for her to win the Oscar. lol!
Love Jennifer Aniston! Really good and funny actress. She is so underated. She deserves more credit. There are so many jealous people of her sucess. I’d love to see her in a romantic tear jerker. Loved her opposite Gerard Butler.
I assume a title change is in order? I can’t imagine they’d release a second movie starring the same woman with the exact same title. That would severely confuse the general moviegoing public.
Wow. Aniston has signed onto two projects that are not rom-coms. Color me interested for once.
I don’t see all the hate for Jennifer. She has made a number of terrible career choices but she is a capable actress and she have proven that (albeit only a few times).
Will someone please inform those in power that we don’t want to see Jen Aniston in any more movies? She is continually box office poison, yet she is given script after script! Can’t some agent find her some new tv show on some obscure cable channel so she’ll stop invading the multiplexes??!
Maybe you need to be informed that you obviously don’t speak for the movie-going public who spent nearly a half billion dollars globally at the box office in 2011 to see Ms. Aniston’s films.
You can dislike her as an actress, that’s your choice, but she is most certainly NOT “continually box office poison.” Check her numbers as they don’t lie. She rarely loses money for studios, even at the box office level, and her films generally make additional good bank on DVD and TV sales.
So tired of people thinking their opinions speak for the masses.
If I see this nonsense one more time from Aniston’s enabling camp, lol – saying people spent ‘half a billion globally,’ and leaving out the part where she plays the gf/wife etc, of a Adam Sandler, or Ben Stiller, or Jim Carey back in his day,…if you’re using that criteria, why not cast Elizabeth Banks, or Leslie Bibb or Julie Bowen, THEIR films have ‘grossed a half billion,’ too….I’m sure the fact that they Were in Adam Sandler or Ben Stiller movies had nothing do with it. Every movie Aniston attempts to open on the strength of her name alone, iis a critically panned dud at the box office. She sucks and you Know it, the end. Aniston’s been a high profile celebrity for, other things besides acting, for a good decade or more now. So she sells tabloids and magazines. That’s the extent of it. It’s fine she has loads of dough, but Jessica Simpson has more – so I’d rather see her in a movie than Aniston at this point.
Jennifer Aniston is in demand because her smile lights up the room. Cute and clever jen and Dennis will be a great team! Having met them both I have to say what a fun project can’t wait
