EXCLUSIVE: Actor-comedian John Leguizamo has signed a development deal with ABC and ABC Studios. Under the pact, Leguizamo will star in and executive produce a single-camera comedy inspired by his professional, personal and family life in New York City. This would be the first comedy series for Leguizamo who previously co-starred on ER and The Kill Point and toplined the 2006 CBS drama pilot Edison. Search is underway for a writer to pen the comedy project, which will likely be developed off-cycle given the timing of the deal. Leguizamo will executive produce with his longtime manager Jeff Golenberg of the Collective as well as Mandeville’s David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman. Leguizamo is re-teaming with Mandeville after working with the company on Edison. He is not obligated to do an ABC pilot this season but will be exposed to some and could do one. Leguizamo is currently touring the country with his fifth one-man show, Ghetto Klown, following a successful summer run on Broadway. One of his previous stage shows, Freak, was televised by HBO and earned him an Emmy Award. Leguizamo, repped by UTA and attorneys Jason Sloane and Harris Hartman, recently completed the indie feature Fugly, which he wrote and starred in, and can be seen opposite Katherine Heigl in One for the Money.

Always excited for a Leguizamo project!
IMHO-John can be very funny-extremely funny at times.I still remember his show waaaay waaaaaay back on Fox. I think it was called “House of Buggin’” & Luis Guzman was on it with him. However, this will be a situation type comedy-we’ll see how it goes.Personally,I wish him lots of luck. I’ve also seen him in many movies, mostly in supporting roles,& damn-this man can hold his own among many of today’s actors. If anyone can make this show work-it’s John. The guy is very energetic,so,if the show fails-it won’t be for lack of trying. Hope it does well.Thank you.
Kudos!
Very glad that this is going on. Cant wait to see it. Congratulations proud of you. Very Very funny man bringing laughter to everybody. I can always watch him. Thank you John Leguizamo.@onetwotwin. Xoxo
Brilliant guy — worked with him on a pilot for CBS in NYC back in 1990… he was fantastic in the audition — totally killed the part… of course, the director sent him off in the wrong direction; had him play it for drama rather than laughs — oy, vey… Emmy winning TV directors! Ugh… As I write this I cannot believe that it was 22 years ago — John should be a huge star by now. Happy to see him still getting the at bats.
Congrats to ABC for recognizing talent. Leguizamo continues to work his magic and represent Hispanics and all real artists proudly!
Great to hear. John is immensely talented. Just please, John, try and make it mainstream. Don’t give the suits another incentive to not bet on Latinos.
I am so glad to hear this. We need more latin families on tv. I was so sad to see House of Buggin go. Way to go, John!
Yeesh. According to Wikipedia, John Leguizamo has done SEVEN shows about his life. (One of which, Ghettoklown, I had the misfortune of seeing. Not my idea…) Maybe this navel-gazer needs to broaden his choice of material.
Who signs a deal in the middle of pilot season!!!
Awesome a little flavor at ABC. Maybe ABC wants John to star in ” Devious Maids” the Latina maid show.
Will Smiths backed Romero Santos sitcom deal won’t get picked up now. You think ABC would commit to more than one show with Latinos..answer… NEVER!
