EXCLUSIVE: Joseph Gordon-Levitt will make his feature directing debut on an untitled comedy he’ll star in with Scarlett Johansson. Gordon-Levitt wrote the script, and Nicolas Chartier’s Voltage Pictures will finance the film and sell international rights in Berlin. Ram Bergman is producing for Ram Bergman Productions in association with Gordon-Levitt’s hitRecord Films. Shooting will start April 16.
While Gordon-Levitt would not give up too many details, I got this much: the film is a sexy comedy about about a modern-day Don Juan, and his quest to become less of a “selfish dick.” He plays that character, and there is another female lead role that will be filled shortly.
The move into the directing chair comes at a time when Gordon-Levitt is coming off the lead role as a cancer-stricken man in 50/50, and when he has a killer dance card for 2012. He stars in The Dark Knight Rises, Premium Rush, Looper and Lincoln, all opening this year.
Getting behind the camera on a feature is hardly a lark. Gordon-Levitt, a child actor whose credits included 3rd Rock From The Sun, became burnt out in his teens and left the business to attend Columbia University and experience life. Lucky for him, when he came back he’d grown into a cross between Heath Ledger and Keanu Reeves, and has turned in strong adult performances in films including The Lookout, (500) Days Of Summer, and Inception. Despite his success, Gordon-Levitt tells me that all along, his major motive for returning was a burning desire to direct.
“I was a child actor for years and quit at 19, went to school awhile, and a big part of why I came back was that I ultimately wanted to make movies,” Gordon-Levitt said. “I spent a year working with Chris Nolan, Rian Johnson, Steven Spielberg, and I did my best to pay attention. I’ve also been making short films for a long time now, I’ve directed a ton of them, and that is a huge part of why I feel comfortable and confident in this.”
Gordon-Levitt’s short film learning curve included an adaptation of Elmore Leonard’s short story Sparks, and Destiny’s Eleventeenth Date: The Zeppelin Zoo, both of which played the festival circuit. He worked on the comedy script for three years, and while he tried others, this was the first that came together, while he was shooting 50/50. “This is the first time I finished a feature film I thought was good enough to make into a movie,” he said. “I’ve written others, including one mammothy huge sprawling thing that encompasses my entire point of view of everything since I was 20 years old.” Those efforts are in a drawer somewhere.
“I wrote myself a helluva role, one that people wouldn’t necessarily thought of me for,” said Gordon-Levitt, who’s braced for the challenge of both directing and starring. Though he’s been acting his whole life, Gordon-Levitt figures there will be an adjustment. Many actors hate watching their own work onscreen and some, like Daniel Day-Lewis, refuse to watch their own films at all. “I’ve thought about that a lot,” he said, “but that’s a big part of what I’ve learned making and appearing in short films. It takes practice to get used to seeing yourself and not being freaked out and self conscious by the sound of your own voice.”
Now that he’s locked financing for his directing debut, the big dilemma facing Gordon-Levitt is whether he’ll be able to keep his plan to play a small supporting role in Django Unchained, Quentin Tarantino’s slave-era drama. “It will be tricky schedule-wise, but I was honest with Quentin upfront,” Gordon-Levitt said. “He was so cool and encouraging. He said, ‘You strike me as the kind of guy who would want to direct,’ and I took that as high praise.” Gordon-Levitt’s repped by CAA, which will sell domestic.

He has come a long way since 30 Rock!
“3rd Rock”
3rd Rock from The Sun.
third rock
my boss had it, it’s a really fun cool script
Reads like a bad episode of the jersey shore…JGL is fantastic, but this isn’t the right project
We cannot be quick to judge with such little information. Only hope that he does his best and takes us all by surprise.
I’ve read the script. It is simply bad. Johanson’s character is unbelievably unlikeable and the script is thin. Love Joe, but we will be disappointed.
Can you send me the script?
Its wonderful to watch an actor, whom you’ve looked up to your whole life, continue to succeed without losing sight of themselves.
Levitt to me is one of those guys Hollywood is in love with because he’s a great actor, but doesn’t actually inspire people to go to the theater en masse. Good for him though.
This pretty much sums up my view of him as well.
JGL as a modern day Don Juan? I don’t see it.
Next time you run into a girl, ask her and she’ll explain it to you.
It’s hard to put into words why we ADORE him.
So excited he’s directing!
JGL is the man….
Oh geez I usually would try and insult this project to bring my peers down, but darnit, this sounds good!
JGL is part of the Michelle Williams and Carey Mulligan club; the new age actor that has about as much screen presence as a wet mop, and a cardboard cut out personality, but because of their indie looks and roots, are considered hip, when in an actual fact, they’re just plain boring.
Nah, they’ve got shit going on. Sorry you can’t see beyond the “boring”.
You are right in a way..at least about ‘the golden children club seen as hip by Hollyweird’ (and don’t forget Ryan Gosling the golden boy right now in this department and i say that while being in love with him, well as much as you can be in love with someone you don’t know..yeah whatever i know..ha ha) but i am also a cynic or a realist if you prefer so i quite agree with you with that.but not about the boring part..for example i can relate to them because they look like me and my friends (and we are not boring damn it ! it is one of the big insult for us, call us ‘asshole’ narcissist whatever you want but not boring please ! lol) and i think lot’s of people feel the same therefore they are liked and successful, moreover it doesn’t hurt that they have talent.
Aaron, I definitely agree about the insufferable and the highly overrated Michelle Williams. She is unbearable in her movies and her tv interviews. And, I still don’t understand the profound love for the charmless Carey Mulligan- at least she tries to portray different roles. But, I disagree about JGL . He is charming and unbelievably talented.
Guess directing runs in the family; his grandfather directed Rock Hudson and Doris Day in “Pillow Talk”!
In no way do I find his performances boring. Personally, I think he’s a wonderful actor. I’m really interested to see how this turns out. I’m not the biggest Scarlett fan. Although she’s incredibly beautiful, I haven’t been too impressed with her since Ghost World. Perhaps it’s only due to the roles she’s taken/been given. I’d like to like her so maybe this role will work out for her. I’m excited to see a new side, professionally, of Joe.
Gost world yep was awesome (where is Thora Birch by the way ? She was the real deal in this movie, not Scarlett) but Lost in Translation was a masterpiece and Bill Murray the beautiful actor..and Matchpoint was also a great Allen movie..i am not really fond of Scarlett Johannson (Kirsten Dunst is so much better in the same type of young actress type) but give her some credits, she made some really great choices in term of movies.
I was just about to write the same damn thing.
She had that incredible year when she rocked in Lost in Translation and Girl with a Pearl Earring, and she had all this indie cred to go along with huge potential and killer looks. But that was nearly 10 years ago. Her acting skill flatlined since then. She either phones it in and gives a predictable, weak performance, or she’s cringe-worthy when she is actually trying (VCB). Maybe I judge her harshly because I thought she was such a talented kid/teen actor, so I inevitably find her consistent lack of versatility disappointing.
Kind of bittersweet news – excited about Gordon-Levitt’s effort (the guy has one of the BEST work ethics and BEST attitudes in Hollywood), but I’m not even sure a good directing effort can make Scarlett interesting.
Good for JGL! Keep striving!
What?! Scarlett?! Why not Zooey?!
Zooey?! Talk about boring.
I really like JGL and think look forward to his point of view as a director.
But, as a fan, a little observation. I hope his character has a different style aesthetic in this film. When he plays modern day characters- they all look cut from the same cloth, in other words… please loose the sweater vest and the leather satchel. This may seem silly to some, but it is beginning to be distracting. He looks great, but at this point his on screen characters are sort of morphing with his off-screen self.
I’m excited for him since I find him very talented. In terms of the female lead, Nina Arianda would be my choice. She can act circles around Johansson and is actually FUNNY. I hope she has a shot at the other female lead – I saw her on stage in Born Yesterday and Venus in Fur, and honestly I haven’t remembered such a talented debut in a long time.
Johansson is fine in a particular niche – however I find her in Woody Allen’s films such a bizarre choice especially in nebbishy roles. The only part I really liked her in was Girl with a Pearl Earring.
JGL comes off a little squirrely for my tastes
This gets a thumbs up so far. Lets just hope the story is as innovative as it sounds. We don’t need anymore, my life as an actor, entourage crap.
JGL impressed me in Hesher. Now I’m truly convinced he isn’t stuck in a box.
I think JGL is an extremely talented actor and I look forward to his directorial debut. That said, I think people here are dead wrong about Michelle Williams, who I think is an amazing screen presence and really gets into her characters, in my estimation. Carey Mulligan is also amazingly talented. I hope this disdain for them and others in this so-called “hip club” of young actors isn’t a case of jealousy. Sure sounds like it is.
JGL’s ambition and commitment to his HitRec site is staggering, as is his ability to inspire others to be creative collaborators. I’m looking forward to this for sure. He definitely strikes me as someone meant to be a director.
I couldn’t agree more. Although I do like JGL. I do not get the hang up on Cari or Michelle.
Do you have details? There is another female lead to be filled as well. I don’t see how it ca be disappointing.
Can’t wait!
Go, JGL, go!
