Standup comedian and actor Jim Gaffigan announced tonight on Twitter (@JimGaffigan) that he would release his new one-hour comedy special Jim Gaffigan: Mr. Universe as an unencrypted download on his website, http://www.jimgaffigan.com. He said he was “inspired by the brilliant Louis C.K.” who released his own download of Live At The Beacon Theatre in December. The special produced and funded by Jim and Jeannie Gaffigan will be taped in Washington DC on February 25, and is targeted for release in April. Gaffigan, who has appeared in numerous TV episodes and a handful of movies, is currently touring. Marketing his comedy directly to fans, Gallican also said he would donate $1 to the Bob Woodruff Foundation for every $5 download. The foundation supports injured service members, veterans and their families. In his Tweet, Gaffigan was philosophic. “If no one buys the special or if lots of people steal it then I suppose I will lose a lot of money and have egg on my face. But then again I have four kids, so I am always losing money and usually have egg or some kind of food on my face so it might just feel normal.”

This is a fantastic way to sell your product and one step into the future. I bought Louis CK’s show, and I’ll make sure to buy this one.
Also: I truly and honestly believe that one day, there will be one bold movie / TV studio who’ll sell shows and movies like this – no DRM, totally compatible files, no unskippable commercials / FBI messages.
And I think they will make tons of cash.
Bravo. As long as you keep the cost for content low, you’ll lower the number of people stealing it. Is anyone in Hollywood listening? If movies weren’t DRM’ed to death and lower in price, I would ditch physical media and would download or stream.
It’s official, the inmates are running the asylum, and I luv it. The future is now.
I imagine Gaffigan and Louis CK will rake in some ancillary dough if/when they license their specials to Netflix, iTunes, Hulu, Comedy Central, etc. Even a premium pay channel might be interested in such specials as a “television premiere” if not a “world premiere.”
If I’m not mistaken, Radiohead made headlines by selling “In Rainbows” exclusively from their website. But today, you can get it on iTunes. Eventually, it’s win-win for everyone.
This is great news. I cannot wait to buy it.
Gaffigan and Louis CK are two of my favorite comedians, and the way they are championing this is really exciting.
I think MPAA, RIAA types are going to see really quickly that the problem isn’t people wanting to steal. The problem is people expect new technologies to actually give them convenience and lower costs.
Thank you Mr. Gaffigan!
