EXCLUSIVE: Just 10 days after actor-comedian John Leguizamo signed a development deal with ABC and ABC Studios, he has signed on to star in the ABC/ABC Studios multicamera comedy pilot Only Fools And Horses. Based on the British format, the multicamera comedy chronicles the misadventures of two streetwise brothers, Del (Leguizamo) and Rodney, and their aging grandfather as they concoct outrageous, morally questionable get-rich-quick schemes in their quest to become millionaires. Del, the older brother, is the leader of the team. He is an overly confident bon vivant and con artist who trades crap out of the back of his car, cheerful and oblivious to the fact that he is a lowlife scamster. Steven Cragg and Brian Bradley wrote the adaptation and will executive produce with Leguizamo’s longtime manager Jeff Golenberg of the Collective. As part of Leguizamo’s deal with ABC, if Only Fools And Horses doesn’t go to series, the network will develop a single-camera comedy inspired by Leguizamo’s professional, personal and family life in New York City for him to star in and executive produce. UTA-repped Leguizamo is currently touring with his fifth one-man show, Ghetto Klown.

Why ? What about his autobiographical sitcom in the works? Can you explain why that was abandoned. Would rather see him in single cam
Oh no! Sacrilege!
Multicam comedies are making a BIG comeback, especially on ABC single cam comedies are yesterday’s news. Look at the amount of Multi cam vs. single cam in development this season.
Isn’t Last Man Standing the only multicam currently on ABC? The Middle, Suburgatory, and obviously Modern Family are all locks to be renewed, Happy Endings probably will be, too…all single cam.
Key world was in development, not shows on air, with the exception of Suburgatory, all the show you mentioned are old (on more than one season, Modern Family has been on for 3 seasons.
You had me until Happy Endings.
A great talent. His HBO boxing movie directorial effort, however, was one of the worst things I’ve ever seen.
@Isb No, I wouldn’t say that. What ABC seems to be doing is both which is EXACTLY what every network should do. Both Single cam and Multi cam
Interesting casting.Hiring Leguizamo means they’ll also have to hire latin/hispanic actors for the other parts, too.
did this deal get organized after original writer/creator John Sullivan died or before?
John Leguizamo is an extremely funny man.I wish him the best & hope this goes well for him. But,honestly: I also would prefer the autobiographical show inspired by his life. I wish him much success.
Dear ABC:
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE cancel this idea for pilot and just let John write and create his own inspired show – based on WHATEVER his work.
Ghetto Klown was pure GENIUS – plus let him create latino characters that are both funny, real and in some way inspiring and not stereotypical.
trying doing a poll of the Latino community and just ask what they would want to see him in
save time, money – this pilot does not sound like a winner
Steven and Brian are simply two of the funniest guys I’ve ever been in a room with. So happy for their success. Truly well deserved.
OFAH was a classic back in the day, Del Boy & Rodders are an iconic comedy duo, much loved back in the UK and Ireland. It’ll be interesting to see how the adaptation works out in the US.
Basically, I agree with you diversity-anything involving John would be a hell of a lot funnier if abc let him come with his own thing. Like I said earlier-John is extremely funny ,&, whatever ideas he comes up with on his own stands a much better chance of being extremely funny. It would probably be much funnier than this pilot abc is putting him in. One thing about John:he is at his funniest when given the freedom to do his own thing. Thank you.
As Burkiss stated, this is absolute Sacrilege.
I cannot see how this can work in the US. It is so cliche but why can’t Americans come up with new ideas any more? I’m sure that there are thousands of great scripts which don’t see the light of day because somebody suggest rebooting an already extraordinarily successful format.
This script just isn’t funny. It feels dated and stale. Bring on the Ghetto Klown for TV!!!! We want John!!!
Oh I wish John Sullivan was alive (sigh)
This script could be better.. Not good enough for a talent like leguizamo. Not fresh and exciting as a concept and not funny enough. Give john his own show!! We want his voice!
Leguizamo is a very difficult and mildy talented performer. Have fun, writers!
yes his 5 ultra successful BROADWAY one man shows must suck compared to your stellar work
and if you had a chance to see his most recent show – GHETTO KLOWN – you would know your comment is just plain not true
regardless of what you think of his material – there is no way to say he is not a consummate master actor – who is just coming into his prime as a performer – perhaps now ready to fill in for roles that might have been cast with Raul Julia (may he rest in peace).
Unfortunately….I could care LESS about a show on Leguizamo’s personal life. Do you know outside the industry,(middle America) how many people actually know who this kid is?? Hello?…and this new show? same thought. This is a stale, worn concept with a script that isn’t funny (read it). Afterall, what was his last box office smash? Point made. Very over-rated talent. is this the counter ABC program to “ROB”?
Agreed, diversity. Anyone putting John down just doesn’t see how much this man has grown over the years as an actor, and, as a BROADWAY performer. In films, John holds his own alongside the “bigboys” of acting-he puts an actual effort into the things he does. Like I stated earlier, it would have been much bettet if abc allowed John to come up with his own show and his own ideas because that is when he is at his best. Thank you.
