Dimension Films has tapped Disney writers program alum Matt Lieberman to script its family film Short Circuit. Tim Hill (Alvin And The Chipmunks), already attached to direct, will work closely with Lieberman in re-imagining the 1980s John Badham film about a lab robot that is electrocuted and becomes intelligent. Details of the new version are being kept secret. David Foster, who produced the original, is producing with Ryan E. Heppe, John Hyde and Brian Manis. A Summer 2013 release is planned with shooting scheduled for the end of this year. The deal was negotiated for Dimension Films by Adrian Lopez, VP of Business and Legal and Matthew Signer, SVP of Production and Creative Affairs, and for the filmmakers by Brad Rosenfeld at Preferred Artists and Melissa Rogal at Lichter, Grossman, Nichols, Adler & Feldman. Lieberman is represented by Rosenfeld, Rogal and Adam Kolbrenner at Madhouse.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Number 5 is alive!
The original was funny.
How exciting! One of the Worst Movies of All-Time getting remade. Gee, I never thought Hollywood would get around to this one. Thank God someone unearthed this awful little treasure.
Well, I suppose they can’t do worse by it.
Can’t wait to miss it.
I’m beginning to find it tiresome every time studios and production companies keep saying “details are being kept secret” or “logline is under wraps”….in a lame attempt to drum up anticipation or interest as if it’s the shooting script to The Dark Knight Rises.
Christopher Nolan’s scripts are kept secret. JJ Abrams loglines are under wraps.
This is a Short Circuit remake. We know the details already.
Good for Matt! He’s an amazing writer and an even better human being. Gonna knock it out of the park.
The secret is that Johnny Five is being played by Wall-E, since Pixar basically ripped off that character.
If Fisher Stevens isn’t in it, they’re not getting my family’s money.
Seriously ? – come on Hollywood . Make movies people want to see. This crap is over and done
Ha ha. Your comment is funny.
Matt’s a great choice. Big fan of PAUL IS DEAD.
What happened to the Milano draft? Obviously it didn’t get made but what’s the scoop??
I can’t wait to NOT go see this crap. Will it ever end?
Has Hollywood completely run ot of movie ideas now? Reneweing this franchise? Good gravy!
Really should be a reboot instead of a “re-imagining”. They should use the same robot character but put him in a new situation. Nothing has sucked more than when studios try to “re-imagine” classic movie and TV shows.
It was only a matter of time before someone snatched Matt Lieberman up for a high profile project such as this. He is an idea machine and knocks it out of the park one page at a time. I’m looking forward to this.
Whatever. Add this to the list of Dimension remakes and sequels that will NEVER happen. Stop wasting everyone’s time, Bob. It’s not 1997 anymore.
Doesn’t Sony have the rights to this?
No reassemble! No reassemble!
Dimension needs to get its balls back.
NEED INPUT!

We are now in an eternal loop of utter crap being ‘reimagined’
We are experiencing a cinema healing crisis. Once the walled-off morons in production clue in to the fact NOBODY will pay to watch this junk, new, non-sequel, well-acted, inexpensive movies about interesting, modern subjects will save EVERYTHING.
I still recall the horrible Human League new wave ‘Electric Dreams’ theme song. This movie was crap THEN!
Having one of my favorite movies from childhood re-imagined does not really thrill me. If they were opting for a continuation of the story that would be a different story altogether. Number 5 as he was known in number 1 was great and in a lot of respects Johnny 5 from the 2nd as he has now named himself is even better. Part of the joy of the short circuit movies is within the movies they address the characters as they are a part of there era which is the 80′s. Number 5 is rather a extreme piece of hardware that the thought of it gaining intelligence from a freak accident is spectacular.
If you re-imagined it with a modern twist modern robotics and computer AI’s have nearly destroyed the potential for the fantasy. Instead we have super computers who have competed on Jeopardy and won. We have modern robotics from japan that has the imitation of human form and interactions with others in the real world being nearly human in behavior. The leap in fantasy just isn’t there.
I would love to see my Johnny 5 of the 80′s reaction to today’s modern technology. Would he want upgrades? Would he want to help with the advancement of these technologies. Would he discover that to help they would have to “Disassemble” him? This is just a humble fans perspective.
Way to go Adrian Lopez! Attorney par excellence
The remake should still take place in the 80s. I am having trouble seeing how this story could be adapted to modern times.
