EXCLUSIVE: John Cusack and Evan Peters have joined Emma Roberts in Adult World, a film that has just begun production in upstate New York through TreeHouse Pictures and Anonymous Content. Scott Coffey (Elle Parker) directs from the script by Andrew Cochran. “Adult World examines the contemporary state of post-graduate life in America,” said TreeHouse Pictures president Justin Nappi. “This is a smart satirical comedy that will resonate with a lot of people.”
Roberts plays 21-year old Amy Anderson, a recent college graduate with a degree in poetry. Convinced she is the next star in the literary world, moves back with her parents to write poetry — but with a stack of rejection letters, unpaid student loans, and no money, her parents force her to get a “real job.” The only place that will hire her is an erotic bookstore called Adult World. Cusack plays Rat Billings, Amy’s hero and mentor who was one of the greatest poets of the early ’90s. Peters, memorable in the first season of American Horror Story, stars as Manny. CAA reps the actors. Producers are Justin Nappi and Kevin Turen and Anonymous Content’s Joy Gorman and Alex Goldstone will also produce with Manu Gargi. TreeHouse Pictures’ most recent film Arbitrage, starring Richard Gere and Susan Sarandon, premiered at 2012 Sundance and was acquired by Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions.
TreeHouse Pictures is also producing the J.C. Chandor-directed All Is Lost with Robert Redford starring and Lionsgate releasing stateside. They are also currently in post on the untitled Ramin Bahrani film starring Zac Efron and Dennis Quaid.

I read on Deadline earlier that Emma Roberts left her last film due to ‘Creative differences’
Whilst this isn’t uncommon for established actors, it seems like an odd thing for someone so young to do. Does this mean she’s difficult?
Great script. I read it years ago and it always stayed with me. Congrats to all involved.
Does this film suggest that Adult films can or cannot be poetic?
Sincere congrats to Alex at Anonymous Content.

I read the script a couple of years ago. Kind of silly and dumb but Scott Coffee substantially rewrote it since then. And it’s much better now. I hope Emma Roberts steps up.
don\’t know anything about the writer other than the sweet 16 thing was awful. But the direct, scott coffee(y)?, has genius potential judging by the short Ellie Parker–which was unequivocally brilliant. The expanded version is… kinda brilliant (i guess), but suffers from a slight onerousness and a proclivity toward a trifle of pretentiousness. (which, dude, read the last sentence, i suffer from too.) If he can avoid this, he could be in line for some directing laurels. He\’s an awesome actor, it remains to be seen if he\’s an awesome director as well.
I bet this original screen play is good, it is a satirical comedy and has a message, if it was rewritten the point will
more than likely be missed. i have heard of the writer, he was 23
when he helped mtv write a screen play after a story that was given him. everybosyhas to start somewhere. that ellie whatever was hard to watch.
this is an original screenplay, which is very good. has a message which college grads will GET.. if you are NOT a college grad. you will probably not GET it. and/or rewrite it.
Cannot WAIT for this movie. I had the random good fortune to be Andy Cochran’s neighbor (the writer) back when he was writing and first sold this script. I read it early on and loved it. It was hilarious and touching. Showed a depth of emotional knowledge that’s rare for such a young writer (now I sound like a pretentious critic or something). But in short it was awesome and entertaining, and I’m psyched to see it’s being made with some good actors.
Ha ha. Sally must be the writer of Teen Wolf.
I have the original script from a few years ago. It’s pretty shitty. It’s a wanna be Legally Blond rip off with creepy misongist undertones. That writer is kind of a hack. Coffee will fix this I bet. Ellie Parker is pretty great if slight and kind of stretched out.
echk. ellie parker is unwatchable. i couldn’t finish. hopefully this movie isn’t as terrible.
this script has been around forever with different directors and actors attached. the only reason it got made now was because of the big rewrite that scott coffey did. that’s what got cusack involved in the project. that role was originally written as an old lecherous creep. coffey re wrote it as a more interesting character.
Am I the only one before reading about Emma Roberts working in an adult store who thought of this film being ‘Post Grad’, the after graduating from college film that starred Alexis Bledel?
ok. yeah “scott did improved it”. obvious typo. typed quick and didnt check. but this is going to to be an awesome movie!
what is “post grad”?
Unfortunately, I’ve read the shooting script and it is garbage. I was told that it was supposed to be making fun pretentious hipsters?? I said “hmm, interesting,” but from what I can tell, its a hipster flagship. Every SINGLE ruddy CHARACTER in the movie quotes poetry??? In what nightmarish world would that happen?? Seriously. SOOO pretentious. “oh, you like Bukowski?? If i’m not mistaken, he once said: ‘this movie will suck balls’”
This film is college freshman pretentious on crack.
Read the original script and loved it!
Some favors must have been granted to get the unknown Coffy on board. I haven’t seen his short film, but then.. Who did?
