EXCLUSIVE: Better With You star JoAnna Garcia Swisher is set as the female lead in CBS’ untitled Greg Malins/Greg Berlanti comedy pilot, reuniting with Better With You executive producer/co-showrunner Malins. The multi-camera project, from Warner Bros. TV and studio-based Berlanti Prods., centers on Nick who has a health scare and realizes that Wendy (Garcia Swisher), his best friend and business partner of 15 years, is ‘the one’. Now he has to figure out how to break it to her. Malins and Berlanti wrote the script and executive produce. This marks the third consecutive WBTV pilot for Garcia Swisher following Privileged and Better With You, both of which went to series. She also did an arc on the studio’s CW drama Gossip Girl. It also marks the latest multi-camera comedy for Garcia who started off on the WB’s Reba. Earlier this season, Garcia was attached to a Warner Bros. TV multi-camera comedy project written by Better With You creator/exec producer Shana Goldberg-Meehan. The family comedy sparked a bidding war before landing at ABC with a production commitment but ultimately didn’t go to pilot, making WME-repped Garcia Swisher available. She immediately received multiple offers, choosing the Malins/Berlanti pilot.

Now that we know Garcia’s pilot at ABC is dead, has anyone heard the status of the Shawn Levy/ Mandy Moore pilot at ABC? It sounded promising.
I’m mad that her pilot at ABC is dead, but I’m happy that she is in another pilot for CBS! I hope this is the hit that she has deserved after her fantastic run on Reba!
Read the script. It won’t be.
Every casting director in town has been claiming she is doing their show. Glad to see this is finally settled.
I hope for her sake they are shooting in NYC as she is married to NY Yankee Nick Swisher.
“Read the script. It won’t be.”
That’s pretty harsh, Silveri.
if she didn’t appear “white” – this actress would not be given so many opportunities
no offense to her personally – so please don’t take this as a disparaging remark against her
but as a Latina actress – I wonder how many times she’s been offered the role of maid, gangbanger/ barrio girl/ chola “type” or any other numerous negative stereotypes that most dark-skinned Latina/os are offered and feel they must take or just not work in the industry ?
or better yet – why not create characters for JoAnna Garcia Swisher – who like her – happen to be Latina ? may be cast her & Julie Gonzalo (another blonde) as Latina sisters ?
“I’d rather play a maid than be one” — Hattie McDaniels
that’s a fairly meaningless reply – as most actors (at any level of experience) would rather “play” anything – rather than be one – ie. most actors will say – “I’ld rather play a lawyer than be one” or “I’ld rather play a scientist than be one” ….. as most major or successful actors (which is everyone’s goal to become) would rather have the work, lifestyle and income of a being an actor than the real-life professions they portray – be it maid …. office drone …. or lawyer/ doctor/ politician, etc
some actors pursue the dream for the artistic passion & others for the fame, money, etc – but all actors want to ACT & when they tire of it – then like anyone else they pursue other goals
the point of my original comment and this reply is to point out the inequities that many actors of color – especially Latina/o actors face in lack of opportunities in casting due to looks/ skin color, etc
what actors of color want is for the opportunities to audition for & simply be considered for roles that shouldn’t matter what ethnicity or appearance they have
why not ask Meryl Streep has she ever considered or been offered to play a maid role & if not – why are those roles never offered to her ?
Streep was turned down to play the role of a maid in the movie, The Remains of the Day.
Why the need to point out that Garcia gets it easier than other Latino stars? She’s not hiding her racial background and if she can play a role, let her play a role whatever that race that character is. She doesn’t owe anyone anything.
Man, you need to keep it real. Joanna Garcia looks likes Joan Garland. She looks like a white girl, sounds like a white girl. The fact that her parents or grandparents may have come from a place where they speak Spanish as a first language doesn’t mean that she is not a white girl.
That’s like saying Dominican actors are not black because they speak Spanish. Now if you want Joanna to be in some show representing the Latino culture, then ask someone to create a vehicle for her in that lane. She’s an actor, she reads parts. She’s not a creator or a producer.
