EXCLUSIVE: I’m hearing that The Artist star Jean Dujardin will make a surprise appearance on Saturday Night Live in an hour or so. From what I’m told, the producers wanted him, and it was a dream of his to do the show. So he flew in Friday from Paris for rehearsals, and flies right out in the morning to London for the BAFTAs. This is what you go through when you are a frontrunner for Best Actor and the voting closes on February 21. I understand that he does a bit of dancing in his segment on the show in an Artist-flavored edition of SNL‘s recurring Les Jeunes de Paris dancing sketches starring Taran Killam.

Looks like he really is going the Benigni route to charm the voters right before they cast their ballots.
Or it really is a dream of his, apparently he did a bunch of variety shows in france before and after he broke out
Mais oui son temps est arrive. Bon chance!
Jean has a long moustache.
@SoulHonky: Good! Let him charm them. Clooney is great. He was fabulous in the Descendants. Brad Pitt — meh. Dujardin – Out of this frigging world. If he does NOT take home the Oscar, then we all know what we’ve always known;that is, that the Oscars are a big rig.
Give me a break — george clooney runs circles around him in the descendants and I really could not deny it even though I really wanted it to be Leo’s year — but come on — what does jean do that is so special? I don’t even consider the artist to be one of the best of the year.
well i think that says it all…
You don’t know what you’re talking about. A big rig?? You mean when Christoph Waltz ( Austrian), Mariane Cottilard (French), Daniel Day-Lewis ( British), Helen Miriam (British), Colin Firth (British) won? Were those ‘rigged’ against foreigners?? How about the tons of Oscars won by foreign directors and technicians? What is ‘rigged’ is your knee-jerk bias.
Not sure it was his dream to do the show – how would he even have known about it until recently? That sounds like publicists’ spin.
Well, some french people are really into american stuff, I for myself watch a lot of american tv shows (I mean scripted shows), and sometimes I watch Leno or Jon Stewart, so I’m not surprised Jean is a fan of SNL (even if I personally never saw it).
(sorry if my english isn’t perfect!)
Your english is fine. That’s pretty cool that you watch American shows.
I’m French and I love SNL! It doesn’t air in our country but it’s very popular within the entertainment industry and many folks, especially comedians, watch it on the internet. Also, whenever a skit is deemed newsworthy for any reason, it will most likely be talked about on entertainment news shows.
SNL is not only known in America.
I love how Americans still imagine Europeans as backwater types living in the Stone Age when they tend to be as much up to date with popular culture as anybody else.
I’ll let you in on a secret, Internet has recently arrived in Europe! Now if only we could figure out how computers work.
Huh?? Americans LOVE it when Europeans win fima awards !! What on earth are you talking about? Did you see the reaction when Christoph Waltz won the Oscar?? How about when Marianne Cottilard won? How about when Dujardin won the Golden Globes? You simply don’t know what you’re talking about.
He’s from France, not Mars, and SNL has been on since 1975 so I think it’s quite possible some from another continent just might have heard of it?
Really? You don’t think French people, (especially big stars)know about Saturday Night Live? Are you kidding me?
Looking forward to the show now.
Not really a surprise anymore…
i wish the bulk of the out of touch academy could stay up late enough to see what a one trick pony he is, and reconsider the gimmicky movie too, but, like sheep, they’ve already been led.
sad
Lemme guess — you produced one of the many unworthy films getting nominated this year?
‘The Artist’ was hands down the best film of the year — it’s shame what drivel gets consideration these days. Clooney, Von Trier, the team behind ‘The Help’ — they should all hang their heads for what they put up.
No it wasn’t (best picture of the year). Saw it today in Iowa City, IA (along with “The Grey” & “Safe House”). He was good. She was good. Movie was good. But it’s incredibly overrated. Didn’t leave any kind of lasting impression (whereas two which definitely did -”Warrior” & “Dragon Tattoo”- were overlooked). I also liked “The Descendants” more than “Artist.” It was just a good movie. Not special. It does have the Weinstein Oscar PR team in full force behind it though.
1000% disagree.
10,000 percent agree, i honestly don’t get the love for the artist — so overrated, and bordering on being a bore. Bernice was great but come on this is such a fluff movie with no substance, even bridesmaids, a movie that I hated, had more substance. You fooled by the black and white and the link to the past — what is it seriously?! This is not the best picture of the year, not even in the top 9 — drive, descendants, the help — all better movies.
LOL. Somebody’s bitter because they’re working on a failing campaign…
So let me get this straight: If the Academy selects Dujardin then they’re out of touch and can’t see that he’s a ‘one trick pony’. But if they don’t select him then that proves the Academy is biased against foreign stars, even though foreign stars, directors and technicians have won tons of Oscars. Do I have this right?
He must be exhausted by flying all the way all the time. :p
THIS GUY, JEAN, IS GOING TO BE A BIG MOVIE STAR…&..ALREADY SUCCESSFUL IN FRANCE, JEAN HAS “QUALITY X”…………I MET HIM & HE RADIATES “STARDOM”………..GLAD TO HAVE SEEN “THE ARTIST”……..A GREAT FILM……& EVERYONE DID A GREAT JOB……..BRAVO!…………..JACK ENGLISH………FILM & TV….& ACT/SING….WESTHOLLYWOOD
I agree. Dujardin has the ‘x’ quality that should make him an international star. I hope we see much more of him in the States.
Thanks for posting–that was utterly charming. I always mean to dvr SNL & always forget. Done & done!
That’s a fairly talented bunch yet he’s Miles above them!
I see some Americans don’t like to lose to French. I agree that The Artist is a bit overrated, but it’s still charming and an homage to old Hollywood movies, and very influenced by Singing in the Rain and A Star is Born, and Dujardin reminds me a lot of Gene Kelly in it.
Dujardin starred in a funny TV series before being a movie actor, and he is very funny and doesn’t take himself too seriously, a bit like Clooney.
He his charming. but I saw The Artist.. and it was not the best movie of the year. I just didn’t get the hype. Reminds me of Slumdog Millionaire. A feel good movie that did not deserve the Oscar for Best Film.. and I am afraid the Academy is going to do the same thing this year. Nobody talks about SDM anymore. I don’t see it listed on many top movie list. and to me that just shows how they get it wrong so often.
Another reason not to watch the show.
That clip was fun! Not bad French, decent dancing, and upbeat choreography.
Too much poorly-done canned laughter on SNL.
Canned? They always have a hot mix on the audience mikes.
I don’t understand why people still watch SNL. It’s never fun. 8th grader humor at best.
Dragon Tattoo was embarrassing for everyone involved — just wasnt good.
I beg to differ, it was a great movie — and I guess you are in the minority here — with the DGA giving fincher a nod and rooney mara getting a best actress nod — if that’s embarrasing, I will take that.
Fincher is the new Spielberg- people ride him regardless of the quality of the film. Dragon Tattoo was okay, but forgettable.
I agree. It seemed forced and indulgent.
I agree. Too much violence just for the sake of violence. Silence of the Lambs set in Sweden. There was great acting in it; Craig, Plummer, Skaresgarrd, etc. But they should have reduced the sex and violence.
Glad someone else sees the gimmick in the overrated The Artist.
Gimmick? What is the gimmick? That it’s silent? I wonder if you would have considered the first talkie movie a gimmick.
The Artist will win and should. I hope he wins as well. Sorry George, it is not meant to be. Aussi, Brad. Bon soir, Il Principe.
He’s dedicated and can dance but thats a lot of time in the air to remind us that the movie could have been a skit. At least he got the miles.
‘The Artist’ was amusing, light-hearted, and fun, but it wasn’t the best picture of the year.
What annoys me is that it wasn’t even the most amusing, light-hearted, and fun movie of the year. That honor goes to ‘Midnight in Paris’ which is undeservingly being overlooked in Oscar discussions.
You guys. Please. Jean Dujardin brought Hollywood’s Golden Age back to us. Instead of fighting if he should win the Oscar (which HE MUST) or not, we should be FOREVER thankful, ’cause no other actor could’ve done what he did. Hands down, The Artist: Best Picture and Jean Dujardin: Best Actor.
Lyanne, I agree with you. I live in L.A. and hang around with lots of movie and TV people, mostly technicians and writers. Dujardin is terrific. Great talent, funny, very personable. We hope to see more of him in the States.
P.S. He is going to win the Oscar. Everyone I know in the business says the same thing.
It is a joke that he is the best actor – a dancer who mugs for the camera. My vote is the emotional nuance of Clooney in the Descendants.
First of all he’s not a dancer. He learned to dance for the movie. He’s an actor, one of France’s biggest. As to ‘mugging’ the camera. That was the style of silent movies, and even into early talkies. You don’t seem to know much about what you’re talking about.
That skit was fun, just like movie itself. But, The Artist is yet another enjoyable, but forgettable films that will win Best Picture. I left the theater smiling, but I did the same for Bridesmaids…that doesn’t mean either should win BP. If The Artist had sound and was in color but had the exact same plot, nobody would be raving about it. But considering the Academy has awarded movies like Crash, Slumdog Millionaire and The King’s Speech in recent years, this is par for the course.
Are you serious?!? The Artist has classic quality! I bet in 50 years time, people are still going to be talking about it. The Artist has scenes that already feel iconic, and that’s certainly not something you can say about a lot of films, not just films nominated this year.
I thought that SNL sketch sucked major balls though. Somebody either fire everybody associated with that terrible show or cancel the whole darn train wreck. This has been going on for too long, it’s time to do something.
TAKE ACTION, CANCEL SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE. Or at least get new writers.
dujardin didn’t just mug through the film. If you didn’t feel the chemistry between those two, his despair, and his hurt at seeing it all fall away, you must have been in another world. He perfectly captures the heart of silent film: it’s all emotion. He subtly but perfectly radiates the emotional tenor and tone through his eyes.
Mary, Very well said. I agree with you. But the BEST part when he wins the Oscar is that we won’t be subjected to some stupid anti-American speech by some spoiled American movie star.
FYI SNL is well known in France and there has even been two attempts to do a French version of SNL. And one of the comedians of the first French SNL, on Canal Plus, was the brother of the Director of The Artist…
I cant imagine anyone else playing The Artist except Jean. A bunch of actors could have played Clooney’s role. It is a great movie and deserves all of the praise it gets.
Let’s cut right to the chase: I live in Los Angeles. I hang around a lot of show biz people in the studios and TV. There is absolutely no truth at all that Americans ( least of all the Academy or Golden Globes or SAG) are biased against foreign actors and directors. ON THE CONTRARY we love it when they win awards. Why?? Simply because it strokes our ego that our awards programs are international in scope and the most sought after. Get it?? Did you see the reactions when Christoph Waltz, Marianne Cottilard, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Helen Miriam won the Oscars? Did the Americans in the audience seem upset to you?? How about when these same people appear on American talk shows. They’re idolized !!
