Jesse Eisenberg and Mia Wasikowska have joined the Richard Ayoade-directed The Double with shooting to start this spring in the U.K. Inspired by Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s classic novella, the story centers on an insignificant man driven to near breakdown by the appearance of his doppelganger. Submarine helmer Ayoade
co-wrote the script with Avi Korine. Alcove Entertainment’s Amina Dasmal and Robin Fox are producing with Andy Stebbing to co-produce. The U.K.’s Film4 is co-financing while Protagonist Pictures has international sales and will begin meetings on the project at the EFM in Berlin next week.

Wasn’t Roman Polanski supposed to do this in the late 90s? If I remember correctly, he had a star cast including John Travolta and John Goodman, and it was to be shot by Robert Richardson. But then Travolta backed out at the last minute over script concerns and it fell apart..
Travolta didn’t back out because of script concerns, he backed out because he’d been pushing Scientology to Polanski who quipped something like “I already have enough troubles, I don’t need to join a cult.” Travolta was so angry he left the shoot about 2 weeks before production started and refused to return to Paris for the shoot. Travolta got sued by Mandalay (the producer at the time) but ultimately settled. It was an interesting time.
Sorry Dostoyevsky, but Vampire Diaries is in charge of the word doppelganger now.
Can’t wait. Richard Ayoade is a serious talent. Loved Submarine. This could be creepy but will keep the comic and intellectual paranoia that Dostoyevsky created. Ace
Perfect Blue already did it.
I bet the doppelganger is Michael Cera
