Matt Long, who played the lead in ABC’s short-lived legal drama The Deep End, is back at the network as the young male lead of period drama pilot Gilded Lilys. Also cast in the project, written/exec produced by KJ Steinberg and executive produced by Shonda Rhimes, are Army Wives co-star Brigid Brannagh and Maury Sterling (Homeland). Set in 1895, Gilded Lilys centers on the Lilys who are looking to revive their family’s fortunes by opening the most lavish hotel in New York history
while their beautiful daughter Violet (Sarah Bolger), engaged to be married to a wealthy family friend, falls madly in love with charismatic lowly ship’s servant John Kidd (Long). Brannagh will play Violet’s mother Elizabeth who is married to Edwin Lily (Brían F. O’Byrne). Sterling will play the sharp-tongued valet of Edwin’s playboy brother. Long’s series credits also include an arc on Mad Men. Because of Lifetime’s recent order of 10 additional episodes of Army Wives, the series’ production schedule made it difficult for its co-stars to do pilots. Helping Brannagh’s case is the fact that Gilded Lily and Army Wives are produced by the same studio, ABC Studios, as well as an upcoming plot twist on the Lifetime series.
Erinn Hayes (Worst Week) has landed a co-starring role in another ABC pilot, the untitled Mandy Moore single-camera comedy directed by Shawn Levy. The project, written by Bob Fisher and Stacy Traub, centers on newlyweds Annie (Moore) and Ben who get the opportunity of a lifetime to run a hip, new restaurant in Annie’s hometown bringing her closer to her needy and high maintenance family. Hayes, repped by Innovative Artists and Sweeney Entertainment, will play Annie’s beautiful lesbian sister. Her recent series credits include Adult Swim’s Childrens Hospital and a recurring role on NBC’s Parenthood.

Spoiler Alert?

So it’s a remake of TITANIC?
As if a romance between two different classes was invented by Titanic…
Maury, Brigid and Erinn Innovative Artists clients!
I’d say this show is more inspired by Downton Abbey‘s success. But it remains to be seen whether the 5-6M that PBS gets (and can afford since unlike ABC they don’t have to foot the bill for the production) will be greatly improved upon on broadcast.
The networks are attempting to ape niche outlets like cable and PBS, but without their financial models that allow an audience well south of 10M to be a big hit. Didn’t work for Pan Am or The Playboy Club, not working for Smash – and since those shows run the gamit in terms of quality, you can’t chalk it up to audiences rejecting crap. There’s another factor at play here, the inherent limitation of the audience for any nichey show. Maybe 10M is just more than anyone can expect.
Maury Sterling is one of the most underrated actors that i know. Seriously, this guy is awesome. I saw him in All My Sons last year and I was blown away by him. He has also been doing a great job recurring on HOMELAND This couldn’t have happened to a better guy.
Sounds like ABC is jumping on the Downton Abbey historical soap opera bandwagon, trying to capitalize on the surprising American response to historical drama. Which could be good. I’m a DA fan. We’ll just see if ABC can rise to it’s quality.
So looking forward to Guilded Lillies about USA familes and dress of that era. Everything previous from that era seems to be set in England with accents. It will be refreshing to see a USA setting
I really do not care if you are bored with this comment. Get over it. It really isn’t just all about you.
