NBC, 20th TV and Ryan Murphy & Ali Adler have assembled the unconventional family at the center of their comedy pilot The New Normal. The Hangover and National Treasure co-star Justin Bartha has been tapped to star in the single-camera project, along with Scottish actress Georgia King in her U.S. TV debut. The New Normal, co-written by the Glee duo of Murphy and Adler and to be directed by Murphy,
is described as a heartwarming comedy about a blended family of a gay couple, Bryan (Andrew Rannells) and David (Bartha), a gynecologist, and a woman, cash-strapped waitress and mother of one Goldie (King), who becomes a surrogate to help them have a child. Rounding out the principal cast of the pilot is recently cast Ellen Barkin as Goldie’s glamorous/bigoted grandmother. Adler, Murphy and Dante Di Loreto executive produce. This marks Bartha’s return to television and NBC where he starred in the short-lived 2006 comedy Teachers. King is with Paradigm and U.K.’s Rights House.

This was one of the few pilots I enjoyed this season; heartwarming and funny. Congrats to all involved. Looking forward to seeing this one.
Read it and loved it. Hoping this is more Alison’s show than Ryan’s.
Soooo very excited to see this! Cannot wait to catch such a fab cast in action and wonderful to see Miss Georgia King working it in Hollywood!
Surprised at Bartha going to TV. I thought he was angling for movie stardom. Everyone else from The Hangover seems to have parlayed it to bigger things. Better money in TV, I guess.
It’s pretty uncharacteristic to say Bartha was “angling” for movie stardom. If anything, he’s made a conscious effort NOT to pursue a film career following THE HANGOVER. Besides going back to shoot the sequel, he’s mostly been on stage in New York the last two or three years- he did LEND ME A TENOR on Broadway with Tony Shalhoub and Anthony LaPaglia, Zach Braff’s play ALL NEW PEOPLE, and Jessie Eisenberg’s play ASUNSCION (opposite Eisenberg) in pretty consistent succession.
He’s a nice guy, and this is a great script. Smart choice for him.
Not enough Brits on US television we now have to import Scots as well? Don’t forget Wales, Ireland, etc. American actors are not working and believe me I am sure one could be found. Oh, and how many Americans are cast on shows outside the country???????
